I'm not sure if this has been done before, so if it is it can be closed.
Do you prefer the classic satire that South Park provides, or The non-stop gag factory that is Family Guy? And Why?
(I'm not including The Simpsons in this as the show hasn't been funny for a very log time. Plus, Futurama is way better than The Simpsons)

South Park every time! Family guy just isn't funny in my opinion. I've not seen much of Family Guy though so maybe I'm not one to judge.

Family Guy's humor is based all around the viewer being an astute pop-culture fan. The funny part is how they use things you already know and twist them. That isn't all that hard, or all that smart. The show is funny, but dumb.
South Park on the other hand is biting satire cranked out at an insane pace and who's episodes always have some sort of morality (ie. Mormons may have a bizarre set of beliefs, but they are peaceful and nice so leave them be), much like early Simpsons episodes did. South Park is funny and smart.
South Park wins.

I prefer Family Guy but I still love South Park. The Simpsons is closest to Family Guy for me (sometimes I think it's better, like yesterday).

I love both, Family Guy is stupid and random as fook, but sometimes that's all you want out of a cartoon. It's not nearly as lame as those 2 episodes of South Park make it out to be.

Agreed. I don't see how anyone could say it's better than the Simpsons. Futurama was just not funny. At all. |

Futurama was way funnier than the simpasons. Even that Ricky Gervais episode wasn't funny.

Man, that episode SUCKED. But it was written by Gervais, which makes sense since everything he touches turns to shit..reverse Midas syndrome..

I think he just ficked up that episode. I love the office, can't say it's shit. But recently i feel it's been out done by Peep Show. Even Gervais said that he thinks it's the funniest show on TV.

Well, I suppose his character was a bit too much of a Gervais cliche....but it was a pretty funny episode. Homer calling Lisa "TVisa" cracked me up.
South Park is a bit annoying sometimes, but it is funny. I don't watch it much. I used to think Family Guy was just a lame Simpsons rip-off, but that's quite funny too, although I don't watch that either. Futurama can be really funny and a bit so-so, although having said that I do have seasons 1+2 on DVD (I still haven't finished season 2, although I have it ages-same goes for the saeson 1 Simpsons DVD I have!!).

I think that around 1999, when Futurama started, i noticed The Simpsons getting less and less funny. I think Family Guy works with being a Simpsons rip off because they take some pretty funny risks. The Simpsons seem to comfortable in their mass franchised dynasty. South Park has never let me down. And it always amazes me that each episode could be ,made in 5 days compared to 6 months for a normal animation show.

Well, it is a simple aniamtion technique, which allows the m to make 'em so quickly. The Simpsons did go a bit wobbly a few years back, but it has managed to remain very funny more often than not.

Anyone ever see an animation show called Mission Hill. It got cancelled, but there was about 15 shows aired anyway. It was fairly good

South Park hasn't been made using the simple construction paper technique since the pilot, it's been done on computers ever since.

I really like SP and the Simpsons. But I think SP makes me laugh harder. It's nice now having a dvr so you can record it and then go back and watch what you were laughing over. |

I love Family Guy, I guess it's just the boorish American in me but by God I could watch a marathon of that show and never want to get up.
I usually change South Park when it comes on now. Looking back, I don't think I ever found it that funny, at least not laugh-out-loud funny, but it does sometimes have its moments.
I agree about the Simpsons has gone way downhill of late, and I don't know if it will recover. (Seems kind of hard now that it's on it's fifteenth or sixteenth season now, I believe...) I still watch it, though.
Futurama is pretty consistently funny.
Just gauging by my laugh-out-loud response, Family Guy wins by a landslide.

With the Simpsons signed on to air till 2008 and a movie coming out next year it doesn't look like we'll see the end of them just yet. Despite that crappness. South Park also recently signed a contract for more season till 2008.

I don't know if I want the end of the simpsons anytime soon. It's kind of a nostalgic holdover from my youth (the show came out when I was about 10). In a way its like the "Family Circus" in the newspaper. It's really not that funny but it's something you're just used to having there.

Haven't seen much South Park, in fact, I watched one episode, hated it, and haven't gone back. It was the pilot. But enough people love it that someday I may try again. The pilot, in my opinion, was crude in the extreme and very unfunny.
The Simpsons may have had some off years (I think they're back on track now) but has had plenty of good, smart, hilarious episodes that neither Family Guy nor Futurama, two shows I love, have touched. Family Guy has been hilarious, but is not often smart. Futurama is smart, AND funny, but I'd never call it hilarious.
So, my vote is The Simpsons even though I acknowledge it wasn't on the list in the first place...

South Park is actually laugh-out-loud funny once in a while, but I don't really associate South Park with being laugh-out-loud funny.
I associate it with having extremely, graphic unrestrained satire and social commentary on such topics as Christianity, Mormonism, teenage girls wanting to look like whores, AA, materialism, pointless teenage nihilism, blindness of censorship, conformity, and the general public's reaction to South Park. A lot of brilliant plot-writing that keeps the viewer in suspense makes it one of the greatest shows of all time. To be fair, though, there's a lot of unbelievably stupid stuff that can be, as Dean said, very crude. |

"Greatest shows of all time?"
South Park's deliverence in satiring all of the abovementioned topics has the class and wit of a sucker-punch to the face.
Honestly, I don't know what kind of "brilliant plot-writing" goes on during the making of South Park. Usually, the show seems to derive most of its material from being as crude and offensive as possible. (And I usually find crude and offensive funny...) Also, I don't know when I have ever been kept "in suspense" during an episode of South Park so it loses on that account, too.

They great thing about South Park is that they aren't afraid to make huge changes to their show without angrying the fanbase. Like the time Mr Garrison got a sex change. I can't think of any other show that would take a risk like that with a well loved character. I don't think the simpsons did anything like it (could be wrong though). The only thing i can really think of is Peter changing his job every once in a while on Family Guy. But it's not really the same.

I just bought the 4th Season of family guy and I have to say that I was a little dissapointed. It only raised a few laughs whereas the 3rd season had me almost peeing my pants. I think that in the 4th season they've taken the whole flashback/cutaway thing too far. They seemed to be happening constantly and going on for minutes on end, with barely any time given over to the actual plot. Did anyone else feel the same way?
As for South Park I think it used to right on the button but they should have stopped making it a long time ago. The same could be said for the Simpsons.

I got the slight feeling that they were trying to make up for the time the lost while they were off the air for a few years with strings of flashbacks constantly hitting you. But i still enjoyed the 4th season. What about the Stewie movie? What do people think of that?
