Long before Frank became Frank, he was a neighbor of mine in Harbor City, California. I knew him as Chucky Thompson and one summer Chucky set up a little bread baking business and sold loafs around the neighborhood. Not sure if he made much money... but the bread was pretty good.

Hello, Buddy. Hmmm. If this is true, Frank is truly an entrepreneur.

It's true... maybe Frank will see this and confirm. His little brother Errol helped a bit, and I wanted to get in on it too but Chucky said it was a family business. We are 10 and 12 years old, ya know.

Frank, did your yeast-filled years include bagels or Challah? I used to make some killer bagels as a Noah's Bagel's baker in Huntington Beach about 10 years ago.

Couple more thoughts from Frank's youth in California... He dabbled with the acoustic guitar back then, but nothing to write home about. His mom had a sister much younger then herself. In fact Chucky's aunt (Dee Dee) was just a year or two older than Chucky. We all lived in a Condo complex near an ice skating rink. Chucky, his mom, and his brother lived in one unit. Chucky's grandma and grandpa, along with his great grandma and aunt Dee Dee lived in another unit, and my family lived a couple of door's down. Chucky, Dee Dee and I all hung out together and we spent our time torturing Chucky's brother (he was kind of a pest) and his great grandmother (she was a bit senile). Not proud of the latter but hey, we were kids. Their family was quite religious, except for his grandpa, he went to the track and bet on the horses two or three times a week. Both Chucky and his brother were sensitive kids with an artistic bent, but they were both also big boys and Chucky in particular was very strong. I remember he thumped my ass pretty good one time for picking on his little brother. I guess that day he was in "big brother protection mode" as opposed to "big brother torture mode". Ah, wonderful memories from 30 years ago...

Best. Thread. Ever. Shall we comb the database for references to bread, yeast, and/or early entrepreneurship that we have thus far overlooked?

This makes me tear up. I was also my little brother's protector/torturer throughout our childhood. I think I did more torturin' than I did protectin' but he still loves me nonetheless.

Okay gang, I got just a couple of memories left of my childhood friend Chucky Thompson. I wish I had more for you but I toasted my brain in the 80's smoking way to much herb.

Anyway, as I mentioned, the family was quite religious. My family was Catholic and there was a large and very popular Catholic church near the Jr. High that Chucky, his aunt Dee Dee and I attended. My family attended that church. Suprisingly enough, Chucky and his family did not attend the Catholic church. I went with them a few times to their church, which was very near our school too. This church was a born-again Christian church and was a lot more fun to visit. They had a rock band playing Christian music and the congregation sang along and closed their eyes and held their arms out in front of them - palms up. This was very new to me but Chucky and his family were way into it.

Now I'm just guessing here, but later in life Chucky decided that "Frank Black and the Catholics" just had a better ring to it then "Frank Black and the Born-Again Christians."

The last thing that sticks in my mind about my time with Chucky, his aunt Dee Dee and his little bother(no type-o) Errol is the song "Brandy" by The Looking Glass. The four of us used to sit in Dee Dee's little patio behind her condo and play the tape of that song over and over. Chucky would strum his accoustic guitar and Dee Dee and I would sing it. To this day when I hear that song I think of us on that patio.

That's pretty much all I got... we were all young teens and I was way more interested in Dee Dee than I was her chubby little nephews Chucky and Errol. I can tell you this though, if you had told me at that time that Chucky would go on to be a rock star, I would not have believed it.

"The sailors say, 'Brandy you are a fine girl, what a good wife you would be - such a fine girl - but my life, my love, my lady - is the sea...."

Ha, I have no delusions of grandeur- the music business is shit and I'll never get signed. Maybe the yeast business will treat me better.

Frank's last album was kinda crummy, a lot of half-baked ideas, but I'm glad to say this new one is a lot butter.
