Sure, it's an ambitious, nay, implausible question, perhaps ridiculous and certainly subjective. Let's go for it anyway.
What is the best song ever and why?
I’m the only one who can say that this light is mine

Debaser, because it's a wonderful tune that manages to be heavy yet upbeat. Okay, maybe not the best song ever. I'm just thinking of the top of my head. That question is too hard to answer!!

danjersey, you're just kidding, right?
I used to think "(Nothing But) Flowers" by the Talking Heads was the greatest song in the world. Now I think it's "My Love Is Your Love" by Whitney Houston. (The second greatest song in the world is "Influenza" by Tanya Donelly)
There, that's settled now.

Interesting answers. Here is the only possible correct answer:
"It's Tricky" by Run DMC.
I suppose Heywood's the only one who wouldn't disagree.

see, if it had to be a Beatles song, I'd have gone for Hey Jude or Things We Said Today.
Ziggy Stardust might get my vote.

Imagine that one fateful night you wrote the greatest and best song in the world, you had to, either that or a shiney demon would eat your soul. Now after that fateful night you couldn't remember the song, so, chances are, you had to just merely write a tribute, that my friends is the greatest song in the world, tribute by Tenacious D. Fuck yeah!

Maybe an easier criteria to nail down, though surely still impossible, is what characteristics would this greatest song have to have?
I'd say it would have to be innovative in that it not only approaches music from a different angle, but does so in a way that inspires countless others, directly or indirectly to interpret music similarly.
Would it have to be widely loved? This has nothing to do with quality of the music, so the inclination is to say no, but perhaps it has to do with influence and meaning to people. Surely the greatest song in the world couldn't be widely hated?
Probably my candidate would be the first music ever written. But since that's lost to time, I suppose some classical-period composers would fit the bill. Much as I love the Beatles, I'm not sure the best song ever written would've come from this century and involve only four instruments... but I guess that means I'm making complexity into the criteria. Still, compared to other music of the past 50, they're certainly up there at or near the top.
That's my babble.

it's a beatles song: how many people in the whole word have fell in love, cried, laughed, danced, sung, died, ate, fell asleep, on a beatles song? i mean, they're universal, they inspired two or three generations. and a song is not a piece of music. it has words, and you can whistle it. |

i just realized Kathryn also asked 'why'
I think that it captures the two sides of love - the ambiguity that is a reality of life, but the almost foolish, but beautiful insistance that you can beat it. "I may not always love you, but as long as there are stars above you, you'll never need to doubt it, i'll make you so sure about it. God only knows what i'd be without you. If you should ever leave me, life will still go on, believe me. The world could show nothing to me, so what good would living do me? God only knows what i'd be without you"
Plus the coda is seriously the most beautiful piece of music i've ever heard - the three voices singing the title with the drum fills and the orchestra - it tears me up almost every time.
I am SO ANGRY that the HBO show "Big Love" is using it as its theme, as i feel it dillutes the beauty of the song and turns it into a joke about polygamy.
We're not even engaged, but m'lady and i already agreed this will be our first dance at our wedding.

I just saw that video recently, I forgot Penn & Teller were in it. Good stuff. Probably anything off "Rasing Hell" would qualify.
I'd have to say after a recent evening in New York however that "Rainy Night in Soho" is going to forever hold a special meaning for me.
