Barry Bonds just tied Babe Ruth's HR record and I don't know how I feel about the whole thing.
It's pretty fucking hard to hit a HR in MLB. Even if you are taking steroids, coke, meth, or whatever. So, I have to say that the guy is pretty talented no matter what he was taking.
On the other hand, cheating is cheating. Couple that with Bonds being the all-time arrogant cunt that he is, I don't think he is gonna get all of the positive attention a player should get.
He has chosen to be rotten. He has chosen to cheat by taking steroids. But he still hit alot of homers. Any baseball fans out there? |

In my opinion, Barry Bonds prior to 2000 (or whenever it was than he began to expand) he was one of the greatest ballplayers ever. He had power, he had speed, he wouldn't swing at any junk just piling up the walks, and he was a great outfielder. I rooted for the guy. I argued with people who criticised him for being a punk. I thought we were lunky to get to watch him. I felt bad for him when they blew the World Series to the Angels.
Now, I hope his knee blows out in rundown. It would be a shame if Hank Aaron with his immense class lost his record to a cheater. |

Lots of neat stories about Hank Aaron out there. Too bad there were a few jerks that sent him hate mail way back then. But now, he is treated like royalty. As he should be for having such skill and class. So, at least Barry can't play the race card (he blames everybody else for everything- it wouldn't surprise me). It's all his doing.
I don't feel sorry for him, just sad about the hopeless situation he has made for baseball fans- and past and present players for that matter. Well, maybe I feel sorry for him a little- for making such terrible decisions with such a great opportunity to be the king of his sport for awhile. Damn!

Hank Aaron received numerous death threats in the mail when he was reaching Ruth's record.
I don't doubt racism or perceived racism has contributed to Barry Bonds' poor attitude. The Game of Shadows book claims Bonds was pissed about all the attention that McGwire was getting about hitting homeruns, when he Bonds was a better player, and he thought that racism was part of the reason why. But, I bet growing up with a superstar father and godfather contributed to his spoiled attitude. |

Whoa, broken, you're tarnishing your halo! But I agree in that all cheating diminishes the honorable, in the Greek sense of honor, as if there could be any other. So long as Barry's knees cause him to fall short of Aaron's mark, the harm is minimized, but it is ironic that another abomination, the designated hitter, could allow him to further encroach.
That said, ScottP's remark that "even if you are taking steroids, coke, meth, or whatever" resonates in that Mark McGwire, another of questionable chemistry, closed his 70 homerun season with two round-dingers in each of his last two games. A man doesn't do that by virtue of artificially enhanced musculature alone. He was manacing pitches, much as the presumably unenhanced Albert Pujols has been lately. Reminds me of a Tony Gwynn in his prime, who would in the eighth or ninth inning necessarily cleanly hit any pitch he could reach if the game required it, like a wizard, wand in hand.
Much as I too despise what Bonds apparently has become, I do agree with the comment of Mike Krukow, the Giants' gifted announcer, to the effect that it is unfair to expect Bonds to bear so much of the blame for the sins of an entire generation of baseball. Bend the twig and beget tree bent: baseball ignored its standards decades ago and today records need asterisks, an America enmeshed in a cold war backed a Shah and tomorrow we have a nuclear Iran, support a Ngo Dinh Diem and get a Ho Chi Minh, a corrupt Havana and a Castro, .... human nature, baseball or global politics. Look at your own lives: anybody surprised?

Yeaaaa! The Mets just defeated the Yankees, which is fun even if the only time I can support the Mets is when they play the Yanks or the even more loathsome Red Sox. Fenway always makes me think of fiddler crabs. All is right in the baseball universe, especially because the Cardinals are four up in the NL Central. When will baseball remember that dominating a 162 game regular season ought to count for something? Do wins in April and May equal those in August or not? Boycott a playoff system that permits a second place "loser" team to advance in the playoffs simply by winning three of five after a 162 game marathon.
Forget the Cards-Cubs rivalry, it's the Astros that rile, especially due to their flirtation with Clemons. Can there be anything more contemptible than a Texan who finds his fame in the Northeast? I don't think so.
edit: yes, I know, that makes me think George Bush too.

George Bush isn't a true Texan (born and educated in New Haven and afraid of horses).
"Fenway always makes me think of fiddler crabs." What does that mean? The Sox red hot. |

Some people say, "Just let them take all the steroids they want in every sport". I guess if you are willing to destroy yourself to be competitive enough to play in professional sports, why not?
I don't want to see this happen but I also don't have a very good argument against it either. |

Just a comparison between the extreme asymmetry in the claws of the male of the species and the equally extreme asymmetry of Fenway, what with the short left field and the Green Monster. I agree that my meaning wasn't obvious at all.

Even though the Cardinals (idle today after two out of three in SF, which, thanks to geography, I was able to get in Reno) are still only four up on Cincinnati, BUT now six and a half over the pretentiously named Astros, whom I would lord over as doomed to the dust they deserve were there actually any dust in the swamp some call Houston, and especially because Bonds remains the atrophied post-steriod ghost he is, the baseball world is still at peace.
“What a bargain: At a cost of a mere $100,000 or so, a northeastern college can take your child and transform him into a delicate flower incapable of handling opinions at odds with his own.” - Rich Lowry, National Review Online, May 23, 2006 |
