I find that I haven't heard many of the originals for songs that FB tends to cover, but those that I have, I generally like FB's cover even better than the original. That may be wrong, but I generally hear FB's cover first and seek the original. There are obviously exceptions, but when I think about it, pretty much all of the exceptions I like the original better than Frank's version (though I still love FB's version).

ANYway, so many of these songs I've not heard on Snake Oil even though the covers themselves are old favourites. The exception is I'm Going Down, which I've never liked as much as the original or even remotely as much. You guys? Any comparisons/contrasts? I've just been listening to this and One More Road quite a bit lately.

It's not on Snake Oil but Frank's version of This is where I belong has much more energy than the original which makes it better in my book.

I'm still debating whether the James Carr or Percy Sledge version is better (I think I prefer Sledge), but I'm sure their Dark End Of The Street's are better than FB's.

Most definately, Cheeseman. Personally, I wouldn't have let Frank's version leave the studio.

Brian might kill me but I prefer Frank's This Is Where I Belong to the original. I love Ray Davies but Frank's got a nicer voice.

I actually about equally enjoy FB's two Kinks covers (This Is Where... and Better Things) and their originals. I usually defer to the original if its close simply because if they had not written it, there'd be no cover.

I believe FB was listening to/familiar with the Gram Parsons' version of Dark End Of The Street as root inspiration. Not that it really has anything to do with Percy Sledge v James Carr, but anyway I thought it was relevant to point that out...

Really? I haven't heard those versions but I quite like FB's version. I knew that Simon didn't like it already, but I guess I'm less picky on singing than I thought.

I just was re-watching Goodfellas when the original of Atlantis came on as joe pesci was angrily wacking frank vincent ("now go get your fuckin shine box"), and as Scorsese is wont to do, it really laid an interesting texture on the scene - anyway, I had never heard it before (except when I saw goodfellas before) and thought it was excellent, though I am in love with Franks (seemingly very faithful) cover.

There's nothing there for me to grab onto, nothing that reminds me why I love Frank Black's music. I really like All Around The World, I'd rather it been included, instead.

Bear in mind I think Living On Soul should never have been a b-side, so what do I know.

(Hang On To Your Ego. Now that was a cover)

"I'm Goin' Down" is just about equal to me. I heard Frank's first, and eventually downloaded a copy of Springsteen's, and found myself surprisingly enjoying it(*). It's probably one of my favorite songs of all time now.

* I don't know...I don't have anything against Springsteen the guy, but attempts to get into his catalog just didn't hit me the right way. Born to Run bored me to tears. But "I'm Goin' Down" kind of opened a door. Just another helpful service done by Frank...
