The Stewie Movie was hilarious, but it was just 3 episodes that were supposed to be in the 3rd season stuck together wasn't it? So it was bound to be funny.

It seems me and you are going to cross swords on quite a few issues tonight!
The first two are of the same quality as the rest, so if you liked them, you would probably like the whole season. I like flashbacks as much as the next guy, but I just think that if they are going to be funny they should be used sparsely.

South Park. The episode where Cartman tries to get Family Guy pulled from the airwaves really points out some of the flaws in the writing and humor of Family Guy.

Cartoon Wars part 1 and 2 used Family Guy as a way to test the limits of South Parks power with Comedy Central as well as satirising the whole Muhommad cartoon fiasco.
They did give a few digs at Family Guy, but they also made jokes on South Park itself:
"I really don't want to see Family Guy go off the air. I love that show...I mean i know it's just joke after joke, but i like that. At least it doesn't get all preachy and up it's own ass with messages, you know?"

I've barely ever watched South Park, so I can't really offer an opinion on it. But I HAVE watched a lot of the other animated shows mentioned here, so here are a few thoughts.
Family Guy: Yeah, it does seem like they're packing every episode with flashbacks and such, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, because these are usually really funny even when the main plot is fairly lousy. I constantly see people mentioning that it hasn't been as good since the hiatus, but I can't say I agree. If nothing else, the FCC episode was one of the best ever.
The Simpsons: This will probably always be my favorite, despite the fact that I usually laugh much less often at the new episodes than I do at FG episodes. I mean, hey, I grew up with it! And while I don't think it's as consistenly good as it was back in the day, it's better than it was during the years when Mike Scully was show runner. I think one thing the recent writers have been doing well is getting the family dynamic back into it. The fact that FG isn't as concerned with this kind of thing lets them get away with some hilarious jokes that wouldn't work on The Simpsons, but The Simpsons has more heart. I think they both have their place. And I liked the Ricky Gervais episode (although the ending was kind abrupt), but I've never seen anything else he's written.
Futurama: I love this show, but I guess it has less appeal to the public at large. It was basically a show made by nerds for nerds. That's not to say that The Simpsons and FG also have a lot of nerd appeal, or that Futurama didn't do plenty of more general jokes, but I get the impression that you have to have a certain amount of tolerance for science fiction and other geeky stuff to really appreciate Futurama. (That's not to say it's necessarily a SMARTER show, just a GEEKIER show.)
American Dad: Yeah, it's sort of a self-rip-off on Seth MacFarlane's part, but I think they're making an effort to give it its own flavor. It's definitely been improving with the more recent episodes.
So, basically, I guess I like pretty much everything. :P

I like them both, but if they were both on at the same time, I'd watch "Family Guy" because I know, no matter what, even if it's a rerun, it'll be funny. I laughed out loud three times during the Poltergeist episode a couple weeks ago and I almost never do that when I'm watching TV.
Plus it's hard to watch a show where they're always trying to make a point about something, even when ( and mostly I do ) agree with them.
I like the fact that they can make the episodes so quickly and have them relate to what's going on in the news, but there's something I don't like about persuasion. I think anybody who actually changes the way they think about an issue after watching a half-hour TV show ( or even a movie ) is, and I hate to say this about anybody, an idiot. And not just an idiot- they're someone who doesn't give any thought to the way things should be.
This is off-subject but I'll give an example: cops.
Of all the jobs in the world, being a cop is one that requires an extremely strong sense of morality and justice. And anyone who had a strong sense of morality or justice would be unable to allow himself to be a cop right now. This country's drug laws are immoral and unjust. Most cops never give any thought to the idea that people have a right to their own body and their property- they never consider the injustice of forcing a person to spend years locked away from their family and friends just for possessing or selling certain substances.
Most cops don't care about the ideals of liberty. Some have the same image of cops that they had as children- policemen being heroic protecters- and they never consider whether the laws they enforce are fair or not.
Many more of them just consider it a smart career move. Maybe they don't want to wait to take the postal exam again, or they only have a GED and want a job with good benefits and they just married some girl they knocked up and need a job that isn't through a temp service ( these are some of the reasons that I've heard from people I've worked with who were aspiring to be cops ).
With the exception of small-town cops who don't do much besides help little kids cross the street, no one with any sense of justice, no one who had actually thought about what being a cop means, would ever be a cop.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone return with 2 live action films: THE ALL-AMERICAN and GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Count me as a giant fan of Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I'm totally stoked for the 10th season of South Park. When I heard the titles of the next two live-action films from Trey and Matt I immediatly got a big smile on my face. THE ALL-AMERICAN and, especially, GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN!
The more I heard about the films, the more I kind of scratch my head. GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN, a film that will combine live-action with "man in suit" action, is apparently going to be made with Nickelodeon films, which leads me to make the assumption that it'll be a family friendly film. Which is just bizarre. What would a Trey Parker and Matt Stone family comedy look like?
THE ALL-AMERICAN is a high school comedy and will be up first. Parker will direct both features and Stone produce. They will both collaborate with the screenwriters of each project for the final draft (Jeff Roda scripted ALL-AMERICAN and JF Lawton (PRETTY WOMAN and UNDER SIEGE) scripted GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN!).
Both aren't the obvious choices for Parker and Stone, so either there is a typo in the announcements or they've decided to try their hand at something a little different. I'm all for them toning it down with a couple films as long as they still deliver my crude humor every Wednesday night!!! |

'Family Guy' meets 'Star Wars'
Toon kicking off season with approved spoof

The Force is with "Family Guy."
Fox's animated hit will kick off its fifth season this September with an hourlong episode that retells the "Star Wars" saga using "Family Guy" characters.
Lucasfilm has blessed the event, which will have the Griffin family acting out all the key scenes and narrative from "Star Wars: A New Hope," the first installment of the franchise. "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane is a major "Star Wars" fan and was personally involved in getting Lucasfilm on board, an exec from 20th Century Fox TV said.
Not surprisingly, family patriarch Peter Griffin will play the role of Han Solo, while mom Lois will appear as Princess Leia. Evil baby Stewie will be Darth Vader, natch.
Brian the family dog will serve as Chewbaca, while son Chris is Luke. Robots R2-D2 and C-3PO will be handled by Cleveland and Quagmire, respectively, while creepy old guy Herbert gets the Obi- Wan character.
Plot of the episode has the Griffin family stuck at home during a blackout. With no TV to entertain them, Peter decides to tell a story --- leading to the "Star Wars" flashback.
Planning for the seg began more than a year ago, with the "Family Guy" execs getting Lucasfilm on board. MacFarlane is set to show off footage from the episode at this weekend's Star Wars mega-convention in Los Angeles.
MacFarlane and the "Family Guy" writers have shown a strong interest in "Star Wars," serving up several mini-spoofs of the franchise in years past.
In addition to the "Star Wars" tribute, "Family Guy" will also mark its 100th episode next season, with a two-part special set to air in November.

MONTREAL -- The team behind Fox's hit animated show "Family Guy" has been looking at possibly working on a "Family Guy" movie down the line, creator Seth MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter here Saturday. He also said Fox comedy "The Winner," on which he serves as an executive producer, may not be dead yet after new developments in recent weeks.
"It is looking like there could be a future life for 'The Winner.' I hope it pans out," MacFarlane said, without providing specifics. "We have been trying to figure out how to do that and the series at the same time without the series suffering," he said about a potential "Family Guy" feature, adding that this is a challenge that also caused the "Simpsons" film to come about so late.
One possible solution, according to MacFarlane, is to have Ricky Blitt, the creator of "Winner" and a longtime ex-writer for "Family Guy" who has since moved on to other work, start on the movie script.
However, he emphasized that he had no plot ideas yet, and Fox studio executives would have to sign off on a film project as well. "Nothing is official," he said, adding that if all things come together, a movie could be ready in a couple of years.
MacFarlane also said he would like to find a small story about the Griffin family that can be explored in a feature-length film. "I don't want to do 'The Griffins must save the world,' " he said. Asked if the success of the "Simpsons" movie would affect his interest in a big-screen version of "Family Guy," MacFarlane said no, predicting that "Simpsons" will make good money. "But it will be interesting to see if it works," he added.
MacFarlane talked to The Hollywood Reporter after a press conference with many of his "Family Guy" colleagues here. They are in town for some "Family Guy Live" readings as part of the Just for Laughs comedy festival.
Asked in the press conference about some Sept. 11 and terrorism jokes on "Family Guy" and how difficult it is to pull them off, MacFarlane said he feels enough time has passed for comedians to slowly explore the issue carefully.
"People are sort of trepidatiously dipping their toe in it," with skits on "Saturday Night Live" and the like, he said. Asked about gags that never made the air, MacFarlane said the team once had a Last Supper scene written. In it, when Jesus tells his disciples to drink the wine for it is his blood, "there is this huge comedy spit thing" that ensues, he said.
The "Family Guy" team didn't discuss in detail any other new projects they are looking at, but Alex Borstein said "some of us are developing some TV stuff." Mike Henry has been producing weekly videos for KickedInTheNuts.com, which he runs with his brother. Joked Seth Green: "I'm starting an online casino to get kids and their families together and make money for myself." |

Simpsons season 9 onwards isn't worth my breath. Before that it was and I'm sure will be the greatest animated show/comedy of all time.
Family guy is an odd one, although I have seen them all, I find watching it on my own is not as funny (like anything) and they went a bit overboard with the familyguyism's in the 4th season as mentioned above.
I kinda stopped watching South Park after the 4th or 5th series when they moved it all over the place in this country. I'm gonna go for Family Guy over Southpark I think, but I agree with the general consensus that it is a little dumb and Southpark has become a well written and amusing cartoon. For those who found it crude in the beginning should perhaps try a couple of the newer episodes. Avoid the episode in which they decide to eat through their ass and shit out their mouth, perhaps.

'Family Guy': I need a lawyer

A publishing company that owns the rights to "When You Wish Upon a Star" filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday in New York against Fox and the producers and creator of "Family Guy" over an episode they claim infringes on the rights of the classic tune.
The lawsuit filed by Bourne claims that the ditty, "I Need a Jew" -- sung by the show's patriarch, Peter Griffin, in the episode "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" -- is a "thinly veiled copy" of the song made famous in Disney's 1940 classic "Pinocchio."
Griffin sings the song in a elaborate musical production after deciding he needs to hire a Jew to handle his money.
The episode was set to air in 2000 but wasn't broadcast until 2003, when it was shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The defendants include creator Seth MacFarlane, the show's composer Walter Murphy, Fuzzy Door Prods. and Cartoon Network.
"If you listen to the structure of the lyrics, the song, the name of the episode and how (Peter's) singing out the window to the stars, there's no question they were using the song," Bourne's attorney Paul Fakler said.
Said Fox TV: "We have not yet seen the complaint and have no comment at this time."
Comedian Carol Burnett filed suit this year after "Family Guy" lampooned her in an episode. That lawsuit was dismissed. |
