From the 6/16 Entertainment Weekly:
Twelve CDs Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon Say You've Gotta Hear!
12. Various Artists - Heroes and Villains: Music Inspired By The Powerpuff Girls (Kid Rhino) "I was never really a big fan of the Pixies, but the Frank Black song is insane." (Thurston Moore)

I don't think that it's exactly a crime if someone doesn't like the Pixies, but it bother's me that someone like Thurston Moore would be anything other than complimentary towards them. Sonic Youth's music is pretensious and mostly un-listenable
I'm bothered by the idea that SY is somehow better than other bands because they're so "experimental" and "original". They're the musical equivalent of modern abstract painting. |

I couldn't agree with you more about SY (with a few songs that are exceptions). It's like the type of music that would be pretty fun to make, but is absolutely unbearable to sit and listen to (and don't get me started on the opening bands at the concert of theirs I went to a couple of years ago!). I DESPISE pretentiousness in music. I feel the same way about the Mars Volta.

It's a shame he's so dismissive like that. The Pixies aren't exactly bland pop.

Well, to be fair, he didn't actually SAY anything about their being "bland pop," did he?
I've never been that interested in anything I've heard by SY, but hey, Thurston can like what he wants.

I suppose he didn't criticise them, and he has got the right to like whatever he likes. Maybe I just assume that SY are kind of being arrogant, sometimes!
SY have some brilliant songs.

Who cares, they rode Nirvana's coattails to Geffen and they are obviously in debt to the "alternative rock" explosion, but they remain obsessed by shit that people record in their bathrooms with a electric toothbrush. They were never tastemakers for a majority and never will be. I do like their records...Sister is cool. I think Frank digs 'em too. Frank is also weird about acknowledging Nirvana, even though he's gotta realize they are better than Jonny Polonsky. |

In my limited exposure to SY I've found things to like. Don't know the context but interesting that the comment is on Pray for the Girls, and as "insane" no less. Frank is our guy about town.

There's an old Pixies interview were Frank says he thinks they'd make good soundtrack music.
In SY's documovie '1991-The Year Punk Broke', Thurston says "We've seen some Black Francis action', when listing off some of the bands they've played with during the tours featured in the film, but Pixies/BF do not appear in it, although a number of band performances are included. I'm hoping there's some unused footage that could pop up on a future DVD relase of 1991-TYPB. Hmmmm....

In 1994, SY put out the album "Experimental Jet-SeT...", and I liked the single "Bull In The Heather", plus Kim Gordan co-directed the Cannonball video so I got the album- ended up being disappointed in all the songs except "Bull". The other albums I've heard since, I like less. |

interestingly enough, they did make a good soundtrack in this film

the soundtrack was one of the best parts (and surprisingly non-sonic youth sounding)

I thought Thurston was complimenting FB here. I don't think that the word "insane" carries a negative connotation; many of my favorite songs I would consider insane. |

Moore is giving FB credit - so what if he isn't a Pixies fan? He can still dig a song.
And Kathleen Hanna is cuter than words.

Don't try to understand mr Moore. He's allways deviant and ironical, once he said he hated "junky rockers like Richard Hell", that they were "uninteristing and empty". Not mentioning that he came to NY because of him (and the Ramones) and latter made a band with him (Dim Stars).
Something else: Black Francis once said that when he was wondering about what could be the pixies sound, he thought "the alternative noisy sound like sonic youth and bands like that youth could be a good option for us" (not an exact quote). Really saying that like "that was the good moove to do at that time, even if I didn't really care about that band". That interview allways made me laught, like the ones he says only cares about money, or that J mascis is singing like he's shiting but is a good guitarist (a good information at that time for the guitaristic tastes of the man, then you could have been less surprised when hearing Frank Black And The Catholics...) |

A friend of mine has their soundtrack for Made IN USA on cassette:
http://sonicyouth.com/mustang/lp/index.html
(Look under 'albums', you can't make a direct link to each section!)
...From the 'soundtrack' section, strange:
"A curious item, it appears to be an actual "original motion picture soundtrack" for Made In USA, released back in 1988 when the film originally came out, long before SY released their own soundtrack in 1995."
It's not on the soundtrack album, but their cover of The Carpenter's Superstar appears in The Frighteners. On the film's commentary track, Peter Jackson says they wanted some really noisy music for the particular scene, and his partner Fran Walsh came across the song!!
BTW, I wonder what props Thurston gave Frank!

Kim and Kim do Little Trouble Girl on SY DVD. On Pixies DVD Bowie says Pixies are best, outside SY. SY Rocks but there's not any FB release or bootleg that I haven't heard ten dozen times and still love. I like their Superstar and Diamond Sea and a lot of others too but their new release is a little off from what I expected. Some of their stuff bites. I'm a FB Fan so what can I say?

Sorry Kids, Sonic Youth, Frank Black, and Pixies are likely my top three groups. I think for one to say the negative things about SY and then say they dont really know their music that well is fairly pretentious in itself.
I will readily admit SY is not that accesible. To understand them one really needs to understand the No-wave movement and art scene in NYC in the 80's. I think its completely fair to say SY was likely in a completely different mind set that the Pixies simply did not mix into it at the time.
The issue is complex. Give 'em props for coming back around. |

Actually it's the other way around, sort of. SY were already on with Geffen and they helped facilitate Nirvana's signing to Geffen.
