Any mandolin players here? I recently bought a cheap-ish one on a whim and need any advice people can give me. What do I need to concentrate on most when practising: my tremelo picking or my scales, ie getting used to the different intervals etc. I have a vague knowledge as I play guitar and used to play violin, but any advice you can give me would be ace.

i've been playing mandolin since i was about 9. the thing you want to concentrate on at first is your finger placement. worry about picking later (it will come). also, ideally you want a mandolin with a spruce top and scale length of at least 629mm.
actually, i've never played mandolin. was just trying to be helpful

No dive bombs with the whammy bar but finger tapping is okay. Let us know when you can do the solo in "Stonehenge".

I played mandolin in a concert for the first time last night. Iīm pretty much a dilettante when it comes to music, I just jump in and feel my way around. The only pieces of advice I can give are 1) shut up and play 2) listen to as much music with mandolin on it you can find. My favourite is Khala Zo'Me by Royal Players I found on this township music anthology http://www.wrasserecords.com/albums/48.html, if you canīt download it I can pass an mp3 on to you.

I can picture you serenading a certain someone with "You are the Everything". Man, it gives me the chills!
hehe... seriously now, I love mandolin and plan to buy one some day. There are some cheap ones for sale out there.

Denis, if I was the sort of man to use lots of sliced cucumber, then I would have one already. As it is, I don't.

Aspiring mandolin players beware:
These instruments are small and handy to play while relaxing on a couch or chair. Just remember where you leave the damn thing because they're easy to sit on. Same with the uke. I wonder if Frank has ever sat on one of his ukes? |

Electric Mandolin with heavy delay is very cool. I heard a song on the radio that rips off the solo from Dance After Curfew, except on guitar, I have no idea what song that was.

I've been playing mandolin for about two years now. I pretty much just took the knowledge I had of guitar & made the rest up. And yes, I really have sat on my mandolin before after I left it on the couch.
I found some good info here... www.mandolincafe.com They have chords, scales, lessons & other general info.
If I were you, I'd focus on some chords first, then progress to the scales. The rhythm of a mandolin has a much more percussive/choppy feel. The open chords (G, C, D) are super easy to play and will get you off your feet. The barre chords are a bit tougher but with a little work, you'll get them down.
I found the scales were actually easier to memorize than on guitar because everything is symmetrical over the four strings (well, eight strings but you know what I mean). It's missing that silly B string from the guitar that throws everything off. And I'm not concerned with the speed that a lot of nuclear fast mandolinists can attain. I prefer for adding small fills or melodic solos rather than going all Eddie Van Halen on it.

Thanks Oil Boy, one of few serious respondees. I must attract the nutters. You're right, those chords do seem to be the only ones I can remember at the moment, and I think you're right about the scales as well.
Still, I kind of want to be the EVH of mandolin... If this happens, I'll drop back here to recruit my Diamond Dave.
