For those who are interested: The first 2 of, hopefully, a long series of 50 Foot Wave shows are now up at the archive.org Live Music Archive. (Thanks to Martin van Rappard who taped & shared these - where would we be without them Dutch boys?)
Kristin Hersh solo and Throwing Muses gigs should follow!
If anybody here can contribute by the way, go on, it's easy!

yeah, great martin (of pixieslive.com fame for those who don't know) and jedi. if you've ever wondered what an instrumental version of 50 foot wave'd sound like, nab the zwolle show - the house vocals are so low, almost can't tell kristin's singing at all.

I seem to have two shows - I guess from Dime - 14/6/2005 at Mercury Lounge and 9/9/2005 at Manium Warehouse.
Thanks for that jedi.
As an aside, I've been listening to Golden Ocean a lot recently, and it sounds even better than it did last year.

yeah, i think jedi is just trying to track down the tapers to ask their permission to archive.org them. but the mercury lounge show is especially excellent.

I've had no luck seeing them. First time I was going to see them was with the Pixies, but we wound up missing their set because we were backstage (yeah, I'm not complaining). It sounded like a tidal wave of bass through those walls.
So then, I found out they were playing when I was in Lisbon, so I went to the show and got there and paid quite a bit to get in and then I find that it was just Kristen Hersh. They'd had something with the band not making it overseas or something and so it was solo. I never would've gone had I known, so it's probably good that I didn't because I was really impressed by her. That said, I've since tried to listen to Throwing Muses and 50' Wave on CD and can't get into either. But Kristen was magical that night.

Have you listened to "Limbo" (1995) or the second self-titled TM album (2003)?

Breakin' my heart Dean,
I adore Kristin. If she was solo she probably played lot's of here solo records. My favourites are: Hips and Makers, Sunny Border Blue, and Skymotel.

Frog, I think I listened to House Tornado and then whatever their 50' Wave record is called. The way she sings just got to me and the 50' Wave stuff I remember as being amelodic. Sorry K. :(

Well amigo, to say the truth, "House Tornado" doesn't do much to me.
"The Real Ramona" is probably the easiest TM album to get into, but I personally prefer its followers, by far.

Ditto. "Sunny Border Blue" is certainly one of the 5-or-10-Albums-I'd-Bring-With-Me-To-A-Desert-Island.

I think I'd go for Limbo (TM) and The Grotto (KH) but Sunny Border Blue would be next.

Yes! Those are perfect! TM didn't hit the 'this band is the best ever'-button until I heard that one! Personally, I don't think The Grotto is that amazing, but it's still good.

well i'd start with university for the muses and definitely hips and makers from kristin. sure, the grotto has got imho, her best song, vitamins v, overall, hips and makers is hard to beat as one of the best albums ever released.
or alternatively, in a doghouse for the muses. disc 1 preferentially. fantastic.

It's a really tough one: I'd second Hips & Makers for K solo, it's just so all around amazing, never a duff moment. Plus, Me & My Charms, Beestung and Velvet Days are up there as my favourite. Sunny Border Blue is also excellent, but overall I prefer the totally acoustic sound. See if you can track down the Strings EP as well...
For Throwing Muses, I'm still discovering. Real Ramona has a lot going for it and is very diverse, whereas Limbo is more straightahead rock (if TM ever did such a thing). That said, Limbo is such high class, it's probably my favourite Muses album.
If I'm right here, Kristin's coming to the end of recording a new solo album so fingers crossed for more shows. Both gigs I've been to were wonderful: she's so entertaining and accommodating and sweet with all her stories and everything, and hearing her voice in that setting is just astonishing. It's so emotive, it's unbelievable.

Yeah I really love all the Kristin and Throwing Muses and 50 ft Wave records. It's the same with her as with Frank Black.

Just want to comment to include myself among those who love Kristin in all her incarnations. For TM, the first album is great, as are Real Ramona, University, & Limbo. And solo, Hips, Sunny Border Blue, Strings, .... I guess I favor whichever Kristen I'm listening to at the moment, so I'm not much help. I've only been in Ms. Hersh's presence once (50 Foot Wave) and it was a fine, loud show. |

Found Limbo, no dice on Sunny Border Blue but I'll keep looking. Haven't had time to listen, Greek easter this weekend and all.

Some great songs on the first album: Hate My Way and Vicky's Box are classics, and Delicate Cutters is maybe my favourite Muses song. See if you can look out a live album for Delicate Cutters as well, it really comes into it's own.
