Today Rush Limbaugh turned himself into police custody on a charge of witholding infornmation to fraudulently obtain prescription painkillers.
I agree with him on a lot of issues, and I enjoy the same drugs that he does, but I'm very disappointed in him.
Back when he had a TV show he said, "...if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up".
He's probably changed his mind since then, but I haven't him heard him come out and say that the drug laws need to be repealed. He was in treatment for 5 weeks back in 2003, which he mentioned when he came back to the radio, but as far as I know he hasn't directly acknowledged his drug use. He has an opportunity to stand up and defend drug users and he hasn't done it.
Of course I'd forgive him if I met him and he said he'd share some with me. That OxyContin is a lot of fun ( even better is another group of pills by the same company, Purdue Frederick- MS Contin, morphine sulphate Contin; I used to get the 200mg pills from a friend ).
By the way, it seems Rush took a tip from Trent Lott- he's smiling in his mug shot picture- it looks just like a normal snapshot so it'll be harder for people to use against him.

Tom DeLay, rather than Trent Lott.

I think being a radio talk show host must be one of the hardest jobs in the world.
You've got to talk for 3 hours everyday, and keep people interested, plus people will jump all over you if you make a factual error ( I'm sure there are entire websites dedicated to catching his mistakes ), and if it's a call-in show you have to be ready to debate anyone.
I can see why he turned to drugs. If I had his job I'd be doped up all the time too.

Yes, Rush is quite a guy to handle such a hard job.

Hosting a radio call-in show is full of pressure: there can't be any "dead air" so you have to keep talking all the time. I don't think that Rush has a lot to fear from the people who call in to his show; I hate to call certain people "stupid", it's too easy to dismiss people that way, but I have to say that the majority of callers on his show, no matter how well-informed or well-read they might be, come off sounding simple-minded.
Here in New England, we have "The Howie Carr Show" which follows Rush's show. The host writes a column for the Boston Herald and just published a book about gangster Whitey Bulger and his brother, former-UMass president James Bulger, called "The Brothers Bulger". You might've seen him on "60 Minutes" a few weeks ago.
Carr is a conservative too, but his show is a thousand times better than Rush's and the people who call in are a lot smarter. Carr does an excellent job of keeping the show interesting and dealing with the callers.
It's a hard job and I know I'd have trouble doing 10 minutes of radio, never mind 3 hours.

They are lemmings who are spoon-fed propaganda by their pill-addicted idol.
P.S. Carr's a boob.

I must say that I've not been impressed by talk show callers of any ideological stripe. I now consider that C-Span morning show, which I used to check out most weekday mornings, to be unwatchable. And if the rightwing has it lemmings, the leftwing has its clones. As the song "For What It's Worth" goes: [they] mostly say 'hurray for our side'. |

In most issues I disagree w/ Dr. Laura and Al Franken, but I wouldn't dismiss them or their fans as stupid. Actually, they're smart people who happen to be mistaken about a lot of things.
People believe what they believe and it's a waste of time to try to change their minds.
If I was in charge of the country, my plan would be to leave people alone. People could do just about anything they wanted: do drugs, have abortions, have 3 kids with 3 different guys before they turned 20; they just wouldn't have the government to take care of them, pay their rent or their medical bills.
Even if my belief are wrong, at least I wouldn't be infringing on people's rights or property. ( About a month ago on this forum, someone suggested that everyone should be forced to "do a stint" in a third world country to "find out what's really important". It seems like everybody has an idea on how to improve things and it always involves forcing people to give up their rights: anti-abortion, anti-smoking, anti-WalMart, single payer health care, mandatory military service ).

Oh, Kathryn, I didn't get it at first. I was sensing a little hostility in your last few posts and it all seemed out of proportion.
But now I see. You're not mad about Rush- you've had a crush on me all this time. Up until now I was your dream man, but now your heart is broken because I've turned out to be on the capitalist side.
This is a lot like that movie "You've Got Mail". If you haven't seen it, don't bother. Take my word for it- it's just like the movie.
Kathryn, don't worry, I'm still the same jimmy you've come to know and love. Don't let a few political differences keep us apart. Politics and radio talk shows don't matter- what matters is that you love me, now and forever. Goodnight, my sweet Rose of Tralee. Love, your snuggle bunny, jimmy
