a yardie is a yard glass.
it's customary in new zealand (and i assume other places) to have to drink one full with beer on your 21st birthday.
it's about 1.5 litres and you have to drink it as quickly as possible.
i actually didn't do one for my 21st, but i've seen people do it is around 45 seconds, follwed by pucking for an hour or so.

I've heard them referred to as a "yardstick" here in the US. My friends bought me a yard of Guinness for my 21st birthday (all those years ago). I quickly learned that it must drunk carefully, especially after the level of beer is down into the large bulb at the bottom. You must lift very slowly and time your sip to coincide with the wave's arrival at your face.
