 The E3 conference runs from may 9th-11th and the Expo from 10th-12th. And what does that mean? This year should promise playable PS3 and possibly Wii (formerly the Revolution) games as well as the latest update on next-gen titles. With the video games industry making an estimated $25bn each year these become very important days for Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
What's your views? What are you looking forward to on show? Ever been to E3? You ever wonder why they try to sex up this show with tons of scantly clad ladies who never played video games in their life. Their just cock teasers for the viewers!

Anyway, expect Microsoft to be ranting on about how great HALO3 is, expect Nintendo to be getting more criticism for the name change as well as people waving "wands" like Harry Potter fanboys, And expect Sony to unveil more of its cell proceesor power. (Plus, Rockstar finally showing us GTA4 on PS3?... Hopefully)
All this sound too nerdy for you? Then maybe i should go sit on my couch and fiddle with my analog stick! {i know, that was the saddest joke of all time}

{i'll post more screenshots during the week}

*Just a note of interest*
These are price comparisons of the 360 and PS3. (apologies for the slightly crap scan quality)

(Scan was taken from issue 138 of Play) Note PS3 price may actually be lower than £400, as it is still to be offically anounced. But it won't be, as some people estimate, £800.

Yeah, the boomerang was just a prototype. The new controller has a motion sensor though. I'm sure Nintendo are pretty pissed that there only novelty for the Wii is a standard feature for PS3

I'm rooting for Nintendo in the whole console war thing, perhaps I'm alone, but I really despise Sony and I never was particularly enthralled at having Microsoft in the arena anyway.

No, you're not. Nintendo always has been (yes, still to this day) my favorite. Nintendo is to video games what The Beatles or Pixies are to rock music. |

Nintendo would have been the world leader in consoles if they hadn't become bitchy in the early 90's when thry backed out of their joint venture with sony. Nintendo and Sony were going to develop the "Playstation Extreme" together. But Nintendo said that the whole CD idea wouldn't catch on. How wrong they were. I too hate microsoft. How much money does Bill-fucking-Gates thinks he needs. The original Xbox cost him over $4bn in losses between 2000 and 2005. Of the 3 next-gen consoles Sony has created the most powerful, versatile, and frankly interesting one. It's predicted that during this generation of consoles, one manufacture of the three will most like fold and stop production (Like SEGA did after the Dreamcast) And with not even a scratch on Sony's sales, it's likely to be Microsoft or Nintendo. And i don't like Microsofts chance. Sensor technology looks to be a console must-have. And in comparison to E3 last year, the 360s technology seems to have already dated. If you want a good product, buy Japanese. If you want a good console, buy Sony.

I still prefer to play games on my PC anyway. I'm bored of consoles now. Only the portable ones hold any real interest as far as I am concerned.

One time i bought a PC at christmas. By april all the newly released games wouldn't work on it as it had been outdated. That's the problem with PCs, they have a 6 months life span, then you spend more money to upgrade.

s_wrenn, I'm so sick of that argument. If you're putting together a decent system, a PC (also my platform of choice) will run the latest games for a long time. If you buy a $500 piece of you-know-what from Futureshop/Best Buy/Staples/WalMart/whoever, you'll get what you pay for. Yes, you can buy a console for that, but that's all it is (though that will and is slowly changing).
I've had my machine for almost five years, and aside from spending $100 to double the RAM I had in there and another $100 (after trade) for a new video card, I can still run all of the latest games with a few options dialled down. Plus, you know, use it for all the other stuff I do. Sound editing/recording, web design, surfing, typing, graphics work, music, video editing, etc.
I also tend to think that there are, though a dying breed, still more interesting games for PC than what console players tend to get. Everything in the living room is converging (TV, stereo, VCR, ...) into a single entertainment unit, anyway; I have a feeling that dedicated gaming consoles will become a very rare and niche thing within ten years.

I know about crappy $500 PCs. But, when i bought that PC in christmas 2003 it cost €1599 ($2,039) and it was from the PCWorld. Not a crappy Tesco PC or something. It was a COMPAQ, not one of those brands you never hear of.

It's too bad you spent that kind of money, because those are precisely the types of computers I'm talking about... Compaq, HP, etc. The stuff they sell in large stores in large quantities with crappy components in them. Not meaning to offend, hopefully I'm not, but far and away most pre-made systems are very much guilty of using the cheapest components they can find and selling on the specs they know sell. A 4 GHz machine is garbage if the motherboard its on has a dime-store chipset. Or not enough RAM. Or decent amounts of RAM (since Joe average tends to know these days that more RAM is better) but maybe only PC2100 or slower. Or onboard video. Or sound. And a 5200 RPM hard drive with a 512kB cache.
I guess what I'm getting at is that those manufacturers aren't targetting people looking for performance and know what they're looking at. They put up the things they know people are going to consider in their comparisons. People look at the 4 GHz. They look at the size of the hard drive. The speed of the CD Burner. And maybe the amount of RAM. But there's sooooo much more to the story, that has so much bigger an impact on performance, that ALL of them, to be competitive with each other, skimp out on to increase profit.
You can't blame them. If I'm not going to sell any computers because I have what, to the average Joe, looks like the same system in all the things they know/care about, but mine is $200 more because there are quality components, well, I'm not going to be in business long. Or at least not competing for the mass market.
But I digress from the topic. I just hate seeing computers dumped on as a gaming platform for this perpetual '6 month' lifetime thing, which is less and less true anyway, but is generally coming from people buying the Compaqs, HPs, etc.

I know i got screwed with the PC at the time. But i'm not a total idiot average joe. I know exactly what to look for in a good PC. If i had more time and money, i'd be building my own instead of getting pre-made ones. But i don't.

The point i'm trying to make here is that consoles are dedicated games machines. They have a specific life span, usually 5 years, although the PSone lasted 8. PCs aren't built like that, even if you build one yourself. And in that life span no upgrades are needed. It's easier on the persons pocket.You don't have to build, you just have to play.

Oh yeah, I still play my Nintendo now and again. Of course, I still play old PC games, too.
As for lifespan, well, everything does as you say. Computers don't have a specific one, BUT I can still play old games on the same machine and I could upgrade too just like a console. It costs more, granted, but for all the extra stuff it does, well, I don't mind.
I was playing Day of the Tentacle recently, and now I'm working on Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis. Also just finished Psychonauts, which I loved.

 Any song, on any music cd ever made became a level. You just had to put in your cd! Classic!

It'll have a six axis sensory board. Meaning it'll be like the Wii wand (Revolution wand, Wii wand sounds so stupid. Why Nintedo? Why?). You'll be able to tilt the controller to move items on screen. The PS family logo button would presumably be like the "home" button on the PSP or the big X on the 360 controller. Also, from what i've heard. The vibration function has been done away with to save on wireless power (should you want to detach the usb cable) and so it won't interfear with the motion sensor.

My favourite kind of games are first person shooters, and PC's do them better than any games machine. So much easier to control.
