Since other threads keep being derailed it's probably best to have one place to discuss the Premiership (and other leagues if you want).
Let's talk football! |

Looks like I have another team to root for, gotta support my homeboy....
(from Wikipedia)
Jay DeMerit (born December 4, 1979 in Green Bay, Wisconsin) is an American soccer player. He was a three-sport high school athlete in Wisconsin, where he participated in basketball and track in addition to soccer. DeMerit played NCAA soccer at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he moved from playing forward to defender. He played with Chicago Fire Premier, the reserves team for the Chicago Fire in the USL Premier Development League. Taking the advice of an English teammate, he moved to England with only $1,800 in an attempt to find a club. He started off playing on a Sunday league team earning only $40 a week. He eventually hooked up with semi-professional team Northwood F.C. Northwood faced off against Watford F.C. in only their second preseason match. DeMerit impressed enough to earn a trial at Watford. He signed a one year contract with Watford but was so impressive that the club signed him to a three year deal within months of signing his original contract. On May 21, 2006, he scored the first goal, and was named Man of the Match, as Watford gained promotion to the Premier League by defeating Leeds United 3-0.

Gotta face like Charles Bronson, straight outta Green Bay, Wisconsin.
I feel discriminated against, being a Championship supporter. I should lodge a complaint. I don't want to just discuss which of our players will be sold to a Premiership team.

You can discuss all English leagues here.
Will any Premiership teams want any of your players?

I'd have loved to have Hartson but I don't think he would come here.
And yeah, Huth is likely to go to Everton too.
But to go from wanting Andy Johnson to Emile Heskey is like last season when we bid for Michael Owen and then when we didn't get him bid for Dean Windass instead!

Yes we definitely bid for both of those (I think the Michael Owen bid was accepted by Real Madrid). We also bid for Scott Parker aswell but he wouldn't even speak with us.
As for my source...Dave Whelan and Paul Jewell on the telly last year :)
The transfer speculations around this time of the year drive me crazy!

I am no longer a championship supporter but you can hardly begrudge me as my first ever game was in August 1994 Sheffield Uniteds first game back in the first division after 3(?) years in the top flight. I have since only ever seen them in the first division until August this year. Woo hoo.
On a side note, Southampton will be hot favourites for promotion this year. Reckon you can do it or is it all hype?

I think we've got a fair chance - towards the end of season we pulled ourselves together a bit and consolidated, especially with George Burley at the helm. I think a couple of cunning purchases would help, and we'll see what happens.

Eesh. Cant believe we forked out 8.6 mill for a balding championsip player. He better start putting them away, straight away, or the shit will hit the fan.
Moyes better be fucking right on this one or the Goodison faithfull are gonna start calling for his head.

HaHa nothing. If truth be told I think Im balding myself. My dad keeps teasing me because he read in the paper that the gene for baldness was passed down through the mothers side of the family. My mums brothers were both bald as snooker balls by the age of 25. Eep.

I heard it was the father's side. Certainly is in my case anyway.
Anyway, Zidane is bald and he's AMAZING! (although Andy Johnson is not)

I think I'd better try to enjoy this upcoming season because it may be my last as a supporter of a Premiership team for a while. It seems each week more and more of our best players are wanting to leave (Jimmy Bullard, Pascal Chimbonda and now Jason Roberts) and the club doesn't seem to give a shit. We haven't signed one player yet and could soon have lost up to 5 players already.
I'm usually one of the more optomistic football fans but I feel we are seriously going to struggle next season. It's looking like anything above 18th place at the end of next season will be a miracle. [semi-rant over]
If there's one man who can perform miracles though it's Paul Jewell. I'll just have to keep the faith.
How is everyone else feeling about their teams chances for next season?

I reckon we can finish top 6 if Johnson does what we've paid him to and score a shit load of goals. We still need a tough tackling midfielder though and it looks like Yobo is on his way out so I can see us shipping a few goals as well. I reckon we will finish a respectable 8th.
Oh and Stu, dont fret. Jewell will pull something out of the hat. I cant think of anyone more equipped to deal with the situation at Wigan. Even if your squad is thining and most of your decent players leave, Im sure you can stay up with Jewell at the helm.

I think it could go either way for Everton. If the big money signings don't come off it could be a disaster, but then again if they do work out a top six finish is definitely possible.
I don't think there's any doubt that Chelsea will win the league again. They were quite simply awesome last season and will be better next season.
I'm alot more confident about Wigan's chances now than I was last night. It was just a momentary crisis. I'm sure there'll be at least 3 teams worse than us next season.

I'd say you need a creative one more. You haven't ever really had a truly gifted, skillfull, creative midfielder in your entire history have you?
Stu it isn;t looking good for you next season. Why do you think everyone wants out? Money?
Speaking of which, I can't believe Chelsea have paid us £12m for some Nigerian kid who's come from the lofty leagues of Norway. They really do have more money than sense. Not that it really matters to them I guess. They are still gonna win everything in sight next season.

Arteta has been doing most of the creating, and I think Shandy van der Meyde will start pitching in once he gets himself fit. We could do with a creative midfielder certainly but I think we need a ball winner more urgently, a midfield consisting of Arteta, Cahill, Osman, Van der Meyde looks good on paper but is pretty damn lightweight in practice. As for your comment about never having a gifted, skillfull, creative midfielder in our history...you couldn't be more wrong, we just haven't hade one for the past 15 years.

Okay, maybe theyre not up there with the likes of Best or Ronaldihno, but in their day, I think they were fairly highly regarded.
Oh and I almost forgot, what about Andrei Kanchelskis, who we signed from youse. Okay he was only good for one season, but he was definitely one of the most skillfull players i've ever seen at Goodison.

Well I can't really say. I don't know what's going on behind the scenes at the club and each player has his own reason. Bullard left apparently because he wanted to be closer to his family (but I've also read that he's getting nearly double wages that he was getting here). It certainly seems that it's all mainly about money, yes.
