You know how that theory says something about crazy storms erupting in Timbuktu 'cause a butterfly in Victorville flaps its wings?

Sometimes I wonder what would be going on in the world had Fight Club not been made, or been directed by someone else, or had its music chosen by someone else, or whatever.

Frankly, I think no Fight Club = No Pixies reuiniting. From there, who knows where else we might go. I could be getting the chronology wrong, but for Frank, maybe no Portland, no family, no Jon Tiven album(s) (yet?), more Catholics albums, hundreds/thousands fewer people on these forums . . .

Maybe go backward from Fight Club to* the casting of Bonham-Carter in the Zefferelli (whatshisname? the one with Mel Gibson) Hamlet. Perhaps it was integral to the Pixies ultimate reunion. Thence we might credit Mad Max for getting Mel over here to provide the impetous for the film being made.

Perhaps Mel regrets never seeing Halley's comet, having chosen to follow his muse from OZ to Hollywood.

Anything else?

*Or follow Meatloaf wherever the hell we want . . . Rocky Horror?" or Brad Pitt to Thelma & Louise . . . maybe Susan Sarandon is the missing link! Maybe Geena Davis-->FLETCH-->George Wendt-->HOUSE-->William Katt-->G. A. Hero . . . Pixies reunion?

I just want to say here and now, in Thrasher Magazine, that I did not kill Mr. Stitcha.

Well if it weren't for seeing Fight Club I certainly wouldn't have heard of Frank Black/Pixies as many others probably wouldn't have.
It's interesting when you think and trace it back like that.

I don't really think there would've been much effect if the movie hadn't been made. On a small scale, sure, some got into a band they loved. On a larger scale, the Pixies gained some popularity and perhaps the momentum needed to reconvene (I hadn't considered this as a cause, but it may be part of it). I mean, people were asking for a Pixies reunion long before Fight Club, but maybe increasing record sales and/or interest was noticed by the man. I just think he was coming to a contemplative point in his life, coupled with being in a jokey mood during a certain interview and subsequent releases on fb.net, and bam. Reunion. But maybe CNN wouldn't have picked it up if they hadn't gotten a fresh batch of fans?

Anyway, it is interesting to think along those lines, though inconclusive as most things of interest tend to be...

Interesting speculation Ed. It's often easy to point to something in our own lives, like a college dorm roommate assignment, but not so simple to see how a soundtrack impacts millions. I can see no Fight Club meaning many of the specifics of Frank’s life being different, especially at the level of wife and city of residence. But given his roots, it’s not too hard to think that he likely would still have taken a turn toward the roots Americana. I guess in retrospect every trail seems as unlikely as all the others. Last night I was watching one of those ubiquitous documentaries on the legend of Atlantis, this one quite credibly arguing that the Aegean island of Santorini was Atlantis, before it blew its top on a scale many times that of Krakatoa, completely destroying itself and also ending the Minoan civilization on nearby Crete. Anyway, they concluded with how that likely led to the rise of ancient Greece, with all that means for how we in the West live today.

You can probably thank Nirvana before that too, but again, as Dean says, it's inconclusive.
