With both equal amounts of joy and dismay that I came across news of GTA4 last night. To be released in October 2007. The joy: a next-gen GTA. The dismay: it will be multiplatform (PS3 and 360).
And this is the monumental problem facing GTA4.
It’s like this: People can love the 360 all they want, but the truth is that it’s specifications are significantly inferior. Despite the whole issue of the difference in power between the two consoles, the real problem is the discs they’ll be playing.
The discs used for the 360 hold 8.5gb
A dual layered blu-ray disc for PS3 holds anywhere between 50gb and 56gb.
Speculation ran that Rockstar would have released GTA4 only on PS3 due to the huge potential provide by the large storage space on blu-ray discs. But they haven’t.
Instead they have opted for the easy option. 360 owners will most likely receive GTA4 on a disc where 8.5gb of its 8.5gb will be used up. PS3 owners will be getting, basically, a 8.5gb dent in the blu-ray disc.
Rockstar would have one of the only developers with the potential to max out the disc with huge environments and interactivity on a much larger scale.
Don’t get me wrong, GTA4 will be a huge game. But it won’t be the game of endless possibilities that it would have been on a single platform release.
An example I heard a long time ago was this: “Imagine GTA4 on 56gb blu ray. Your looking at a street. On the street is 20 buildings you can enter 20. Inside you can freely walk around any part of that building.
Now imagine your on the same street on a 8.5gb disc used for the 360. There is still 20 buildings. But you can enter less than 5”
The world you’ll be playing in will be big. But not blu-ray big.
It also affects other things like: animation, models, game data, and the largest part, audio.
Multiplatforming wasn’t a problem in the last gen consoles. But there are big differences this time round.
It feels like for the next few years PS3 owners will have to drag the pain of the 360s shortcomings when it comes to multiplatform titles like GTA4. Despite people trying to completely avoid 360, it’ll still be getting in the way of true next-gen gaming.
Rockstar will still most likely give PS3 a slightly better game. Things that the 360 can’t offer such as: True HD (1080p hopefully), better frame rate, and better graphics.
The again Rockstar could just get lazy.

Personally, Unreal 2007 is looking better than HALO3. Check out the lighting and facial effescts in that second UR2007 pic. Awesome, fucking awesome.

I'm stiil waiting on Killzone for PS3 and Motorstorm. After all last years rumours it'll be interesting to see if it really was pre-rendered or real-time.

Yeah, never heard of Haze, either. Looks like a sequel to FarCry.
What's the deal with Mario Galaxy? Because if it's another in the Mario series (i.e. Mario/2/3/4/64 and not MarioKart/Tennis/Party/...) I'm going to have to buy a Wii anyway.

I think Mario Galaxy is a game based on the use of the the Wii's motion sensor controller

I came across a few pics of the PS3 version of Singstar. I have no interest in the karaoke sim, but, it seems you can download new songs to sing to for free when their made available. So even if a Pixies song or any Frank Black song doesn't come on the game disc. You could just download it.
