YOU SKIP FAZER EYES? Boy, what a miserable life you must live. How the hell can you keep breathing without Fazer Eyes' spectacular end solo?

Yeah, the FE solo should be celebrated as the 8th wonder of the world and taught in every guitar school between Mercury and Pluto.

Wow. That post has to be one of the most offensive I've ever read! :)
Anything on Teenager? Blocks of songs on Pistolero. To me if you're skipping blocks you probably have to listen to that part of the disc more. Yellow album? Psh.
In seriousness though, I'll concur that I only occasionally listen to Blast Off and even less often to 1826. I know a lot of people don't like the Black Riders, but I enjoy them a lot. Just fun little diddys.

It always amazes me how many people criticize Blast Off and 1826. "Oh yeah, I love Frank Black and rock and roll but when he gives me the best 3-guitars solos that ever graced the surface of this planet I skip them." Have you all been brainwashed or what?

The problem with 1826 is not the 3-guitar solos, it's the 4 minutes before them...

crikey, quite the offense has been created.
to be honest. the early frank records were a disappointment to me (this is coming from a being a pixies fan and then having frank black come along). i listen to alot of live recordings from the 1993/4 era and enjoy them alot more than the yellow album. the production on that just doesn't sit well with me. and i think that the first 11 songs on teenager of the year + a couple of the 2nd half would make quite possibly the best album ever released (they released a promo album for teenager, which was called 'selections from teenager' - the tracklist (11 tracks i believe) on that is awesome from memory), but the way it is, i perceive alot of the 2nd half as letdowns after the 1st half and filler, which i despise.....
but i was probly a little harsh on fb+tc's. i honestly haven't listened to that album in entirety for atleast a couple of years, cause when it came out i was terribly dissappointed with it. however, most of the songs popped up on a frank black music marathon i was having today and they have certainly heightened my interest....so i'm definitely going to rediscoved that album. but once again, i thought the production detracted from the songs on that album. don't get me wrong, i love the 'live-to-2-track' thing, but i just don't think it worked on their first attempt.
it's bizarre seeing me saying that i skip so many on pistolero, which i think of as one of my favourite frank records. the tracks from 1 thru to so hard to make things out are phenomenal, but i feel it loses it's flow with 85 weeks, and i struggle to regain interest until so.bay comes on.
and for blast off. for me personally, the opening 3 seconds of a song are crucial to the listening pleasure i get out of a song. if the first few seconds annoy me, pretty much the rest of the song is ruined. i know thats stupid, but thats how i feel. and blast off fits into that category. i often feel i should edit my version so it starts differently, cause i think i'd then have a totally different view of the song. i feel the same about serene on limbo by the throwing muses - great song, but opening 2 seconds grates me, so song ruined. i just can't get over it.
here's the selections from teenager cd i was talking about.

I've never liked 1826 but Blast Off is fucking fantastic. The shortest 7-minute song of all time!
No offense intended benji, but I'm still having a hard time thinking about skipping the last five tracks of Teenager. They are five of the most essential Frank tracks of them all. If I had to, I'd happily ditch all my Pixies records forever to keep those five.

no worries. am just a believer of 'you don't have to like all songs to be a fan' which i know some people don't consider because they like ALL the songs. example - i am a huge huge mogwai fan, however they also have for me the worst song ever written. it's called 'with portfolio' and it grates my ears like nothing on this planet. can honestly say i haven't listened to that song in 6-7 years, and i know that no revisiting it will ever change my opinion. just fucking horrible.
but this thread has made me revisit many frank albums i haven't listened to for a while, which is proving quite the revelation.
and BLT, i agree that after the start, blast off is incredible, but the start just ruins it for me. |

This is back a bit, but I find Silver is very important to my experience of Doolittle as an album. Kim's willingess to keep sparse and peculiar just slots in wonderfully before the short-and-sweet-ish Gouge Away. It gives this wonderful change of texture, of pace and of just general feel. It's almost like a tension and resolution.
You're Such a Wire, not a super dooper song, its pretty good except the backing vocal in the chorus is terrible and this pops up in a few songs. Pitch is one of the few things im not willing to compromise when listening to 'raw' music that I suppose is produced through live recordings. I don't skip tracks because I find something interesting in all of them. I'm sure Frank could put out 'perfect' songs all the time, however hes playing what he wants at the time, without too much developing and changing, which is why he's so great.
Personally, I find his Pixies work more appealing than his later work, simply because that's the sound that I seem to naturally crave, and it's the most original sounding stuff i've heard.

Darwin, I disagree. There are far too few greater than signs in that post. In my opinion they're not even comparable. :)
Sorry Houston.
I'll second your disbelief at All My Ghosts if it makes you feel better.

I'm not a huge fan of most of the early Pistolero tracks, excluding "Western Star." They're not bad, but they're all kind of similar, and they don't really show off how interesting Frank can be.
I have to agree that "1826" isn't a particularly good song, and not just because of the guitar solo. Honestly, though, I don't like extended guitar solos much. I LOVE "Blast Off," though. Possibly the best opening album track EVER. And I usually don't like it when albums start with long songs, so that's saying something. It doesn't feel anywhere near as long as it actually is.
"Jane, The Queen Of Love" is overrated, but it's not bad. As for "Fazer Eyes," I think it's my least favorite TotY track, but that's like saying someone's the world's tallest midget (apologies to TMBG).
I might skip some of these songs if they come up when I'm listening to music randomly, but I have to REALLY hate a song to skip it when I'm listening to an album in its proper sequence, and no Frank songs fall into that category. If I set out to listen to BLD, I'm jolly well going to listen to BLD, not BLD minus two or three tracks that I don't like quite as much. Besides, sometimes a song will grow on me, and I'd never know it if I skipped it every time.
