It's one of my favoritest on FMRM. Does anyone else absolutely love this song like me? The chorus instantly reminded me of Dylan's "If Not For You" -maybe because I know Dylan is an influence on Mr. Black, or possibly because the lyrics have more than one similarity between them (then again, how many times have you and blue and true been rhymed). The ending of this song is one of the best on the album with that sweet roll of the drums to cap things off. I get the feeling of an apocalypse versus dawn of time/origin of species in the words.
And that line: "Now you're the smoke and I'm the lung" rocks.

Hi, josephmichael. Yeah, actually, I noticed a similarity with that too! New Morning is a really overlooked Dylan album...the title track, Day Of The Locusts and especially Father Of Night are standouts.

Frank definitely goes for a classic songwriting style on some of FMRM's tracks, and pulls it off wonderfully; not just with the instruments, but vocally, too.

It reminds me of "Goodbye to You" from 1982 by Scandal.

Yes Bill! (Back to the 'sounds like' thread) That was the first thing I thought when I heard it, "It reminds me of...you".

It's funny how this song reminds everybody of other songs. I hear Under My Thumb every time he sings the title lyric.

Don't Cry That Way also reminds me of something, maybe by Dylan or Cat Stevens.

Right on, Carl. Don't Cry That Way is very Dylan, both musically and lyrically.
