I'm something of a novice in world music. I've never quite got the idea that indigenous music is automatically great or better than pop music, so I've never really given it all that much time.
But. I'm exploring, as sort of a project for myself, the music of all the different countries taking part in the world cup. The internet's a wonderful thing and throws up lots of helpful advice (I love you wikipedia), but I thought I'd get some actual recommendations on the go by asking you lot.

So, any advice? I'd love to hear your recommendations of music from some of the countries in the tournament: Angola anyone? Saudi Arabia? Costa Rica?

Thanks!

"Angola" by Cesaria Evora and remixed by Carl Craig is mindblowing. She's not from Angola herself, she's from Cape Verde.

Does that give you an opportunity to use Kristin Hersh - Costa Rica then?

Sorry, I've no idea about world music at all.

When did you get the name Paul in front of your name Simon?

Cesaria Evora - Angola (Carl Craig remix)

Ali Farka Toure - Dofana

Tell me what you think.

It can be intimidating to encounter a university bookstore shelf full of CDs from these guys: http://www.roughguides.com/music/world.html . I'm afraid my world music familiarity is restricted to Andean flutes, Jamaica, No Quarter by Page/Plant, and some of that stuff Paul Simon was doing twenty years ago.

Thanks Denis - I like the sound of both of those. Mind telling me a bit about the artists? I've heard you mention Ali Farka Toure before, so I guess you're a fan. Evora I looked up. She's from Cape Verde islands, innit.

I'm about halfway into my project, and I'm having a great time looking all this up. So far, I've uncovered: Angolan folk; Argentine punk; Australian post-rock; Brazilian tropicalia; Costa Rican salsa; Croatian europop; Czech bluegrass; Ecuadorean electro-noise; English punk; French electronica; German krautrock; Ghanaian highlife; and today Dutch gabber. I've had a whale of a time!

However, I would still appreciate any suggestions, especially for Iran, Ivory Coast, Paraguay, Korea, Togo and Tunisia. Little help?

You've only just discovered English Punk?

I bet Croatian europop was interesting.

We're talking sex tapes and scandal. It certainly was interesting. I recommend Levon Levan highly.

And I said 'uncovered', not 'discovered'. Important difference.

You could put on some Deep Dish. They live in the USA but they're from Iran. From Ivory Coast, I only know Tiken Jah Fakoly (not that I like him. It's reggae). And Google mentions Bella Bello and Papavi King Mensah as the cult singers from Togo.

King Sunny Adé I like a lot, Nigerian party music with lots of Hawaiian slide guitars and synths. Iīve got a record called Juju Music recorded in 82 or 83, some songs sound like what a lot of northern musicians are just beginning to tinker with now.
A bunch of Columbians and Africans called La Patrona are worth checking out too.
And South African jazzman Kippie Moeketsi, well you canīt go wrong with a lot of township jazz, itīs bright and angular and funky.
