You know what, I know it's a pathetically obviuos choice, but I've always loved what Albini did with Surfer Rosa. Even though he chopped bits of songs out or whatever, I love the sound of that album.

It's difficult to say. There are so many great producers and so many genres of music, and it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges on a lot of albums. I am, of course, a Brian Wilson fanatic, and I could easily say on any given day that Pet Sounds is the greatest pop production ever. But of course, I've got to mention some of Phil Spector's amazing productions, especially Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes Featuring Veronica and A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records. He's absolutely from another world. His productions are just mind-boggling. Recently I've been getting into a lot of Curt Boettcher's stuff. The album Begin by The Millennium is very well-produced. Also worth mentioning is the unrelease Sndy Salisbury album called Sandy that he produced, which may actually be my favourite of his. There are some really incredible productions on that album, especially "I Just Don't Know How to Say Goodbye" and his rendition of "Come Softly." I'm also a huge fan of Lenny Waronker and his work with Randy Newman and on Van Dyke Parks' first album. Like I said, it's difficult, but I still think Pet Sounds is the best album production ever.

Agreed, and generally Albini's production fullstop.
It's such an enormous indie-noise-rock cliché, but he really does have the best drum sounds. It sounds like drumkit, not an overly-processed drum machine, something that can't be said for today's modern rock production.
And the way you can hear the guide vocal in the background, slightly out of time/tune with the main vocal.. or maybe it's doubletracked to sound like that on purpose.. either way, I fackin' love it!

Albini does drums really, really well. It's basically down to micing them properly with really good mics, all simple things but done so, so well. I don't think he gets the rest of it as right though - his vocals aren't always the greatest. That said, check out his albums with low, which actually disprove my point.
I'll shut up now.

Talking of drums, I'm quite partial to that almost-drum-machine sound on the Strokes first album.
I don't really have a production favourite, although I'm rather keen on the general sound of Fear of Music - Talking Heads.

I remember reading something, I think it was Kurt Cobain talking about In Utero, and he said Albini used a lot of old microphones, German makes and the like. Apparently, he likes to stick microphones everywhere to capture that unique, live sound.

It's a played out record but Nirvana's "Nevermind" sounds pretty close to perfection production wise in my opinion. Best drum sound I've ever heard on record.

New Skin for the Old Ceremony - Leonard Cohen
Beautiful arrangements. Cohen's voice seems very well recorded. Very full.

didn't albini only produce 'things we lost...' from low? i really like albini's drum sound too on many records, but he just destroyed it on mogwai's 'my father my king' - they sound horrible.
i think the best production of any record i can think of is Pod by the Breeders. yes, an albini production....just perfection.
but my favourite drum sound is on the beginning of '2 rights make 1 wrong' from mogwai's 'rock action'. i used to listen to the intro over and over again on my really good components and it blew my mind every time...that was produced by dave friedman i believe...which is weird cause everything else he's done has been poor.

Cobain felt Nevermind sounded a little too slick and poppy, not that he was knocking Butch Vig, it's kind of how he felt after Nirvana's success, I think. He seemed to have wanted to go back to a rwwer sound, hence Albini.

to be honest, my statement was a little of an exaggeration. i haven't heard enough of mercury rev's stuff to form an opinion about that - i was stating it from his work with mogwai - particularly come on die young and rock action. it's just that the drum intro on 2 rights juyst blows everything else away....

Pixies - Surfer Rosa My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
However, I really don't like the production of Bandwagonesque by Teenage Fanclub: there is a distinct lack of oomphiness in the guitars (apart from I think 'Is This Music?' was done really well.) Anybody else think the same?

I actually closely listened to the production on Doolittle a few days ago, some of the drum, (specifically snare) sounds were horrible! Proof that if the song and performance is good enough, it doesn't matter how it sounds.

I've had more than one live sound engineer play Queensryche's Empire as he was dialing in our sound checks. I'm not a huge fan of Queensryche, but I guess it's commonly known as the most perfect rock record soundwise.
We could argue all day about the best produced record. It comes down to a sound that you find interesting enough to listen to over and over. Great songs typically get lumped into the "great produced" category, as well. That's why I have a difficult time deciding if any, or all of FB's music has been helped, or hindered by producers. They're all great, interesting, songs. |

I really like Dave Fridmann's work, that guy can fill out a record. See also, Flaming Lips, and the new Low album (again with the Low...), that sounds great to my ears.
I did an assignment on Steve Albini as part of my degree - it was great to turn up the volume and kick off Kerosene in front of a room full of kinda nerdy tech-heads.

Hey Cheeseman, while we're talking about Low... Don't know if you're aware of this but Carla Bozulich (one of my favorite female artists) just put out a record on Constellation with a bunch of guys from Silver Mt Zion, and there's a cover of Low's "Pissing" on the album. Thought you might be interested. I haven't heard it yet.

What about the "worst production on an album ever"? Surely it has to be something by Nigel Godrich. The guy has the ability to turn every other album by artists I like into something blander than a Dave Matthews Band record.
