is a Troll?

Is this how it is? I find it odd that personally, I have purchased and love anything that Frank Black/Back Francis has released yet, by expressing my opinion about the dissapointment I had with FMRM in a REVIEW thread and certain people go nutz.

It reminds me of people's current arguments with "liberals". They disregard the fact that the constitution is being trampled on, checks and balances are being usurped or totally disregarded and people are now attacking the media just because of blind allegiance to the current US administration.

Don't fall for it. Yes, I am a Frank fan, No I don't like the current release, so what. Is this all about blind allegiance...can anyone step away from the useless admiration and calm down a bit. Some people like it some don't. Don't be so speedy with your "troll" cries.

Typing from Under The Bridge,

Perhaps you should calm down as well. I believe it was only one person that called you this, though you have been in every FMRM thread and others not related to FMRM to declare you hate it without much analysis as to why that might be.

There is nothing wrong with not liking the album, that's the nature of art. Nor of declaring it here on this forum. You're hardly alone if you read others' opinions. I suppose people would be happier if you were to do so with discussion instead of more childish things like "FB in the bargain bin of life" and "Fast Man Traitor Man".

People would be happier with a lot of things. Doesn't mean it's good for them.

Ah, yes. Clever.

I suppose we could extend your happiness argument and ask who gives a #%#% if you're feeling attacked unfairly. Maybe people calling you a troll is good for you if you were to attempt to discuss rather than spamming your opinion everywhere. A mystery for the ages.

The problem with that line of thinking is, I don't care. This thread is about blind allegiance to a figure as opposed to being able to criticize without being labled unamerican/troll. My personal feelings aren't relevant. They are merely being used as a case in point.

Reading your last post, i wonder who should calm down now? (*hint = you)

Hahahaha, yeah, I really flew off the handle there. Pass me the paper bag.

For the record, I agree we should be able to criticize freely, and you are and have been. You have also been criticized (ah, irony) because you haven't discussed, merely slammed/made fun of. I don't think this is unreasonable and happen to agree that if you are going to state your opinion (in your case, all over the place) you should have something to say as to why. If not, then perhaps being called a troll is not that far from the mark.

From archivemagazine: A troll is "A post that is intended to provoke readers; or a person who makes such a post"

Since you appear not to be interested in discussion, provocation seems somewhat plausible.

Yeah, I'm not interested in discussing it. That's why I started a whole thread about it.

Discussing it.

So far it hasn't been much of a discussion . Just you constantly telling me I am wrong.

As for your 'slamming it without a valid reason' argument...I'll repeat what I said in my initial posts...but I'll sum it up in distinct bullet points so you can follow along....

A collection of some of the greatest musicians seem all but wasted on this weak material.

I find it boring and not up to the potential that Frank has shown in the past.

It's like listening to someone's sentimentally bad poetry that only has meaning to themselves.

If I were to give my review, I would say "pass" for those reasons among others.

I don't get where you say I give no reasons. Sounds like plenty of reasons.

Now, I also said that it was just my opinion. I have never said "You are wrong and dumb if you like this." No I sure have not. That would be stupid of me. Just because I don't like it, someone else might.

This thread was started to bring up the question of whether someone can like frank Black without having to like EVERYTHING he does...what's your problem with that?

I think I know, and I think you answered the question with your own posts.

So keep calm, and discuss. Keep your ad hominem attacks to yourself.

Marcus4realius is ignoring Dean's main point: Marcus says he doesn't like the album, but he won't say *why*. Anyone who has followed Marcus' rants thus far is certainly interested in hearing the why. The answer may be as simple as he hasn't found a single thing to like about "Fast Man Raider Man," and that's that, but I suspect he can do better. Really, Marcus, let's discuss the details of why you don't like the album. You've raised your voice, you have our attention, so let's have it.

You're not reading what I'm reading. Try fleshing out your remarks. As a listener totally on board with FMRM, I would welcome substantive, enlightening criticism.

edit: Having read your recent posts, given how you’re against the stream, you need to say still more, especially about specific tracks. On Honeycomb I did sometimes feel I was hearing gifted craftsmen providing superficial performances of material they hadn’t fully ingested. But not so on FMRM. Despite the long list of classic sidemen, they seem much more fully integrated into Frank’s intent. Much as I await Frank’s upcoming Feldman stuff, I find myself hoping Frank offers a third album of roots music. FMRM just warms me up.

Listen to the rhetoric.... "rants"....

My posts are rants now.

Because I don't agree, my posts are rants.

This is so interesting. Troll, rants, the correlation between this and the liberal/conservative blogging sites are completely fascinating.

I guess everything has come down to "You're either with us or against us", huh.

I understand that it could be embarrassing on a site where Frank himself comes to read posts, but I'm not going to parlay any kind of feelings I have on a fan site just because "he" may be watching.

Frank doesn't know me, and I don't know him. Frank doesn't owe me anything, and everytime I buy his music I render unto Caeser what is Caeser's.

Now if you want to go into MORE detail as to why I do not choose to support this, I would be happy to. But I don't think you really do, I just think you want to call me names because I don't like it.

And that is a shame.

Marcus, obviously you aren't being stifled. Or this thread wouldn't exist and your account would be too locked for you to post in it even if it did. I'm trying to show you how you might be interpreted as a troll. I thank you for going back and finding those points you made. However, they all have something in common. They don't get to WHY. Just how you feel, y'know? There's no real analysis which makes discussion impossible.

They're boring. OK, but is that because you don't like the genre, or because you don't feel the drums have enough punch, or because you listened to it while watching CSPAN?

Weak material. In what way? Where have you said what makes it weak?

Bad poetry. Possibly the line that offers the most insight into why you may not like it - lyrics. But still realllly broad. Is this your problem with all songs or are you just trying to say you feel it sounds like it's too 'in touch with FB'.

I would say "pass". Again, no substance. It sums your feelings up, as all those do, but doesn't attempt to qualify.

It's like me saying, "I think it's a good record. Discuss" You can't refute that because there's nothing to refute, discuss, or ponder. The best you could do is come back and say either "Yep" or else "Is not!". Do you see?

Look through those threads. There are plenty of people who dislike the album and discuss without stirring things up. There is no grand conspiracy to shut up dissent. Yet.

Marcus, The problem is with your attitude, I'll say it straight, you read as someone who is being antagonistic for antagonisms sake. You make no constructive comments unless pushed and when questioned on your posts you jump to the defensive. This is a self centred thread and looks as "look at me" as overtly rude posting does. This is what makes you like a troll.

The fact is, it isn't about your opinion because other people criticise the album too, it's about being rude. Discussion involves a little give and take, and you're giving nothing.

Heh heh "yet"...funny.

Well, I guess I have to say, how are my reasons different than saying "I like it...Next" or "It rocks"? Usually people just say...I like this song or that song. Look at the threads and reviews. I gave a little more by saying the reasons I did. When I said it was boring, I mean...it doesn't move me like Frank normally does. When a guy like Frank does the "same ol' same ol'" just because he is learning to play within the boundaries of "traditional" songwriting, don't expect me to be impressed. When a group of musicians like the ones that played on his album make a record together that fails to move me even though collectively they have all played on just about every single record that DOES...i am perplexed and saddened that the individual providing the material (Frank) couldn't get it up enough to use them correctly. I believe it's a wasted opporunity and I don't happen to like it. I'm not a troll for that. I see your point that calling it "Shit Sandwich" was trollicious, but it was also a paen to Spinal Tap.

I don't think there is a conspiracy to squash dissent, just bringing up the question of whether or not blind allegiance is good or not.

The only two times you ever wrote to "speak" with me, you were quite snotty. So I could say the same thing about your posts then, couldn't I?

But thanks for repeating what Cult already said.

I'm giving nothing?? Still??? What more do I have to say??? First I give an explanation and Hammerhead says I haven't said anything, then I back up the explanation and YOU say I haven't said anything.

Marcus, every time i see you've posted somewhere in the last 2 weeks it is just to say "FMRM sucks" or something of the like. If you kept your comments to threads about reviewing the album, that is one thing. But you have gone and derailed perfectly valid threads just to get your voice heard again. This is spamming and trolling. Sorry, but it is.

That being said, i'm glad you're expressing your opinion strongly. However, there is a place (actually, a few) for it on the board - but every topic to slightly do with FMRM is not the place.

Only thread where it wasn't specifically about FMRM was the "What do you Hate" thread.

So your point is moot.

Make sure you ALSO point out all the posts I made having NOTHING to do with FMRM, ok, ok thanks.

But here is the point you are missing - you take any FMRM thread and turn it into a thread about whether or not your opinion is correct. Case in point:

The "Favorite song on FMRM" thread, you post in there to say that "When the Paint Grows Darker Still" doesn't sound like the Beatles' "Sexy Sadie" because "Sexy Sadie is a good song." That thread has nothing to do with whether or not you like the album, but to state what songs you do like. So there, you derailed it.

In the "I just got FMRM" thread, you say " Sorry, but if he keeps putting out FM/RM type albums, not even the Pixies legacy will save him from the discount bin of life." Once again, a thread about purchasing the album has turned into your commentary on it.

In the "Elijah sounds familiar" thread you say: "Probably not. Superabound was a good song." in regards to "Elijah" sounding like "Superabound."

For either thread, you could politely disagree with the comments that they sound like other songs, but you have to put a dig in there. That was my point - that you will take every opportunity to bash the album, despite whether the thread you are posting in is a thread dedicated to sharing both positive and negative opinions. If you started a "least favorite FMRM song" thread, that would be an appropriate place to say what tracks you don't like, unlike a "favorite songs" thread.

As far as I remember, blind allegiance has never existed here, not even in Dean's or Brian's posts. And by the way, most members of this forum are actually Pixies fans who don't even care about FB's solo stuff, so your "dissidence" is not a big deal - unless you really want it to be one.

I think it's all in how you read it.

The question was does "Paint" sound like Sexie Sadie, does Superabound sound like blah blah...

Maybe I should have spaced out the answer.

No. (I don't think it sounds like)

New thought "Sexy Sadie is a good song."

Not, no(comma) Sexy Sadie is a good song and blah blah isn't.

Feel me?

If it is all in how we read it, then we are all reading it one way, while you are reading it another.

The point is, like FMRM or not, there are places to discuss your opinions. However, not every thread about it is your personal invitation to bash it. Show some tact and maturity.

Stop trying to goad people into arguing with you. I think my definition of tact and maturity is pretty consistent with others on this board. Once again you are taking your solitary opinion and placing it over the hundreds of posting members of this forum. If you want a place to absent mindedly post your opinion with no one criticizing them, get a blogger account and turn off comments. If you post on a message board, expect people to disagree.
