I saw him in a pre-season game playing for the Argonauts- at least I think that was him. He's cut his hair and dropped about 30 pounds (er, sorry. I don't know the metric equivalent)and is very hard to spot compared to his daze with Miami. Not knowing a whole lot about Canadian football, I have read that big RBs are kind of scarce. Also, are the CFL weed rules different than the NFL? |

Onterio Smith didn't make the cut and Williams was only so so, but promising. They're selling lots of tickets in Toronto to see Williams as Toronto pangs for an NFL team.
The Argos play today (July 17th) at 3:00pm EST against what should be a very good Hamilton Tiger-Cat team. They picked up Jason Maas from Edmonton and Terry Vaughn.
It's on radio It's on CBC in Canada and live in the US on Comcast Sports Mid Atlantic Balt/Wash, CSS Atlanta and delayed on Comcast SNY New York and Comcast Seattle.
It says on the CFL site: "Former Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams will make his regular-season debut with the Argonauts. Williams has rushed for 7,097 yards in six seasons in the NFL, but was limited to 53 yards in two pre-season games."
The best player on the Argonauts is Marcus Allen's brother Damon. At 45 he was the most outstanding player last year and won the Grey Cup the year before. Someday the wheels are going to fall off the wagon, but not yet. They also have stolen a brilliant kick returner and RB, Keith Stokes.
The headline for my team, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers should have read "Whizzinator can't help Onterio Smith pass this test." He came to camp 30 lbs overweight and was injured the first day. He finally played in the second pre-season game and fumbled the ball.
Even then, he came cheap and there should have been room to see if he would develop but we already have two very good backs and a surprising third back showed up in camp Henri Childs, son of New Orleans Saint Henry Childs. Hurray for us.
Nobody knows the metric system. They switched when I was about 9. I measure small things in inches, drive in Kilometres, weight in pounds (even the CFL website shows the player's weights in pounds.
NFL success doesn't equal CFL success. The field is 50 yards wide and speed and versatility are crucial. Lots of offensive and defensive starters line-up for special teams.
Some notable CFL alumni. Warren Moon, played his best years with the Edmonton Eskimos. Doug Flutie, continuously screwed over by the NFL for years, in Toronto. Sean Salisbury, I remember him as second stringer but he did win the Grey Cup for the Bombers in 1988. ...wait there's more...

It's a league of extreme nepotism. I can recall two times when the Manager's son-in-law was the third string quarterback.
It was very humorous last year when Damon won the Grey Cup, Marcus Allen walked out on the field to congratulate him and all the media converged on Marcus for his opinion of the day's events. Damon could have slipped into the crowd and disappeared, no one would have noticed.

Hamilton held Williams to 6 carries and 22 yards in the three quarters, but he was in fine form and ended with 18 carries and 97 yards with one for 35. 2 catches for 24 yards.
27-17 for Toronto was the final. Damon Allen was injured early in the first quarter (broken right-middle-finger) and replaced by Spergon Wynn who did nothing for the Bombers last year but looked excellent in this game.

Game 2 for Ricky Williams is the regular season home opener for my beloved Blue Bombers here in Winnipeg.
We played to a disappointing loss against the Montreal Alouettes last week. We had them down 17-7 in the third but after a couple of interceptions and a missed field goal, the kind of breaks you can't give to a powerhouse team, the game ended 27-17.
We gathered 18 penalties for 171 yards (6 by OL Mike Abou-Mechrek) but allowed only 278 yards of offensive and made Anthony Calvillo look almost human.
The Friday June 23rd game is at 8:00pm EST on TSN and in the US on Dish Network/World Sport.
You can also hear one the great play-by-play men in football, CJOB's Bob Irving, call the game.
This would be the clash of the two premier running backs in the league, Williams and #32 (#1 in our hearts) Charles Roberts (generously listed at 5'6" 171 lbs), but the Bombers don't give up many yards on the ground and the new Big Blue offence is not geared towards the run.
Coming back to Winnipeg are Toronto's outstanding punt returner Keith Stokes and quarter-back Spergon Wynn, starting for an injured Damon Allen. Wynn didn't receive his due last year in Winnipeg as the team collapsed under Coach Jim Daly and I was stunned at his performance last week against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Where the hell were you when WE needed you? Winnipeg's starting QB Kevin Glenn is still the biggest question mark for the fans and had a statistically disastrous game last week.
The game against Williams will be intriguing with star tackle (6'8") Doug Brown, ends Tom Canada and Gavin Walls and star LB Barrin Simpson making a formidable defensive barrier but the outcome will likely depend on the Bomber DBs continuing the level of play shown against Montreal.
The Bomber offence has a glut of great receivers (Milt "Uncle Milty" Stegall, sure-handed Jamie Stoddard, Brazzell, Thurman, Franklin...) if Glenn can make some plays.
Toronto returners Bashir Levingston and Stokes are about as good as they come while Winnipeg, missing Albert Johnson III to injury, may see Roberts accumulate big all-purpose yards. |

Despite horrid special teams play Winnipeg won the game 16-9.
Charles Roberts had 32 touches for 133 yards.
The Bomber defensive gave what the locker-room called a "silly" effort allowing only 72 yards total with 6 sacks. Williams longest run was for 11 and his total was 8 runs for 14 yards.
Ricky will be glad not to see them again until August 25th. |

Did you notice I've been giddily verbose?
I guess no one else is interested in talking CFL, so this is my last post on the subject.
Did you see it? Huh? I'm told it was the ESPN highlight of the week. My beloved Bombers were up 19-14 with less than a minute on the clock, 3rd and inches on our own 31 yard line. It's a quarterback sneak, and we fumble! The Edmonton Eskimos get a touchdown and a 2 point conversion with eight seconds left on the clock. We take the kick and get a penalty, stuck on our own 10 yard line, game over. One Hail Mary falls incomplete, 4 seconds, but hey, what is that defense doing? They're playing man-to-man? Second Hail Mary...'Uncle Milty' Stegall has the ball, the two defenders collide like the Keystone Cops...100 yard last second touchdown to win!! Oh my god. It's Milt's 133 career touchdown as he chases the CFL record of 137, and the recently hapless Bombers are 4-2.
As for the topic's topic, they snuck a Bomber-Argo game in Toronto I didn't see on the schedule and once again Williams was smothered, 6 yards on 9 attempts. And this last week Ricky fractured his left forearm. His season totals are 231 yards on 57 carries after 5 games, or 208 on 40 in 3 games when not facing Winnipeg. |

wow, that's pretty depressing output for Williams. Man, to have that much talent but not want/be able to harness it is amazing to us on the outside of professional sports. Least he gets to enjoy his weed now I guess.
I've never seen any CFL ball...just the periodic highlights down here.
Big Cowboys fan and looking forward to training camp and the whole T.O. circus.

Dude, I'm reading your great posts! I just don't know enough about the CFL to respond too much. I heard that he broke his arm. Looks like he will get to spend the off season coming up with a new plan, an effective plan. I look for him to drop even more weight. |
