Sad. Actually, I don't know. Never really listened to them one way or the other. All I know is that someone needs to stop the senseless violence against fruits and vegetables.

If they can produce a work on par with their early to mid-90's work, then great. And by that, I don't mean it has to sound like it, but have the conviction and passion and blah blah blah. Actually, I don't think I can get into anything Billy does from here on out. I'm not 16 anymore.

No new Pixies album. A new Smashing Pumpkins album. Great.

Billy Corgan is a genius in his own right. It's kind of sad to see that people generally disregard his songwriting since the early 1990's. Not unlike Frank Black, he has simply refined his style. He was heavily inspired by The Pixies, and in turn has inspired many musicians. The intro and outtro to Los Angeles by F.B. sound an awful lot like Smashing Pumpkins. It is very possible that Frank has taken a cue or two from Billy. I highly reccommend that any skeptics listen to Siamese Dream, which is in my opinion, a perfect album from beginning to end.

The rumours of them reforming seemed to cool lately, so I thought perhaps it wasn't going to happen. I reserve judgement for now.

MUSIC -- Smashing Pumpkin picking
By CARYN ROUSSEAU Published Friday, April 28, 2006
The message came cryptically and quietly on SmashingPumpkins.com: "It's official, the Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 2000. No release date has yet been set, but the band plans to begin recording this summer."
The questions quickly started flying: Will Billy Corgan, along with drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, bassist D'Arcy Wretzky and guitarist James Iha resurrect the Smashing Pumpkins in all its former glory? Or will there be replacements for any of the original members? Will Corgan try to control everything as usual? Or will it be a Pixies moment?
The Smashing Pumpkins earned a place in Windy City rock history as multi-platinum hometown heroes. They're loved (and hated) in this "city by the lake," as Corgan lovingly called Chicago on 1995's epic album "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness." The band started here and broke up here, too.
asap tracked down members of Chicago's rock 'n' roll establishment -- critics, writers, club owners, label owners -- and asked, "What will the new Smashing Pumpkins album sound like?" The response? A little bit ouch, a lot depressing and with a slight dash of optimism.
___
"It'll sound like a Billy Corgan solo record with Jimmy Chamberlin drumming on it."
-- Greg Kot, the Chicago Tribune's music critic.
___
"I predict a 'back to basics' record that will attempt to recreate the sound that originally made them popular. Unfortunately, that's the template that most bands usually follow when they reunite and record a new album. So I expect to hear something that sounds like "Siamese Dream": shoegazy and grungy, with big, radio-ready hooks. But it won't take many risks, and it won't be very interesting. The Smashing Pumpkins became more experimental later in their career, and simultaneously less popular. I think Billy Corgan will try desperately to regain the level of fame he once enjoyed, and I think, like most comeback attempts, it will fail. Miserably.
Of course, I hope to be pleasantly surprised by an engaging and successful album. But the cynic in me has watched this happen too many times to honestly predict otherwise."
-- Amy Phillips, news editor at Chicago-based music Web site Pitchforkmedia.com.
___
"It'll sound like Billy masturbating himself to his third consecutive critical and commercial solo flop, is what'll sound like. Are you kidding me? Smashing Pumpkins was a band with James, D'Arcy, Jimmy and Billy -- and that was a long, long, long time ago. Had a couple of good tunes once ... that was about it. Whatever THIS current lineup of Zwan is, it ain't Smashing Pumpkins."
-- Mike Po, whose now defunct indie Chicago label Limited Potential helped launch the Smashing Pumpkins.
___
"I think that the band has evolved from every record. I think it was an evolution of their sound. I expect it to be not a formula sound. It will have a contemporary feel to it, what an almost new band will sound like because it's sort of still being led by Billy Corgan, because it's going to have his stamp of melody and heaviness. But it's going to have an edge to it. Basically Jimmy did a kind of prog-rock record as a solo record so his jazz and rock sort of fusiony drum playing has stayed intact. And Billy went and did a personal electronic record. So I think the two of them together, they're going to go back to their sound. The sound they branded in the '90s. And it's a deep history of great heavy melodic rock material."
-- Joe Shanahan, owner of the rock venue Metro Chicago, where the Smashing Pumpkins played their last show in December 2000.
___
"After making such a fuss about this, he's going to have to come with the goods; despite his track record of hits, after the final-few Pumpkins albums and tepid reception of the Zwan album (err, not to mention his poetry book), he has something to prove again: that he's still got it." -- Chicago-based rock writer Jessica Hopper, whose work has appeared in Spin magazine and The Village Voice.

Thanks for putting this article up, Carl. I'm looking forward to a new album, regardless of what critics say. Who else BUT Billy can run the Pumpkins' machine? D'arcy? Iha? LOL. If he was not such a control freak, the music would suffer.

I dunno. I always had a like for the Pumpkins. ADORE is my favorite SP album, I think it's quite beautiful. The fact they are such a harmless band makes new material by them so non-menacing. Let them make one. Who gives a fuck?

Siamese Dream has a firm hold on my heart, considering its release coincided with my newfound interest in music, and it's all-around brilliance. However, I think the b-sides album Pisces Iscariot has to be my favorite. Any of you out there who haven't heard it should look it up. Splendid. Absolutely splendid.

I have Siva and Siamese Dream, but haven't given SD that many listens, although it surely deserves a few more....but Siva, I've always loved. My brother has it on vinyl, which is how I first heard it, and it truly rocks in a beautiful way.

Trick or Treat?
Contributed by BARRY BRECHEISEN
So it’s October and that makes me think of Halloween and when I think of Halloween I think of witches, ghosts, trick or treat and of course pumpkins. Speaking of pumpkins, what’s going on with the whole Smashing Pumpkins reunion?"
It’s been over a year now since Billy Corgan announced to the world that he wanted to “renew and revive the Smashing Pumpkins.” The Tribune article was a great teaser that has yet to deliver. Don’t get me wrong I know the rumors are true and in fact he’s in the studio right now in L.A. However I guess the bigger questions is not if but why if it’s just him and Jimmy Chamberlin representing the “New” Smashing Pumpkins?
I know it would be great to hear all of those great tunes again that he hasn’t played live since Decenber 2nd of 2000 when the Pumpkins officially broke up at Chicago’s Metro. Blah blah blah. But why not play those songs anyway as Billy Corgan, Zwan or whatever you want to become next? Does it really feel right without James Iha and D’arcy back in the fold as well? Not to me.
One of the things that made the Pixies reunion work so well and not turn into Frank Black’s Pixies was the simple fact it was the Pixies. When you looked on stage it wasn’t just Frank in the spotlight it was also Kim Deal smiling back at you puffing a cigarette and it was Joey Santiago with a little less hair on guitar backed by magic lover David Lovering hiding in the shadows on drums. Of course it’s the music but it’s also the people that you grew up with connected to those songs as well that makes the band, isn’t it?
I recently watched the Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits Video Collection and it brought me back to the decade of the 1990’s. A decade that was a total mess for me but the music was so fucking great. One of those bands was the Pumpkins with songs like the beautiful “Drown” from the Singles soundtrack to the perfection of pop with “Today”. Billy and the band delivered a perfect amount of distortion along with thought provoking lyrics that helped me to get through that difficult time in my life. Billy might have been behind most of it in the studio if not all of it but it was everyone else that helped to make it work live.
So in closing if you say things like "I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams" then really mean it. While all of the original members are still alive and kicking shouldn't you do it the right way or not at all? I know you were the genius behind the Pumpkins there’s no question in my mind, all I’m saying is the sum of the parts equal the whole. Without that all you have is the Smashing Pumpkins in name only with two original members.

Great article, thanks Carl! I agree with that point of vue, but I'm almost sure that in Corgan's mind, Smashing Pumpkins is more a concept or a state of mind, whatever you'll call it, that necessarily all the original members, even if that, indeed, counts a lot.
By the way, there's a new design now on the official site, still quite empty. |

Jimmy's Love Letters
Greetings from Pumpkinland! Sorry it's taken so long to write! I'm here to tell you that great things are on track for the future. As some of you know we are indeed creating music again. Music that comes from a place so pure it will burn the lies off the very souls of those who try to discount it. We have arrived at a place in our lives where truth and honesty prevail and we are creating from that place. I will try to keep these love letters short and frequent as we welcome you back to a place that rocks! Love JC

Jimmy's Love Letters .2
Greetings and salutations! Its been a hectic week for JC as we have been tracking drums non stop. Things are sounding fantastic. Tracking drums is a bit like going to another planet for four or five or nine minutes. We recently finished up working with Roy Thomas Baker, (Queen, The Cars!), Working with RTB was not only an honor, but also one of the best musical experiences we have ever had. We are currently working with Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden!) and that is going great as well. The universe has a way of letting you know that things are right by introducing people like RTB and Terry into the fold. It..s all part of one big cosmic journey, in so that everyone reading this is hitching their silver chord to the Great Pumpkin Space Train! Hope this helps clear some things up for you. Don't forget to cast your eyes skyward this weekend.... You may see a shooting star. Love JC

Jimmy's Love Letters .3
Greetings! Just a quick note to say that things are still in orbit around Planet Pumpkin. Almost finished with drums and then we're cutting BC loose to work his magic. Its great to see a bit of light at the end of a long musical tunnel. I definitely feel proud and privileged to be a part of this journey. I hope you are ready........... We are! JC

Jimmy's Love Letters .4 Catégorie : Music
Hello again my friends. I hope this finds all of you well! We have been working day and night in the studio and I am happy to say that the drums are finished! After almost a year of work, to finally sit down and listen to the drum takes, one after another, was a truly joyful experience. I can honestly say that this has been one of the most musically satisfying and spiritually rewarding trips I have ever been on. And what a long strange trip it's been! Our music has pulled us ever closer to the Heart and the Heart is beating true. We are moving closer to the light now, so about halfway there. I hope you can join us 'O Children of the Sun' Love, JC
p.s. We would like to thank The Grateful Dead, Rush, Billy Thorpe for their guidance in this hour of need.

Jimmy's Love Letters .5 Catégorie : Music
Hello all! A quick update. We are moving along nicely in the studio. BC pulled off a magnificent guitar symphony last night and it is still ringing in my ears this morning. Eight guitars resonating in one big harmonic handshake! And the drums...........of course! Yes, things are sounding great my friends. Today we will be working on vocals and solos, tomorrow, who knows. We are channelers. Sonic students.
Thanks to everyone who has sent in artwork. You are brilliant! Love, jc.
