Dog Sleep is on the podcast. If Your Poison Gets You and Fitzgerald are on MySpace and more will be coming. So you can at least get started...

Mr. Tiven, your friend Al Franken would be very proud of your fair and balanced approach.
My biggest concern with the album at this point is disc 2's sonic disparity - the Honeycomb tracks stand out like a sore thumb. It almost sounds as if they were recorded at a lesser quality sonically than the rest of the album.
What has been the most pleasant surprise is the inclusion of a few songs that don't match the typical soul/country rock Nashville sound, like "Dog Sleep." It's a nice breath of fresh air.

The best (or most immediate) song is End Of The Summer, by a long way - I love the chord changes. Not so keen about some bits of My Terrible Ways: his voice really goes off-key in a couple of bits. |

If I had to pick a most immediate song, it would go to Johnny Barleycorn. Dog Sleep is (still) my favourite, and I really enjoy a lot of songs like When the Paint, End of Summer, and Golden Shore. Wanderlust has some strong and weak points and depending on my mood I either really enjoy or dislike it.

Where's the "In the Time of My Ruin" love? Honest to God, I'm quickly believing it's one of the best songs ever cut by anyone ever. Blows my mind every time.

So tell me, Tiven, last year it was wrong to talk about the album before the actual release date, but this year you open up a thread to discuss the record, one month before the release? So I guess it's ok to download it then?

I sanction downloading only if it prefaces a purchase.
You were all discussing this well before I stepped in, I just have a bone to pick with discussing the album under a thread started by a naybob of negativism who insists on the egocentric behavior of naming the thread after his personal disappointment. Many of the responders were not disappointed. And if you want to disagree with my thread topic, that is your prerogative. I just got bummed out looking at the other topic, and so here we are.
Dear Brian, I am considering hiring a team of mafiosi to kidnap you and hold you hostage in Minnesota for the next eight years so you can enjoy Senator Al Franken from a closer vantage point. Only your seeming enjoyment of FMRM is preventing me from implementing it. As for the inclusion of the HONEYCOMB outtakes, we did everything we could to make them sonically akin to the rest of the album, so would you prefer we left them off? I think not.
To the rest of you, thanks for participating.
bye for now, JT |

i'm looking forward to hearing FMRM, but, to be honest, not as much as i'm looking forward to the Frank / Eric Drew Feldman stuff that will (presumably) follow.
Dead Man's Curve and the Rabbit song sound better than any of the tracks i've heard from FM/RM

Consider. He listened to the album once. He felt disappointed and wanted to discuss. Seeing no similar threads of discussion, he started a thread for this topic. It so happened that most of the respondents either disagreed that the album was disappointing or indicated that they felt the same way and have come around in subsequent listens.
I'm not sure I understand your objection on these grounds. If anything, you shouldn't get bummed about the thread because people have come and said that they enjoy it. Now if the thread were entirely on topic and everyone said they too felt the album a disappointment, it might be more on topic, but I would assume less pleasant for you (though still an equally valid thread).
So I suppose, if I understand correctly, you'd like the thread renamed because most of the people who replied either felt disappointed but have come around or else enjoyed from the beginning and you feel that the thread that Foucalt's Dog created about his first listen doesn't represent everyone who has posted in the thread. But his post nor thread title need only represent his opinion, just as your thread represents yours. So long as there isn't a ream of duplicate threads for "love it" or "disappointing first listen" or "really a grower" or what have you, I guess I don't see the problem. I certainly wouldn't call it egocentric to start a thread with a title based on your personal opinion, even if every single person disagreed with you.
Do you disagree?

Downloaded the album two weeks ago, and had it running constantly ever since. So far I'd have to say its better than honeycomb for sure, especially Disc One which I reckon is infinitely better than Disc Two (and yes I've given them equal listening time). That said, there's already a handful of songs that get me reaching for the skip button (My Terrible Ways, Real El Rey, Holland Town, Sad Old World), and I agree with Broken Face, the Honeycomb leftovers sound pretty flat, even Where The Wind Is Going, but its still my favourite song from the original Honeycomb leaked songs.
My faves so far - If Your Poison Gets You, Fast Man, Wanderlust, Seven Days, End Of The Summer, Time Of My Ruin, Fitzgerald, Its Just Not Your Moment, Where The Wind Is Going and Don't Cry That Way.
I guess it suffers from the problems of any double album, but I guess if it was a 17 or 18 song masterpiece (which it could have been) we'd all be crying for the b-sides and saying how good they were when we got them. |

I pretty much share Eduardo's opinion. (except for disc 1 being better than disc 2. I'd say there are the same amount of gems and songs that I skip on each discs) |

Holland Town is one of my favorites. The only two that I'm not really into as of yet is "It's Just Not Your Moment" and "Kiss My Ring". The latter, because I feel the mix from the Honeycomb leak had a bit more,...how do you say, ooomph?

Excellence unbound indeed Mr.Tiven. After my estimated 10th listen i am really enjoying nearly every track on this album, i think Johnny Barleycorn is excellent and has the Blast off feel. I love alot of the other songs listed already but the ones that did not impress me much at first i'm really starting to enjoy such as, i'm not dead (i'm in pittsburgh), kiss my ring, down to you, fitgerald. I think this album is going to rank up there with TEENAGER, FB S/T, SMYT, BLD for me. |

Heard 7 songs, and it made me think I definitly prefer Frank with subbtle arrangements (from Feldman, Tiven, 2 pale boys...) than direct right in the face approach. More "cat" than "dog" if you see what I mean (I allways miss the ying/yang expression) So many people just come to ask "Hey, when is he going to scream again". Well, that ain't everybody. |

I've given it a few listens....the one I downloaded and burned from soulseek has better sound quality than Honeycomb (I hope the cd version I get when it comes out sounds the same).
...anyhow, I gave it a few listens and what can I say, even the less interesting songs, when sung by frank, sound good to me. It took me quite a few listens to get into Honeycomb, but I love it. After 2-3 listens of FMRM, I am already into it.
...by the way, good job MR.TIVEN!

so far a grower for me. mixed feelings when i first heard it. but been listening to it for a week and really starting to like it. 27 tracks of frank! that's frank supersized! i'm lovin in the time of my ruin. also, really like if your poison gets you, when the paint grows darker still, johnny barleycorn, dog sleep, dirty old town, and raiderman.
i saw the movie elizabethtown last week and in one of the tracks playing in the background the song mentioned john barleycorn. not sure what the song was though. kind of bluesy. another good frank song for the song database.
cool that frank's touring. interested to know if it will be solo or with a backing band.

I know I'm not alone in occasionally bemoaning the Nashville Frank (to the extent that that doesn't mischaracterize what he's been doing), but this morning I used my vehicular errands to revisit Honeycomb for the first time in about three weeks and it REALLY made me glad he's doing what he's doing. Bring on FMRM, and if the Feldman material rocks more, I guess we'll just have to live with it. :-D

I haven't heard it either... Apart from the few podcast/stream tracks.
The songs sound good, but frustrating as they are out of context with the rest of the album.
When I finally get a chance to share my thoughts on 19th June - you guys will probably be over FMRM and be talking about the FB/EDF record instead.
Anyway, I am very happy that the album is a double, but what are the thoughts on the original KG selections below for the single-disc version, would we have missed a gem or three?
1.If Your Poison Gets You 2.Johnny Barleycorn 3.Fast Man 4.You Can't Crucify Yourself 5.Dirty Old Town 6.Wanderlust 7.Seven Days 8.Raider Man 9.End of Summer 10.Dog Sleep 11.When The Paint Grows Darker Still 12.I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh) 13.Golden Shore
