those stories scare me. I hope nothing like that ever happens to me.
I don't let these things get personal- I might tailgait someone who's going slow in the fast lane for 5 minutes, but once they finally pull over, it's over ( if they happen to flip me off, sure, I'll flash them a smile, but that's it)
People are crazy nowadays. And a surprising amount of people drive with guns. It's not worth it to get involved.
Giving the middle finger is lame and useless, and I don't honk out of anger (only if someone is backing up and doesn't see me, or something like that )

We also would fill Christmas ornaments up with water and throw them at the traffic. It was terrible. Things got really bad when we got bb guns. Sometimes cops would spot us and try to get us, but there were so many houses on this hill they couldn't tell where the stuff was being launched/hurled/shot from, and we would camoflage ourselves. i once gave the finger to the wrong guy (though he deserved it). he litereally chased me all over town and i started getting freaked out, wondering what the fuck he was going to do if he actually caught me. finally i pulled into this gas station and managed to maneuver through some cars and get away (he couldn't fit because he had this huge bronco).
nothing like having some raving lunatic redneck guy chase after you to liven up the day

Once friends and I threw eggs from our car at an unknown girl's car (I was 15 or 16) which then resulted in their boyfriends chasing us for maybe a hour. One of the highlights of the chase was coming to a turn and half of us yelling go straight and half of us yelling turn right. The result is that we missed the turn and ended up in someone's yard right between two pretty big trees. We then backed out and had fucked up steering. The chase then proceeded to an extended affair with us driving out in country to another town and turning around in drive through bank lane and driving back toward our town. Finally, we stopped and got out. We out numbered them 5 to 3 and they backed down. Ended up they thought we had run into the girl's car.
My favorite yearly activity was July 4 roman candles. We would hide out on golf courses and out in country fields and shot fireworks (bottle rockets and roman candles) at passing cars. Really pretty stupid and dangerous, but it was fun at the time. One year this ended with police cars chasing us across the golf course. Fortunately none of us got caught. If we had, there would have been hell to pay since my best friend's dad was the chief of police. Another year ended with a car getting pelted with fireworks but then a grassfire broke out. We were left the delimma of running from the car and letting the fire build or facing the consequences and putting the fire out. We put the fire out and managed to get away (or maybe they let us off, I can't remember). |

I heard George Carlin say it, (I think I quoted it in another thread) and I think it sums things up pretty well: (this is not a direct quote, just a paraphrase)

Now the one thing that drivers do that gives me road rage is when they ride my bumper. I can't stand that. I want a bumper sticker that says:
"I brake for tail gaiters"
O this morning I was in the left lane passing another vehicle (and yes i was going to get over whenever i got past the car) and this car comes up behind me riding my bumper. She was so close to my car, I could not see until I was able to get over into the right lane and she passed me that she had her hazard lights on. My question is can anyone have the right to go speeding down the highway as long as they have their hazard lights flashing? (It was Toyota Corolla and there was no other flashing lights)

They also have the ability to pull alongside you at traffic lights, bang on your window and hurl abuse!

One thing I cannot stand... When I'm at a stop sign waiting to turn right...I can't turn until the car coming from my left goes past...then he suddenly turns onto the road where I am waiting and never uses a turn signal.
I HATE THAT!!

This morning a young kid (looked like a high schooler) pulled out of a store without even a glance in my direction. Thankfully I was paying close attention and slammed on the brakes and laid on the horn. So, today I don't like drivers who don't look before pulling out.

Other drivers don't bother me as much with the things they do. To be honest the only thing that really bothers me now is:
It'll be midnight, no one on the road except for one other car coming the other way, and it always happens that the exact moment we pass each other theres a pothole or something on my side of the road but since theres that other car I can't really swerve to avoid it... or... I'll go visit my parents, who live on a quiet sidestreet that has probably 10 cars go down it all day, but the exact moment I'm backing out of the driveway they'll be a car coming and I've gotta wait. That makes me so angry |

Tailgaters are the absolute WORST - and they are EVERYWHERE!!!
I usually drive about 10 mph over the speed limit. Guess what - that makes me just about the slowest grandpa out there. I never ever clog up the left hand lane. I despise tailgaters and so I make every effort to get out of people's way when they come up behind me.
still - going 10 mph over and making every effort to make way - You're still going to get about 10 tailgaters on any given trip down the freeway.
I just can't get inside their heads. Some people's whole strategy to driving is to drive up two inches away from the car in front of him until he moves, then on to the next one until he moves, and then again and again and again
MORONS!!! he's in such a damn hurry that he's willing to risk everybody's lives
I get behind people all the time that I think are going too slow. It happens continuously. But my reaction has never been to try to see how close I can get to the guy to try to pressure him off the road.
this is how teenagers drive. And some people just never grow up |

Tailgaters piss me off too, but I have no better fun than slowing down to snail pace with a smile in my rear view mirror. I have a friend who's a bit loco, and anybody up his backside (leave it!) gets one rude awakening when he stops his car in the middle of the road and gets out to have a word with bumper hugger. It's the last thing they expect. As his passenger, it's both funny and cringe worthy. |

Yeah, I don't know if stopping is going to end well. Tailgaters are scum and idiots and I would guess often gun owners.
I use to hit the brakes, but I now prefer having them trying to pass on the left but then speeding up to trap them in the slow lane. |

I've only ever experienced the stop and confront technique a few times, and once it ended up in a slanging match between the two drivers which, again, I found funny but then pointless as we were blocking a busy road for what? Small Man Syndrome, that's what.
I don't know of any official figures, but as a regular on our busy Motorway 6, tailgating is one dangerous game to be playing. 20 mph over the limit is still not fast enough for some. |

"drivers you HATE, HAAAAAATE"
yes, I do.
-bicyclist
Just kidding, I don't hate. But I get pretty frustrated with drivers who risk my life to gain a few measly seconds, only to have me pass them at the next traffic jam.
I don't like to have to listen to fat people complain about being fat, or about bicyclists riding in "their" lane, when the solution to all their problems (being fat, anger at the healthy bicyclists, their planet about to self-destruct to bow out of hosting humans any longer) is to just ride a bike themselves.
Or when cool guys share some hard thought utterance from the safety of the passing vehicle.

This is what my 11 year old suggests that I do when coming up behind a person driving slow. I hate talegaters so I don't do it myself.
Once when a woman was talegating, I slammed on the brakes. It pissed her off and she was shouting at me (from the inside of her car, like I could really hear her) and giving me the finger. I thought it was funny. She thought she would piss me off more by inching closer, but I just slammed on the brakes again. When she finally got passed me I just laughed at her. This has been several years ago. My son was with me and I was taking him to school and when the lady passed me, my son was embarrassed b/c it was a friend of his and his mother. He was scared she was gonna beat me up or something when I got him to the school.
This was not one of my greatest mom moments, but I thought about it later and decided that probably was not the maturest behavior for my son to witness.
BUT IT SURE FELT GOOD.

People who open their doors without making sure nothing is coming past! Nearly hit someone (and their door) yesterday when driving back, didn't really know much about it as I was passing a big line of parked cars, suddenly a door opened in my path, came pretty close!

What I hate is getting behind drivers taking up both fast and slow lanes that refuse to pass the police officer that is leading the pack. What makes me mad is the speed limit is 45 and the police officer is doing 40. I think they do it on purpose just because they know people won't pass them and they think its funny. Surely I am not the only one who has experienced this.

I have a State Trooper friend. Recently, I was driving and got behind a Trooper vehicle and didn't want to pass. There were several other cars behind me. Well, it was actually my Trooper friend and he recognized me. He stuck his arm out the window and waved me around so I sped up and passed him. No other cars did. They must've thought I was crazy! It was pretty funny!

Very rarely do I follow another car closely- I'd like to, but it's just not safe.
Whenever I hear people complain about tailgaiters, though, I can't help thinking that they deserve it. If you find that other cars are following you too closely, on a regular basis, it's probably something you're doing wrong.
It's not just driving too slow- sometimes drivers are just generally slow: slow going when the light turns green, slow starting up again after traffic resumes, ect.

Wanna know which driver I HAAAAAATE? It's the old lady who, instead of slowing down, came to a complete STOP in the middle of the highway when she saw a child near the road. I crashed into her. Don't Get Me Wrong, I know you have to be careful when you see a child near the road but come on!!! I got a ticket for following too closely and I had to go to court yesterday.
