Last saturday I bought Jenny Lewis' "Rabbit Fur Coat". It's the solo album by Rilo Kiley's lead singer. I'm not familiar at all with Rilo Kiley's works but Rabbit Fur Coat is wonderful. It's, let's say, halfway between Loretta Lynn, Neko Case and Mazzy Star ("Happy" really sounds like a MS rarity), with great background vocals by the Watson Twins. Not as slick as "country" records sometimes are (if you see what I mean), it's nice but not bland. It kinds of reminds me of Honeycomb in the concept (solo alt. country/folk record... half of it was recorded in Portland by the way. Even the booklets are similar) but I think it's much better achieved. Really good stuff. I saw there was a Watson Twins album released recently too, I wonder what it sounds like. I know there are a couple of Rilo Kiley fans here, I strongly recommend this album to everyone. Feel free to express your opinion if you've heard it.

I, too, love the album. I even love the slightly goofy Traveling Wilburys cover, "Handle with Care" done with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service), M. Ward and Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes).
My only problem with the album is its lyrics - i think they seem pretty rushed and not very well thought out. I still enjoy the songs, but i wish the lyrical content was a bit better.

Yeah I've read things about the lyrics. But who cares, they're in english, I don't understand them.

No, really, everytime an album is dissed because of the lyrics, it's never a problem for me. On the opposite, I very rarely listen to stuff in French partly because of the lyrics.

aww, i like some of the lyrics. it just seems like she was trying to fit too many in each song. i saw her last month. the live show is really good, if not a little creepy. the watson twins seem to have choreographed their swaying movements. and i don't like having to sit in gigs, even if it is more 'intimate'. but i was at the front and cos i knew all the words i got a lot of eye contact with jenny & co. and i got her setlist! or should i say 'jennifer's' set list... |

It's easy to get spoiled by Charles' brilliant lyrics. |

I've always wondered why Frank seems to be relatively popular in France, when the lyrics are a significant part of his appeal to me. I don't that I'd be a fan of his if the words weren't (mostly) in my native language.
And so as not to derail this thread too much, I do intend to get this album at some point, but I want to get the other Rilo Kiley albums first. I've only heard one song from it, "Rise Up With Fists," but I think it's pretty cool.
"If you doze much longer, then life turns to dreaming. If you doze much longer, then dreams turn to nightmares." |
