i'm going in a few weeks. aside from throwing rocks at tiven, what do i absolutely need to do? i'm not content to spend several days dragging myself around to opry-esque attractions and i loathe top 40 country music.
help a sista out.

Wear a cool cowboy shirt with little tassles, and travel around on the back of a truck driven by Robert Altman. Or something.

Opry Mills mall is a great way to kill some time. It is HUGE! I also like the way it looks.

There is...NOTHING...to do in Nashville. Do yourself a favour and find yourself a really comfortable hotel with HBO, because you'll be spending a lot of time there.
Opry Mills Mall...there's an insanely overpriced Tower Records store and a Gibson guitar factory, both of which might hold your attention for approximately 45 minutes, but that's it.
Maybe you can catch Rich Gilbert playing at the Bluegrass Inn, as he apparently plays there quite often.

There is a hole-in-the-wall bluegrass bar called the Station Inn. I highly recommend catching 'The Sidemen' who are a collection of session players and blugrass cats who knock around Nashville. I think they play Tuesday nights.
I don't go buying bluegrass records (I should), but, I love music and seeing these really good players up there having fun playing classic country and bluegrass was a great night. Prepare yourself for a dive though, long tables and cheap chairs, but, wait for the music and it will be worth it. IMHO of course. |

One of the best places in Nashville, Gruhn Guitars (remember the American Express commercial?). All the really nice guitars are upstairs! There are many great music shops.
I stayed close to downtown (400 Broadway). It wasn't long after the tornado had hit, I was drinking on the main level of a bar where the second floor was destroyed.
Nashville, where else can you go see the breakfast-show at a diner? 9:00am, live music...They have a fantastic music scene, of course. I didn't see any Top-40 Country when I was there, lots of singer-songwriters and a very good Blues band (with a beautiful saxophonist).
If you're into antiques, they have lots of those big antique malls on the highways (?pikes?). I was at one in a converted mill in Nashville itself where they had a Fender Steel Guitar, I just about...
If I had stayed longer I would have gone to the Saturn plant, but I'm odd that way.
Dollywood was basically a large discount mall with a shooting gallery.
I should have demanded to see the inside of the Ryman Auditorium. It was very, very cool for me to be at the door though. I have this video in my mind of guitarist Lenny Breau lugging his axe down the street.
Something else I didn't do was to go down to where all the record companies are. Maybe Tiven can give you a tour, you know, I'm sure y'al wouldn't dislike each other so much in person, kiss and make-up.
There was an area near Riverfront Park, where they had a festival going, that looked to have some very large bars and shopping, I think. I should have done that too.
I can't imagine anyone not enjoying it. It's sooo much better than Memphis. |

Dollywood's in Pigeon Forge, btw. It's about two hour's driving time from Nashville. So even that's out. (And if you're used to the likes of Disneyworld and Six Flags, Dollywood will seem like a middle-class, backwoods redneck's back yard anyway.)
Nashville's not far from Knoxville, where I live (about three solid hours away.) I used to go there when I was younger to visit my relatives, but it's been a while since I've visited them. So, I don't have any adult experiences in that city, see Hammerhand's post above!

maybe...but Opryland is closed now. The Opryland Hotel is nice to visit, expensive to stay at, and actually probably not something you'd think was very exciting. |

thanks for the suggestions, kids. i had a fabulous time and all the job interviews went really well. unfortunately no one wants to pay relocation so i'll be stuck down here for at least a few more months saving up for the move. most of downtown nashville was really tacky and touristy so we kept busy visiting civil war sites and antique stores and such but stayed in brentwood. totally geeked out with excitement at the old civil war hospitals complete with blood stains on the floor and mummified severed limbs full of musket shot. they wouldn't let me take pictures of those thanks to kfs we played moon golf at the opryland mall and i got a new (scratch and dent) guitar for $40. how come no one told me central tennessee was so freakin' scenic?
i also finally ate at a baja fresh and it was no big damn deal. how could you lead me astray like that, floop? i trusted you.

You probably already know this, but all of your relocation costs will be tax deductible. That doesn't help pay them, but ultimately makes it cheaper.
Just finished reading about the Civil War battle at Nashville (near the end of the war). The Rebels got thumped there (one of the few times). I'm going to be in Memphis in about 2 weeks, but I don't think there was much Civil War action there.
I think carnitas are a sketchy proposition. Usually I like the first half of my order and the during second half I feel like my heart is stopping. I can't decide whether I want to go to Graceland. |

Baja Fresh? You should've just eaten at Naugles and saved yourself a few bucks. Baja Fresh=Mexican food for the khaki wearing, Mad About You set.

obviously Baja Fresh is not really even real mexican food, but any Mexican Food afficionado can recognize that it's good. especially for a chain restaurant. i mean, everything is grilled fresh right there. nothing is frozen. it's not even really a fast food, but for a chain fast-food Mexican type restaurant, there is no comparison.
At Baja Fresh, we don't serve fast food... we serve fresh food as fast as we can®

yeah, that was a great conversation to have with my boyfriend.
"ooh! a baja fresh! we have to eat there!" "why? it looks crappy." "because, umm, on the forum there are these guys..."
taco bell was better than this place. i should have known when i asked for beef and the kid behind the counter wanted to know which kind of beef i wanted - the steak, pork or chicken kind.
moon golf is really cheesy black light mini golf. we did that right after eating at the rainforest cafe which should tell you something about the maturity level we're on
