I've been debating among my various personalities on these massive "list" threads and their contribution to the forum, positive or negative.
I've come to the opinion that their impact on the forum is ultimately negative. First of all, many of these threads contain posts that in themselves could and should be topics. Particularly threads like "What are you listening to/last CD you bought/etc". They are cool ideas in theory, but what I observe to happen there is that it becomes people just listing their latest purchase and no real conversation related to the posts. Sometimes you'll get people chiming in that they like/want to buy/etc that album, but otherwise, very little going on.
My preference would be to have people who really are enjoying an album they picked up or an album they've loved forever, or something that is on their mind that they feel worthy of sharing with others to do so and start a thread on it. As examples.
Feel free to offer your own perspective... I'm contemplating deleting or actually, better still, locking the ones that are deterents to starting independant and worthwhile threads. That way you can still go back and read if you like and I can unlock them after a while if it seems to be a mistake. But I don't think so. I can't be the only one who couldn't be arsed to participate in/read these monstrously large threads.
Obviously if massive public opinion is in favour of leaving as is, I will reluctantly do so.

lock them, lock them, lock them!
I honestly think that these threads go on too long and you're exactly right in that they contain nothing often but statement rather than discussion. They're intimidatingly huge and impersonal. Let me lock one go on please! please! (if popular opinion votes that way of course.)
please!
- I tried doing that once, making every minute count. It gave me a headache.

lock 'em. The forum has slowed up a lot and I'm convinced those threads have much to do with it.

Um, the reason I'm asking for public opinion is because that is what will decide.

Why not. I say try it. If it can help boost forum life, great. And if it doesn't, I don't think we'll miss these threads that much anyway.

if you lock the "topics you were going to start but didn't" thread we'll have no choice but to start a topic for each of the unstarted topics.
do you really want that?

That topic started off great, but just became conversations between forum members that happened to be in speech marks. |

IMHO only the total losers will complain if those threads are locked. Lock 'em all and let's find out who cares.

Yeah I say lock them. Some of them were good for a while, but they are all pretty dead now.
EDIT: Oh but I would keep/start one though where people can babble because otherwise we may just get too many shitty topics flooding the place. I'd prefer to, and have other people, babble on about nothing important in a single thread rather than starting one to do it. I mean there is no point in someone starting a 'I Like Cheese On Toast' thread.

I'm not really bothered which threads get deleted or locked or whatever but I was just wondering if the 'Whatever Happened To Pong?' section of the forum will still be here. After all, if threads are being deleted due to lack of discussion then most of the threads in that section should go shouldn't they?
And I agree with HPM about having one thread where people can babble. Y'know, for stuff not really worthy of its own topic but still worth mentioning.

hmm. i don't really think the fact you like cheese on toast is worth mentioning. unless you made it a thread devoted to cheese on toast, ways the make it, and so on. innit.

I don't really see where the problem is with the long threads. I read some (new CDs, upcoming concerts, and a few others) and avoid the ones who don't interest me that much (drinks, what are you listening to, etc...). I'm sure that other people have other preferences and there is constant posting going on in those threads. So why lock them? Where is the harm? |

i don't usually eat cheese on toast, but maybe i'll give it a try. lately i've been buying this English Muffin Bread. it's like regular bread, only made out of english muffin dough. good stuff. i would almost say it's as good as sourdough, which is my favorite

I agree with Dean: it's pretty rare that people care enough about what other people have posted (say, in the what are you listening to one) to respond, and the only reason people keep checking is to see if anyone's replied to them. They could do with pruning, I would say. Obviously, you can't insist that people justify every post in detail, but it does get a bit boring if someone just keeps on posting in it over and over for no real reason.
That said, not all the big threads have the same malaise. The upcoming gigs one is pretty informative and worth checking. Most of the others I could live without though, especially the What's On Your Mind, I'm ashamed of it (like a ginger child, as was once put to me).

Nobody reads the 'what i'm listening to now' i don't think... i tried starting a thread about 'other genres' etc which did get a great responce and i think people did have a look to see what others where listening outside of rock'n'roll... but threads like that die pretty quickly too |

It would be nice if we had a "Don't Display This Topic" option. That way it's up to the individual reader. Too bad there's probably some technical reason why that can't be added, or am I being a pessimist... Just a thought....

Dean and i were talking about this last night. I think that those threads are basically there for two reasons - to read your own comments and to up your post count. Obviously, this is a broad generalization, but there are certain members who's majority of posts come from those 'list' threads, and i maintain that just adding to a list is not participating, its mainly self-serving. I am as guilty of this stuff as anyone else, but i think a purge would help. I would even prefer new massive threads to pop up, because at least they'd be inspired.
Simon, as much as i do read the "upcoming gigs..." thread, i think it would be much better for the casual reader to check Gen. Chat and see a thread called "Sigur Ros in London This Week" than to have to page through random posts to scour if there is in fact any info about said show. Does that make sense?

Well, that's a whole other issue, that can be resolved easily by getting rid of these post counts and leaving only the little bees next to the username.
Massive threads: let's see... I'd say lock them, except the "bought any CDs recently" one. That one has a bit more discussion in it than the others. Oh, and I enjoy the "I just watched" thread too.
