Hey Simon,
Have you heard anything about Alan Sparhawk's Solo Guitar record? It looks intriguing...

I was trying to blag a free copy of it a while ago, but haven't heard anything... I might have a go, it sounds like it should be pretty good.

Further news about the album recently known as The Violet Path
The forthcoming Low record will be entitled Drums and Guns, not The Violet Path, contrary to what we previously posted here.
Sorry for the misinformation.
Drums and Guns will be out on Sub Pop Records March 20, 2007."

"Hello everyone.
I'd like to make at least a brief report of the trip to Kenya, and some other stuff going on. My visit to Namuncha, Kenya in August was one of the most impressive experiences of my life so far. I am still learning from my short time there and hope to go again in the near future. I saw the school building that the Christmas shows last year helped build. The stone walls are up and the roof is next to go up. The goal is to have it all done by the end of the year. I saw beautiful things and met beautiful, inspiring people -- I still shake my head in amazement. There are pictures up on the Laleyio site. The school is going to take a couple thousand dollars to finish, but we're hoping to raise some of that at the Low Christmas shows this December in NYC and Chicago.
We have recently finished a new full-length recording that will likely be released in March on Sub Pop Records. We tracked and mixed it with producer Dave Fridmann. It's called Drums and Guns.
Retribution Gospel Choir just finished a short tour of the Western US. The tour EP (our second) will be available shortly on the merch page, along with the new Low T-shirt that has an octopus on it.
Chairkickers' Music has a few new records out this Fall/Winter. The second No Wait Wait record is out now, and The State Champs debut CD will finally be released in January. These are both great bands I hope you can get a moment to check out. Meanwhile, there are new releases out there by other Chairkickers' friends, including the Winter Blanket, Rivulets, Paul Metzger, the Keepaways, and Haley Bonar. Also watch for a free download release coming soon by Iamtheslowdancingumbrella, a group I've been listening to a lot for the past few years.
Zak Sally¹s publishing company, La Mano, has put out a book by Nathaniel Drake Denver called "Wait, You¹re Not a Centaur" which has become an immediate favorite at the house. It's all 50-word short stories, with illustrations. It's very funny and true.
Lastly, on behalf of the whole Low family, I'd like to publicly express our deep sadness at the recent passing of our friend Randy Kaye. This has shaken us all, and we will miss him. Our best wishes go to his family, and to the many others who have felt this loss.
Kick it. =alan"

Sandanista is great, but Dragonfly I just love so much. I'm looking forward to hearing what they do with them on the album.

what do you think of it cassandra?
It took me a few listens, but I really love it now, despite the weird vocal mix. It's a very dry album, especially if you compare it to the lushness of Trust. I think however they mixed/produced Dragonfly it would still be a lovely song, adn I can't stop singing Hatchet.

ha, I debated with myself for....ooh....seconds. If it had been only a month then I might have waited, but three months, ach. It'll be interesting to see if these are the final mixes - I don't see why they shouldn't be. I have wondered why it leaked so early though, rough mixes or not. Maybe Low themselves were a bit nervous about it and thought they'd get some fan feedback, although I don't think that's in keeping with Sparhawk's mentality.
Have you heard the live boots of some of the new songs?

The Great Destroyer was my favourite album of last year. I think the songs were really strong and Fridmann did just fine. I'm not sure staying with Steve Albini forever would do Low any favours.

I love it benji. It's maybe a bit of a surprise at first, but it's definitely a grower. I'll be buying it when it's released, certainly.

Thanks cassandra, the video is really good.
It doesn't look like the album is released here for another couple of weeks.

There's space between the Belfast and Swiss gigs in May for a few more dates, so hopefully you'll be in luck.

I admittedly haven't listened too much yet, but it sounds a bit... odd. My first impressions are too much Fridmann, not enough Low.

It is a bit odd at first. The mixing is weird, with almost all the vocals on the right side (especially strange on headphones). The drum loops and and odd beats take a bit of getting used to too, but like many great records, it is a grower.
After Sandanista, the songs are a bit more 'Low' but in some ways I think they struggle a bit against the earlier tracks. Not to say they aren't great, just more what we'd expect.
It's definitely worth your time guys.

Saw Low last night in Glasgow. Fantastic. Much louder than I expected it to be - I loved Alan Sparhawk's guitar. Sometimes he looks like he's about to leap out of his own skin. Mostly it was the new album with a few others thrown in. Two-Step, Pissing (my highlight), Sunflower. Drums & Guns comes across so well live.
The gig was however also notable for a fight breaking out I mean, at a Low gig! Sheesh! Sparhawk said it was the first time they'd had that at one of their gigs. Well done Glasgow for re-affirming the stereotype.

I've readjusted my opinion on the record, btw, after more listening. It is different, but in a good way.
