just floating an idea to see if anyone's interested. it's a take off of the much loved cd swap phenomenon... instead of doing a full cd, how about we set up a song swap instead.
ok, here's the idea. you get 5 minutes, and 1 artist and you choose what song (or songs if you can fit more than 1) in those 5 minutes and you can upload it to rapidshare.de or yousendit.com (rapidshare probly better cause more people can download it and it stays up for longer) for other people in the game to download and then review. we'd set it up so there was a roster, and have a period of time between each subsequent persons go so everyone's 5 minutes get a decent listen too and sinking-in period. i'd say 1 or 2 days would be long enuf - leaning towards 2 for those who don't check forum every day.
i'm floating this idea cause my attention span is too short for a full cd at once, and thought doing it song by song would make it easier and more varied because more people could get a go more often.
so what do people think? important rules: 1 artist only 5 minutes of music max must adhere to roster - do jumping queue.
and it'd have to be either mp3 or wma files - too many people have roblems with itunes files for eg to use them....
i'm ready to go first if people are interested. if so, i'll start as soon as we have some kind of list of participants going....
edit: ok, list is: 1. benji 2. ObfuscateByWill 3. Crispy Water 4. kathryn 5. Homers_pet_monkey 6. Broken Face 7. Apesy 8. Llamadance 9. jediroller 10. remig 11. vilainde
days up - i'm about to post my 5 mins worth. people can join whenever they want too. but in 2 days time, ObfuscateByWill can upload his track.

Yeah, that last one turned me on to an album that has become one of my favourites of all time. I'm definitely in for another.

The band i have chosen is called Die! Die! Die! - they are a 3-piece from my home country, New Zealand. I would describe them as melodic noise. but have a listen for yourself. I have included 2 songs in my 5 mins. the first one is called 'ashtray! ashtray!', while the 2nd is 'franz (17 die! die! die! fans can't be wrong)' i can only postulate that the 2nd song is inspired by a gig they played at franz jozef, which is a small town on the west coast of the south island, nz, to which 17 people turned up.
These guys have released 1 ep and 1 album in nz and australia. the album, which is self titled, is a thunderous 10 tracks in 22 minutes, and is just the bees knees. it was recorded by steve albini, who i think did a fantastic job, the first decent engineering effort of his i've heard in a while.
they have a website - http://www.diediedie.net which has nothing on it. they also have a myspace webpage which has got more songs and actual info. http://www.myspace.com/diediedienz
well, hope you enjoy the tracks, and please, let us all know what you think. http://rapidshare.de/files/18212583/Die_Die_Die_.zip.html

thanks benji. It doesn't matter what I do with rapidshare, different browsers and everything, it just never works.

go the spurs!!!!!
the list of who goes next is in the first post, and it's a new person every 2 days. obviously the tracks'll be available more a month (if rapidshare used) so hopefully that'll give everyone plenty of time.

rapidshare hosts the files longer, but is not as user friendly to use as yousendit. you have to click on the "free" button and then wait 30 seconds until you can actually click on the link to download. but once done once, easy peasy. |

comment at will mr roller. yeah, i envisaged this as a more of the comment based game than just a download and listen and then forget. because you've only got 1 (or 2) songs to deal with instead of a whole album of new material, i thought people would find it easier to stay interested. and comments help maintain that interest. i sure am excited to see how everyone else utilises their 5 mins, and intend on commenting about everyones songs, and hope to get atleast a couple of bands i'm going to check out more.

I got through YouSendIt in the end. The other site was a pain in the ass.
Anywho, I liked them both. Definite Fugazi fans. Reminded me a little of At The Drive-In and, probably more-so, Snow White in parts too. So all good for me.

I used Yousentit, too.

HPM hit it on the head. Fugazi, ATDI ...Dismemberment Plan or early Unrest.
It certainly sounds like they're familiar with both Factory and Dischord's catalog.

Enjoyed. Thanks.

Not fond of it, IMHO it lacks melody. Must be cool to see them live (lot of energy) but I woudn't buy their record. |

I like "Franz" a bit more than "Ashtray! Ashtray!" Yeah, Fugazi/Dismemberment Plan influences are strong here. Pretty good stuff, all in all.

well it's ObfuscateByWill's go whenever he's ready.
and cheers for the comments. i agree, nothing groundbreaking here, but it is a truly great record. and one that demands to be played at extreme volumes. and it's ifficult choosing songs. these one's aren't my favourites, i picked 'em cause they seemed the most representative.
anyways, check out their myspace page cause there's 3 more tracks up there for those interested. and with my 2 plus the 3 on myspace, thats half the album.....

It took a few listens to grow on me, but I quite like Ashtray! Ashtray! - and like Homers said, very ATD-I. Anything I've tried to listen to by Fugazi I've never got into, so can't make that comparison. The second track, Franz, just kind of washes over me really. Good to listen to though, thanks Benji.

Arthur Russell - Home Away From Home
Lovely. Arthur Russell had something of a nasal voice ala Kermit the Frog.

I think he has a great voice. It reminds me a little of the lead singer from The National, and the song itself reminds me vaguely at times of The Hidden Cameras and someone else but I am not sure who. I like it though, it has an unusual structure and I like the use of cello and double bass (I think both are used)? There's a really nice atmosphere created, something I really admire in an artist(s).

Re: Die! Die! Die! - I'm usually not a big fan of this sort of voice, but this works for me (I like "Franz" more than "Ashtray" though). Good fun, begging for loudness.
I quite like the band's name too.

re: arthur russell. i really enjoyed this track. i liked alot the double bass & cello. his voice reminded me of not-as-deep nick cave. i can imagine myself sitting out on the deck with the late afternoon sun streaming into my face with a glass of nice sauvignon blanc listening to this. |

Arthur russell: nice, but not my favorite kind of music.I imagine people dressed in expensive suits with strange hair dressing in an art gallery, and they sip some strange coktails (champagne, rapsberry and oyster juice). |
