Ok folks, here starts the massive task of trying to pin down as much about these tracks as possible. I've done some of the preliminary work, but this is a team effort.

Let's start by pinning down in which session each track was recorded in. This will help us narrow down who played on each track. Here is my list, which i'm sure is flawed somehow. All songs/persons marked with a question mark is a pure guess on my part. Anyone with info, please step in!

Now I'm going to start a section for each song, where eventually Tre can just dump all this song info into the Discopedia, but until it is confirmed, we'll keep it here. Also, please post all non-recording info in Tre's DB thread. This is just to get the recording liner notes perfect, not the lyrics or the stories behind the songs.

Great work, Brian. You should add the instruments next to the musicians' names. What else to add...

* Oct. 2004 session: it's said it took place between the Pixies gig in Nashville and Tampa. Nashville was on Oct. 6th and Tampa on Oct. 8th, so the session was on the 7th.
* Lyle Workman is credited on the guitar, I guess for the Oct '04 session.
* About the LA session it's said "A birthday party for Black in L.A. triggers the last four tracks." Who knows which are these 4 songs though.

So I browsed through Tiven's posts. That was long and tedious but I found some tidbits of info:

* Where The Wind Is Going: "was from the last day of the HONEYCOMB sessions with Cropper and Reggie Young on guitars, Spooner on keys, David Hood on bass, and I believe Akil Thompson on drums (although my memory does play tricks on me and it could have been his dad Chester)."

* "'Fare Thee Well' was remixed in Chicago, likewise 'Kiss My Ring' and 'Highway To Lowdown." But not 'Where The Wind', that's the Nashville mix."

Dogsleep: "is from the sessions at Jack's a few months later, and it's Levon Helm and Billy Block on drums, Bob Babbitt and Tom Petersson on basses, Ian McLagan on keys, mostly Lyle on guitar but there could be a little Cropper & Duane Jarvis creeping in, Wayne Jackson on trombone, and Frank Black on vocals and a taste of the ukelele." "That's Lyle playing the guitar solo at the end."

* If Your Poison Gets You: "Drums is actually a combination of Levon Helm and Billy Block, with Simon Kirke on tambourine. And lonely persuader, that's me on alto sax."

* In The Time Of My Ruin: "Duane Jarvis-gtr, P.F. Sloan-piano, Jim Keltner-drums, Carol Kaye-bass, Dave Phillips-pedal steel, Frank Black-vocals."

* "End of last year I convinced P.F. to make a new album, which I produced, which includes several old songs as well as a bunch of new ones. As I was doing it I was at the same time finishing off mixes of FASTMANRAIDERMAN, and corralled P.F. to sing harmonies on "Fast Man," which turned out beautifully."

* LA Session: "So we have Keltner and Ferrone each on two tracks. Kaye, Sloan, Jarvis, and a pedal steel player our artist brought who y'all may be familiar with named Dave Phillips playing on all four."

Perhaps I can be of some assistance, afterall. Since Jack Clement is the only dobro player listed and "Golden Shore" has a dobro in it, that would probably mean Mr. Clement plays the dobro in that song, and probably provides backing vocals as well.

Great job guys. So, apparently the 4 songs that were recorded in LA are "In the Time", "It's Just Not", "Sad Old World" and "Don't Cry That Way"?...

Well, i know for certain that "In the TIme" and "Its Just Not" were. And by tone/deduction, i think the other two are "The Real El Eay" and "Sad Old World." "Don't Cry..." sounds more Nashville to me.

I'd have to say that Dog Sleep, Johnny Barleycorn, and a lot of disc 1 was in LA, but could be wrong...

I'm pretty sure its not for two reasons Dean. #1 - the tracklisting for disc 1 was leaked in late January 06, less than a month after the LA recording sessions. I think that turnaround is a bit too quick. #2 - there is clearly Baritone sax and trombone on those two tracks, and Wayne Jackson is only (apparently) playing on the 24 hour marathon session. Ditto for Lyle's guitar solo on "Dog Sleep" - Lyle wasn't present in L.A.

Hmm... well put. I think they could turn it around that fast, but the Lyle solo is a good argument.

(I've been told) Billy Block, Spooner Oldham, Marty Brown and Brooks Waton (house engineer) sang back up for Johnny Barleycorn's chorus, at The Cowboy Arms Hotel.

I can confirm the 4 LA tracks are Don't Cry, Moment, ruin, and El Ray.

I only play alto sax on "If Your Poison," by the way.

Glad y'all are diggin it. Thanks.

Thanks Jon. I like your production, especially on the October '04 and '05 sessions. Imho it's livelier and less ethereal than on HC.

Brian, looks like we were both right (or wrong) :)

Is the second bass in "Dog Sleep" that enters on the line "gettin' that dog sleep..." a contrabass or an electric bass? It's got that really thick sound that makes me think it's a contrabass.

All the bass is electric, Dogsleep has two bassists, Bob Babbitt and Tom Petersson.
Backgrounds on Johnny B are Marty Brown, Billy Block, and I think Buddy Miller's in there as well.
I forgot that I'm playing alto on "Seven Days" as well as the section with Wayne Jackson.
"Sad Old World" was cut Oct 05 with Reggie, Cropp & Buddy et al.

I will consult with Big Boss Man and see if he'd object to me putting my semi-complete credits up.
Keep up the good work, lads and lassies.
bye,

Mr. Tiven, thanks for clearing that up. Another question about "Dog Sleep": apparently, according to the above credits, there are two drum sets on that one. It sounds to my ears like it might be one drummer on the left and the other one on the right. Is that correct? If so, which drummer is which?

We're a bit stuck here. Just 2-3 thoughts I had:
* Dave Philips plays pedal steel on all 4 songs from the LA Session.
* It's Just Not Your Moment has female background vocals, that can only be Mrs Thompson-Clark.
* What does a mandoguitar sound like? And a ukulele? There's a strange sounding instrument on Holland Town, not sure it's an actual guitar.
* Also, I hear more than 2 guitars on Raider Man. Was there anyone else playing besides Frank and Duane, or did they do overdubs?

A mandoguitar sounds like a combo between (shock shock) a mandolin and a guitar - i don't hear one in the mix, but i also haven't really focused on it yet. I think there must have been overdubs on "Raiderman" and good call on the Violet and Dave Philips thing. Also, listening to "The End of the Summer" i've discovered i'm pretty sure that is where the Swan family is singing. I'll add all this in soon.
