Every year there's a newspaper story about one of the dictionaries, I think Merriam/ Webster, and the new words they're including in the latest edition. For a few inches of publicity they announce that they've lowered their standards and let in some new slang or computer term. "Bling" "Blog", you know what I mean. I doesn't bother me, but what I'd like to see is for certain words to be dropped and for no one to ever use them again.
Are there any words or phrases you'd like to see go away?
I've selected the following for elimination:
pet peeve the haves and the have-nots big box (as in Home Depot or WalMart) Joe Six Pack baby bump (as in US Weekly saying "Sources say Catherine Zeta Jones is wearing tight clothes to show off her baby bump.")

not the whole word, but the way people pronounce 'oxymoron', like its too seperate words. God that pisses me off. Its ox-im-er-ron. I had an english teacher who would flip when people pronounced this the standard way, and its a pet peeve (sorry jimmy) I've adopted. I'm feeling kind of tetchy right now.

I would like to permanently retire the phrase "throw [someone] under the bus," as in: How many games will it take for Terrell Owens to throw Drew Bledsoe under the bus?
It has become a cliche and I want it gone for good, as in "forever" -- never to be heard ever again for eternity. |

There was an article in yesterday's Times supplement about the demise of the 'Metrosexual'-now we have 'Ubersexuals' and 'Hetropolitans'.
I think I could actually kill a lot of journalists without feeling any remorse. ;)

Blt, I don't even pay attention to sports or sports coverage and even I've noticed that phrase used a lot.
I think, like Carl said, a lot of this comes from journalists. Entertainment journalists are the worst, and music journalists are the worst of the worst, but they all do it.
When "Dog In The Sand" came out, even Vanity Fair used the headline Back in Black.
It's all lazy writing, predictable and cliche.
How many times have you read a story about Frank Black or the Pixies, and you can tell that the writer just picked up some information on the internet and slapped it all together under a lame headline?

I think sports announcers should quit saying:
"That's an 8 point differential" "Player X is going to the bench to get a blow." |

I recently experienced an interview with a chair of a dept of social work where I was asked about my commitment to "social justice". I could do with a little less of that, whatever it is. |

I have a VHS tape full of TV specials after Chick died. Jerry West's eulogy was great. Time to watch it again. |

You want less social justice, so you vote Republican.
Ach, someone was going to say it. At least I know what the hell you're talking about, and therefore why my own joke isn't funny. Social justice is a big buzz word over here at the mo.

I see the phrase as the latest Orwellian newspeak. Funny how leftwing "justice" for party A usually involves committing an injustice against party B. |

Exactly, erebus, it's funny when they use that phrase and then you read a little further and see what they mean by it.

Somewhat off topic:
I would like to eliminate from my young daughter's vocabulary the oft-used term "bootyhead."

I've never even heard "bootyhead"- is that an Irish thing?
By the way, a friend of mine is going to be spending a year in Dublin counceling heroin addicts. I've never been there, but I have heard there's a big drug problem in Dublin. Have you been there? Is it a nice place to live? Is the dope any good there?

Dublin has got a big enough heroin problem. but the major problem at the moment is drug gangs and the cocaine ...the country is a wash with coke at the moment and the different gangs are fighting it out - typical scenario in other places obviously... but at the moment there seems to be huge turf wars going on... with people turing up shot pretty frequently at the moment... fairly steady pace of one a week there at the start of the year... the heroin trade is caught up with it... but in gereral the violence is part and parcel with the middle class coke trade.. but still significant heroin problems in most cities and towns..
pretty average dope available anywhere |

Haha, I know I was only kidding. If I meant that, I'd be insulting nearly everyone on here. The only reason I didn't myself was probably because I couldn't think of one that hadn't already been taken.
