Frank Black talks to Laura Barnett about seeing Kinky Friedman at the Scala, London, June 2003
I was hanging out in London on my night off. I checked my Time Out to see what was going on, and there he was - Kinky Friedman. I just decided to go. It turned out to be a very memorable night.
The venue was so old, it felt as if it had been there for ever. Kinky was up on stage performing with two other guys. I guess you could call it a band, but there was no drummer or anything like that. Just the three of them on guitar.
He was very funny and charming. I'd never seen him live before; actually, I'd never even listened to him before. I guess it goes to show just how entertaining a guy he is because I wasn't familiar with the material, yet he totally won me over.
I liked the fact he was both politically correct and politically incorrect. It was in everything he did, his whole personality; it's who he was - singer, writer and public speaker. He just kind of wrapped it all up together. I felt as if he appealed to the angel in me, and also the devil.

I've listened to Kinky for awhile, but only started reading him the other day, when I picked up a £2 paperback copy of "The Kinky Friedman Crime Club" on the beach. It collects three of his detective stories, A Case Of Lone Star, Greenwich Killing Time & When The Cat's Away. I'm enjoying the first, which is a murder mystery where the protagonist kills off performers at a NY C&W Club after sending them Hank Williams lyrics that contain clues about what he's going to do to them. As good an idea as any. Kinky himself is the Jewish-Cowboy-singer-cum-Village-detective that's about to perform next, on New Year's Eve (when Hank died). Lots of cheesy oneliners, if you're into that kinda stuff. I am. I also saw a Bill Clinton interview where he said Kinky's his favourite writer. Hope that doesn't put you off. Bob and Tom are fans too. (For the records, his remastered debut "Sold American" was a good place to start for me.) |

Was that when the Kinkster was over here doing Jewish National Book Week?
I met him twice that week & went on a surreal 24 hours (woke up on the morning of day 1 in the knowledge I had to deliver someone else's presentation in a part of town I'd never visited, then had to hoof it across town to see some unwell aged relatives before heading to Bishop Stortford for a TV recording in what looked like a converted old shed - which finished up with me drinking Guiness with a lawyer!)
Still, the Kinkster ROCKS!
