thom yorke, leaked a while ago, got it nice and early thanks to llamadance.
what do you think? first few listens it struck me as inaccessable electronic lo fi rubbish. but after 10 or so listens, i'm really really digging it.

The first time I heard it I rolled my eyes at Thom having a go at obscure and interesting, I've not made my mind up yet. So far though I think it's under 'difficult'.

I just got hold of it. I like it, I think I prefer it to Hail To The Thief, even. At least it's not trying to be too many things at once. Of the couple of times I've listened to it, Harrowdown Hill stands out, and a couple more I can't remember the names of.
I've not really been able to take Radiohead so seriously (maybe they take themselves too seriously, maybe that's the problem) since Kid A. I always felt that they were too ambitious, to a fault - it's not wrong to be ambitious, but they were playing sufficiently to their strengths to pull it off. I think they were going in too many different directions at once, and weren't able to make a coherent sound. The Eraser, however, seems more focused, more consistent, and therefore has my approval. Huzzah.

I didn't like it at first listen, except 'Black Swan' and another I don't remember the name. If I need 9 more sessions to enjoy it, I think I quit.

I agree. Although I think HTTT reedemed them (for me, that is), KID A and AMNESIAC were not good (for me, that is). KID A was a dissapointment with a couple cool songs, and I was willing to accept it and look forward to AMNESICA, thinking it's okay for any artist to stretch out and be experimental. But when AMNESIAC came out, it was more of the same nonsense (for me, that is)! I absolutely hated it. In fact, I was so dismayed, I threw ALL my Radiohead cd's away. I hated them, lol! When HTTT came out, I bought it out of interest, having not heard anything from it, and was very refreshed and happy they had returned to something listenable. I have not heard this latest Yorke thing...just wanted to agree on the above Cheeseman point.

It's strange because I like the nonsense unlistenable electronica normally. I guess I think other people do it better, but people assume it must be great art if it's Radiohead. OK Computer is great art, Kid A is pursuing something other than the band's strength. The Eraser is where it's finally starting to sound like a viable sound. To me, that is.

This is pretty much the first I've heard of a new Thom Yorke album, and I'm already disappointed to find that it is yet more "electronic soundscape" rubbish. Seriously, Thom, you know why your band is so respected, so quit fucking us about and pick up your bloody guitar already.

I think the problem, Simon, is in perception and expectation. People expected something from Radiohead. They either expected OK Computer the second because that's what they did best or they expected great art. What they got is a good album if you take the album for what it is. Kid A was a bold move for a band who could have sat in their niche and become U2 part 2. I respect them for trying it. I love Kid A myself but then I didn't have any other electronica references for comparison when I first heard it. I didn't have any expectations before the album because at the time Kid A came out I was pretty ill and I actually got it while I was in hospital. So to not have the whole hype for a band I quite blatantly love (see tattoo for reference) when they released a new completely different album probably helped in my acceptance of Kid A just for being Kid A, not for being a radiohead album or an electronica album. Moreso than OK computer it gels well as an album, more like the bends did. Tracks like morning bell are just beautiful in my not so humble opinoin.
HTTT is patchy hit and miss and if anything disappointed me it was the vague feeling of the band trying to recapture that which everyone wanted from them. There are some fantastic tracks on that album, there's some utter toss as well.
I need to give the eraser some more time.

i've had the eraser on repeat at the office for a week or so--just background noise. works well for that. I think it's hit and miss. i really like analyse and cymbal rush...not so much the clock. but i need to dedicate some more listen time i suppose.
and i dig amnesiac. that album was on constant shuffle for about 6 months after it came out. still find myself re=listening to tunes from it on my ipod. kid a, however, i've not listened to since it came out...time for another listen i reckon.
and ditto on kitten's comment on the bends--great album! |
