Contacted the guys at the Urban Lounge, who claim they have no problem with me recording the performance. Am excited about that. Will be happy to offer it here in a lossless format (unless it is completely crap).
Ordered my tickets hoy dia. Anyone else plan to be there? Frank?
By the way, I am super paranoid--and sometimes almost certain--that the show will be cancelled. But see, by typing this, I create a conundrum for the hands of fate. Ha-ha! Stupid hands with non-opposable thumbs. Ah-ha-ha!

Watch this space. I'll post my experience here as soon as I can. I do plan to record the show and make it available in the files section as soon as possible. Wish me luck getting a good recording.

Hi all! I am new to the forum. I am stoked that you are taping! I will make sure I clap very quietly in case I am standing near you.
I am going to be at the show tonight in Salt Lake. I am driving all the way up from St. George to see the show.
I just moved here from Southern CA where I have seen Frank numerous times in LA.
How is the Urban Lounge? Will it be packed? Is there an opening band? What time does Frank come on? I have to leave work early today and drive 5 hours.
I am bringing two people that have never even heard of Frank Black or the Pixies. They are in for a treat! Hope to see you there tonight.

Thanks.
Fast man: I believe it'll be around 9, and I doubt there's an opener. Never been to this club, but can assume it's small. I don't remember if they still do this but, since--thanks to local law--all liquor dispensing establishments must be membership-only private clubs, you used to need to buy a one-night membership for a buck or two at the door.
You might recognize me as a stout dark haired bearded guy with a lovely blonde woman by his side. I might be wearing one of those baseball cap things. Also, I hope to be toward the middle and front of the venue; I am under the impression that people will actually be seated during the performance. That sure would be nice for the recording anyway.
To try and recognize you, I'll watch for an exhausted-looking person of undetermined sex, flanked by two awestruck exhausted-looking persons of undetermined sex . . . clapping very quietly. :D

Glad to see you'll be recording the show! I'll be there w/my camera and hopefully get some decent shots. There is a restaurant right next door to the venue and they're unable to start any shows until after 10pm. I was there last week for the Jason Lytle show and the crowd was horrible -- great show, though. I hope people turn out for this one!

Show didn't even start until well after 11 pm. I'm checking back through it. Unfortunately, the crowd really f***ed it up for Frank, I believe. Will report in a few; patience!

Aight, el set listo:
01. Czar 02. Horrible Day 03. Nimrod's Son 04. Two Reelers 05. Sir Rockabye 06. Cactus 07. Los Angeles 08. Mr. Grieves 09. I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh) 10. California Bound 11. Sister Isabel 12. Abstract Plain 13. Dead Man's Curve? 14. I Burn Today 15. Song Of The Shrimp 16. All My Ghosts 17. Water (Song?) 18. Bullet WIMM FALSE START (Nah, Fuck that) 19. Headache WIMM FALSE START 20. Sing For Joy 21. Raider Man 22. Humboldt County Massacre 23. Manitoba 24. Superabound 25. Brackish Boy ENCORE 26. Western Star ENCORE 27. 666 (a capella) (~85 minute performance)
For such a varied and exciting set, it sure was disappointing. Mostly it was the crowd. They treated Mr. Black like a lounge act; I'd say 1/3 of the crowd was talking the whole fricking time. He didn't openly act annoyed but I can't imagine how he could have been happy with it.
My favorite points during the show were two occasions in which he started Where Is My Mind as teases that seemed at least somewhat malicious. The first time he started it off and said, "Nah, fuck that." At least one over-zealous audience member actually flipped him the bird when he quit Where Is My Mind. Then he played Headache. The second WIMM false start was so cool. He had a facetious mock-sexually-aroused countenance while strumming the first few chords. I think he even rolled his eyes. It was great. I was so happy for him.
Some wonderful surprises in the set, including All My Ghosts, Two Reelers(!) and Western Star. It was noteworthy that the first of only two FM RM cuts he performed was the first to be voted off in FM RM Survivor. How much more poetic could he get?
At first I thought he might've been kind of wasted, since he tried to start IND(IIP) a few times and never got it quite right. He messed up quite a bit--like he hadn't really rehearsed. He also did some nice cover-up ad libs.
Miles did the sound up behind us, and was accompanied by (I believe) the lovely Miss Violet. He's bald now too. She had this cute bob do and some glasses. I was so tempted to just ask to join them at the booth so I could enjoy the performance and get a better recording. Ah well.
The back stage passes appeared to sport a shot of one of Violet's boys with headphones on. Poor Frank was harrassed by a pair of annoying wenches, both of whom attempted to join him on stage during different stages of his performance.
After the Western Star encore, he put his guitar away--I'm pretty sure he was "done", but he ultimately treated us to an a capella version of half of 666 (333?) before bailing on the lyrics.
Overall, it was a nice experience. Everyone should get to see the Man solo at least once. The crowd/venue type stuff made it much worse than it should've been.
On a positive note, I think those of you attending the 4-piece band shows are in for a treat and a half. Frank's voice is better than it was when I last saw him with the Catholics (or even with the Pixies), and he's still Frank; you know, the genius.
More to come on this night, maybe.
The recording: SHIT. My mics were clearly having SPL issues. It wasn't distortion from clipping or whatever--it was like they were overwhelmed half the time. Worse still, the crowd was SO loud. For instance, during a really unique rendition of Cactus (done mostly falsetto, slowly and quietly), it was almost ALL crowd. The bastards.
I'll still see what I can do with it, and will offer it here soon. Thanks for listening.
versionke: Where were you/what did you look like/was it an SLR-type camera? I was watching for people going grazy with the photos. One guy on the right of the stage with kind of a mohawkish hairdo had his eye behind what looked like a digital SLR for much of the show. I'd love to see some shots from one of these sources.
Fast Man: Nice to meet you tonight. I should've tried the front front like you and your pals did. People up there appeared to actually be there for the music.

Thanks for the update, ed, i'm glad you (and the others from here) got a setlist you deserved. I'm intrigued by the 'water' song and in awe of Two Reelers. I need to go re-read your post, let it all sink in. |

Dead Man's Curve is cool. I wondered for a bit whether that was one of the prospective Pixies songs. All the same, it's unmistakably Frank. |

ed: thank you for grabbing the setlist! that person w/the mohawkish hair was me, and yes it was a DSLR. i was up a bit late looking at all of the photos, and some of them turned out very nice. i'll be sure to post links to them tonight once i upload them to my site.
the crowd is nearly always a disappointment in SLC. luckily i didn't notice the all the talkers as much (thank god). up front the sound may not be as good but you don't have to deal with all the asshats in the crowd -- worth the tradeoff for me. (+ it's the only place for decent photos). |

Teasing WIMM reminds me of when Nirvana used to tease Smells Like Teen Spirit. Now Frank is stealing from Kurt. Sunrise, sunset. This can only mean one thing: new Pixies album. And it will sound like In Utero.

Hey ed...it was nice meeting you. I was right directly in front and I can give the same review as you. An off night all around. The crowd was very annoying. I could not believe how loud they were talking throughout even the quietest of moments. I mean how can any person talk through that version of Cactus is beyond me. I think the sound system in that place is jacked up also. The worse dive bars in LA have a better sounding system.
I was very surprised that he did not play more FM/RM songs. The people I brought with me wanted to hear the songs from the new album I played for them on the way to the show.
For me, the 5 hour drive was worth it to see him play an interesting and unexpected set list. I dont think that the two guys with me converted to the Cult Of Frank though.
Two side notes: 1. The guy that opened was really bad... Maybe it was the sound system though. 2. I am surprised at the amount of smoke that bar had in it. I could barely breath. I think Frank was having some trouble with it too. An air conditioner that worked might have helped.
Thanks for taping. I am really tired still from the drive so I cant think well right now. I still need to work a full day too.....yawn.
Have a great week everyone.

I can't believe he played Superabound!?!
That's not one he usually plays even with the C's is it? Hopefully I'll hear the acoustic version in Indy for myself on Sun! |

Last time i saw FB acoustic, there was a kid (who used to post on here, forget his name) screaming the lyrics and drumming on his legs for songs like "The Swimmer" which don't really lend themselves to acoustic singalongs. That was annoying as shit...if someone does that at the shows next week in NY, heads will roll...

i don't understand people who go to shows and talk the whole time. it's one thing if it's loud, and you're not disturbing other people..
but there are a few solo bootlegs i have where there are these people talking throughout the entire show and i want to reach my hands through the speakers and strangle them

The setlist doesn't surprise me. After the SF shows and the interview in the podcast, I got the feeling he was going to play songs from all over his post-pixies career including new unreleased songs.
People talking thru shows sucks ass. More whiskey helps me through it, but it shouldn't have to come to that...
EDIT: oh thanks ed for the setlist and summary.
