I was gonna add this to the "I hate" thread, but in an effort to stop all "lists" threads, I thought I'd make a new one instead.
So it seems the latest idea record companies got to make more dough is to sell every fucking new album with a "bonus DVD". Sometimes you get the choice between the CD alone or the "special limited collector edition" with, oh joy!, a bonus DVD. And sometimes you just can't choose and have to buy a record 2 or 3 € more than the regular price because it has half an hour of random footage, "behind the scenes", "making-of", "watch your fave singer look all cool in the studio while the epileptic sound engineer is filming with his crappy camcorder". I hate that. I buy CDs for the music, for fuck's sake. Most of the time I don't want to waste time sitting in front of my tv watching that stuff (which is why I never buy dvds). I just don't like watching music on tv, especially when the content is worthless, which is the case in 90% of the "bonus DVDs". I have a couple of these at home and I have never seen any of them. I usually put them in the dvd player, see there's nothing in there and put the CD on instead.
Anyway. That was today's rant. Anyone care to share his/her opinion?

i generally agree with you denis. however i can think of one very recent example where a bonus dvd was so fucking good i had to buy the album a second time just to get the dvd.* mostly, yes, they're rubbish which no-one really wants to see at all, but the band for some reason think people might be interested in. if i watch one of these all the way through once, i'm amazed. normally it's turned off after 15mins. 15mins of which i felt was wasted. a recent example of this was the bonus dvd for mogwai's mr beast album. i am a HUGE mogwai fan, but watched the bonus dvd, which was a 'making of' one once, and will never look at it again.
*the example i was referring too is for the Dirty Three album, Ocean Songs. originally released in 1998, they re-released it this year with a bonus dvd of them performing for state TV here in australia. truly one of the most amazing performances ever recorded to film (and a decent 60mins too). so i've actually now got 3 copies of this album cause they also released in some other country with a bonus cd. but it is an album you can never have too many copies of. |

"Making of" documentaries are usually pretty boring, I'll give you that - but as benji pointed out, a filmed live performance can be well worth the extra cash. Some would argue that it should be possible to purchase it separately, but on the other hand, it's cheaper as a bonus disc...
What about DVDs that come with bonus CDs? Not a joke, I own one ("Viva Joe Strummer"). The "bonus audio CD" features... an audio version of the interviews featured on the DVD. WTF?

I have only ever watched one of those bonus DVD's and that was after owning the album for ages and just sticking it on because I was bored.

I got a bonus Seinfeld DVD with "extra unused standup material" but all it was was a bunch of ads for different boxsets. No sign of Seinfeld even. Damn Futureshop!

Most of the time I really like to see in the studio footage. To be honest, cause I want to see what gear they use

The worst bonus DVD ever is from the Jeff Buckley Live at Sine record. It is a total waste of plastic.

The Midnight Cowboy bonus dvd is really good. But as homer said, I watch them when really bored. |

Come on Brian, worse than a 'bonus disc' of commercials that flagrantly lies about its content on the cover?!?! Not that it matters I guess since it was a freebie, but the bastards still tricked me into putting it in my dvd player.

I, Dean, unlike you, was sticking to the original topic, which was bonus DVDs that come packaged with CDs.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But if it's a favorite band, I wouldn't really complain. But it's still a scam, really.

DVDs are no more of a scam than the age old Best of albums with the one new track or live performance.
Veering off topic: Can any reissue match Pavement's reissues which packed with new material (or at least new to a casual fan like me) and low priced? |

i was a little disappointed with the GOODBURGER bonus DVD. it would have been great to have a behind-the-scenes documentary or something. something that captures the inspiration and imagination that went into that film. you have to wonder, how did they even come up with that idea?

floop, I think they probably thought that GOODBURGER was such a good film that it doesn't need those kind of extras. The imagination is evident in the film already. The pure comedy genius of the film is enough to stand up on it's own without some crappy second-rate extras.
[EDIT] - And HPM, if you're thinking that the recepie for Ed's sauce should be included then I agree.

I have fallen for the 'bonus' dvd thing a few times. I usually regret the extra cost upon watching the dvd. I do enjoy an enhanced cd, such as the Pixies b-sides, however.
