I'll begin by mentioning what a great venue the Empress Ballroom is, even though I live about fifteen minutes down the road, I've never been to a gig there. It's very ornate inisde, lots of chandeliers and such, which makes a change from the usual square, purpose built venues.
Anyway, Willie Mason was supporting, and he was pretty boring in my opinion. Radiohead came on about half 8 and played a 2 hour set. I cant fault the band, the performance was flawless, but I have to say it was nowhere near as good as I had expected. It was the first time I'd seen Radiohead live, and they're one of my favourite bands, not to mention one of the most colossal and relevant alternative acts of the past 20 years. So maybe I had built it up too much. I think the crowd were partly responsible, this might sound ridiculous but even though I was quite close to the front, nobody seemed to be moving or singing along, they were just in quiet awe of the band. But Im used to being knocked about a bit and having the band drowned out by singing morons. Maybe it is bizarre for me to crave that, maybe I should have had a few more drinks and a couple more cigs. It just didn't 'feel' like I was at a gig.
Like I said, that wasn't the bands fault. They played an excellent set and loads of new material which sounded really promising. They played my own personal favourites Climbing up the Walls and Black Star. No Fake Plastic Trees though. Here's the full setlist:

'National Anthem'
'2+2=5'
'Bangers 'n' Mash'
'Lucky'
'Airbag'
'Bodysnatchers'
'15 Steps'
'Exit Music'
'Paranoid Android'
'Nude'
'Arpeggi'
'My Iron Lung'
'Where I End And You Begin'
'Climbing Up The Walls'
'How To Disappear Completely'
'Idioteque'
'There There'

Encore:

'Planet Telex'
'House Of Cards'
'Black Star'
'Everything In Its Right Place'

Second Encore:

'The Tourist'

Also, I just read that Thom Yorke is working on a solo album which could be interesting: http://www.nme.com/news/radiohead/23064

Lies, lies, lies, you do not lived fifteen minutes down the road.

You're right though, the Empress Ballroom is an excellent venue. I have fond memories of seeing The White Stripes there. Just a shame there is nowhere decent to go afterwards. Or before.

I suppose I have confused you a little with my constant references to going out in Manchester, which is where I am at Uni, but my actual 'home', so to speak, where my parents live, is blackpool. You are right about there being nowhere to go out in blackpool, the only 'alternative' club is The Tash which is a shit metal club full of 15 year olds in Limp bizkit hoodies. Everywhere else caters for the stag/hen night crowd and is thus a shithole full of scummers. I hate blackpool...the lingering threat of violece, the smell of death...its not a nice place.

Ps did you notice how the floor bounces in the ballroom? Cool eh?

Oh I hate you. they played my favourite album track and I hate you. Not as much as I hate Carolyn and her radiohead story but I still hate you.

Both times I've seen them it were awful and I just couldn't get tickets this time round.

What is your favourite album track?
Fancy giving me a quick summary of Carolyns Radiohead story?

Yeah it deos bounce doesn't it? The Ritz in Manchester is the same. Weird.

Blackpool used to have an indie club, quite a few years ago, but I don;t think it did very well so it shut down. It was on the front, I forget it's name.

They're playing "Black Star"?

No, really, they're playing "Black Star"?!

That's one of my favorite songs of all time. I never thought I might possibly be able to hear it live. Wow.

My dad tried getting tickets for the two of us last weekend, but since they sold out in half a blink he had no luck. So he gave in and paid a broker, and we're now seeing them on June 4th in Boston. It'll be my third time. Crap, now the "Black Star" suspense is going to drive me mad. Watch them play it the next night, instead.

I wouldn't dare, I'll try to find her post about it thuogh. I can give you a brief summary of the time I was in Oxford at the train station and my friend pointed at this bloke and mouthed "That's Thom Yorke" and I quite loudly said "That can't be Thom Yorke, that bloke's way too small" and the bloke stood next to me turned and scowled for he was actually Thom Yorke. Or the time I was in the fancy cheese shop in the covered market playing silly beggars with my ex and ran behind a display of posh crackers to hide from the ex, ran to hide and actually ran right into Colin Greenwood. He thought it was funny but I went quite red.

aaah, carolyns story goes like this:

Black Star is my favourite album track from them. Usually it is anyway.

My dad offered to buy me tickets to the Scotland and Dublin show but I've seen them in an arena and I've seen them outdoors to. I wanted to go to the wolverhampton gig despite the massive ticket price but they sold out super fast.

Gutted.

yeah, my sister tells a very similar story of seeing them at a small campus pub in new zealand during the bends tour and how she almost lost a couple fingers by trying to rip off thom's guitar strings while he was trying to play.

Seeing Radiohead in a tiny pub must have been a gig and a half!

Anyone fancy opening this up into a more general Radiohead discussion, and basically talk about how fucking badass they are, favourite albums/songs etc

Here's my two cents:

Favourite songs:
Climbing up the walls
Fake Plastic Trees
Black Star
Kid A
Pyramid Song

Albums (in order of how good they are):
1. Ok Computer
2. The Bends
3. Kid A
4. Amnesiac
5. Hail to the Thief
6. Pablo Honey

I remember listening to OK Computer for the first time lying on the back seat of a coach in Venice at night. It was pretty magical and mindblowing, and whatever anyone says about it being overrated is crap in my opinion. So that would be my fav.... closely followed by Kid A. The Bends is cool but can become tiresome, Pablo Honey is hit and miss. I will say that i think Amnesiac was shite aside from 3, maybe 4 songs. And hail to the thief had cool songs but didnt work too good as an album. That may sound quite negative, but i do love them still! Favourite songs is difficult, but off the top of my head-
The tourist, My iron lung, Kid A, idioteque, Pyramid song, 2+2=5.... you know what, theres shitloads.

It's hard to pick favourite tracks, some of my favourite tracks are b-sides so I'd go with

Black Star, Morning Bell, Permenant Daylight (My Iron Lung ep), Polyethylene* (Parts 1 & 2) (Paranoid android b side in the UK Karma police b side in france) and Let Down, ooh no maybe Lucky...

Albums, would go Kid A, OK Comupter, The Bends, Pablo Honey, HTTT and then amnesiac.

Maybe the bends tied with OK computer because I think whilst OK computer has some of the most outstanding tracks on it the bends is a more cohesive album.

this is hard.

I only have OK Computer, wasn't that interested in them before that, but some of there earlier songs are pretty good too. I keep seeing Kid A and Amnesiac going cheap, been thinking about checking them out. I like Pyramid Song.

Just noticed on their site Phil Selway's Mum died recently. They had to cancel a gig in Amsterdam.

!!!!

oh, yeah... i have this poster of thom yorke at home which i've had for ages and i think i got it with Q once. what's weird is that i never actually looked at it properly and just thought it would be a bit gay to have a poster of a guy who's smiling and looking sickly sweet (which he is, in the photo), so i put it in a drawer. then over easter i found it again and noticed his eye wasn't weird, so i decided to actually read the huge sign he was holding that had a list of all the things done to his photo to make him look nicer... make eyes look the same, perfect smile, glowing skin, etc. etc... now i think it's pretty cool. i forgot to bring it back with me. but yeah... i'm mentioning this now because i was trying to find it on teh internet yesterday but can't find it, anyone seen it before?

What I like about Tre is her steadfast defiance of the rules of punctuation, never at the expense of intelligibility, mind you. I know: punctuation is for toadies.

punctu-what-now?

Actually it doesn't bode well for the ebook does it? I can punctuate when I pay attention honestly! I had to sit a test for an editorial job recently and I got really good marks. Didn't get the job, but...

I was really pissed when my english teacher refused to tell me more about punctuation in english language.
she said "forget about it... it's totaly different from your mother tongue punctuation... just write short sentences..." I was like "Fuck! Off!"

National Anthem is the most impressive for me. I first heard it on my way home late one evening, not really listening and just changing channels and it immediately got my full attention (bar the road), the thick riff and later the cymbals pounding it in. I didn't know who it was at first and certainly wasn't expecting something like Radiohead on the national radio (though a fan since Pablo), turned out they were airing Kid A for the first time.

Yes I did. Sort of. I asked my friend and she text her sister who asked someone or other who is supposed to be a big frank black fan and i've never met the guy. Is that you? This might be a long shot, but are you Alan? If so, I've never met you, but have heard that you also cream your horn over the big man.

What does cowboy killer mean? I thought it was slang for cigarettes or native americans?
