I missed out on a copy a couple of weeks back when I was outbid on ebay and I was just wondering if anyone owned a copy of this little gem and if so, what's it like?
Obviously I've read up about what it contains etc but I was just wondering what the quality of the recordings was like? how do the songs on it differ from the original recordings? and what is jumping beans like (never heard it)? Should I just keep jacking up my bid or is it really not worth that much?
In other unrelated news that isn't worth its own thread, I was one of the lucky few to get my hands on tickets to see Radiohead in Blackpool on May 12th and I cant fucking wait. Also got tickets to see Paul Buchanan on the 21st of the same month and that is also going to be amazing. 2 of my favourite artist/bands in the same month, i think I might just cry. Anyone else got tickets to either of these shows/seen either Radiohead or PB before/got any opinions on either etc etc. Sorry if this thread is boring you but its more exciting than doing my essay.
All we need now is a Frank solo tour and I will literally die of excitement.

I like it. The setlist is mighty fine, but the gig itself isn't the most intense/rocking. Very relaxed. The album versions definately carry alot more punch than on this recording. I recommend buying it, if only for the bonus tracks at the end. I'd give ebay £20-25 max.

It's not bad, especially if you've already played "Teenager" a thousand times and would like to hear live versions. As far as I know, "The Black Sessions" w/ the black cover and block letters is the same show as the other CD w/ FB on the cover, but the one w/ FB on the cover also has the kitchen tapes- accoustic versions of "Jumping Beans"*, "Modern Age"*, and "Abstract Plain".

The one i've bid on includes the Kitchen Tapes. I'm not gonna reveal how much I have bid though, in case one of you tries to gazump me at the last minute. *Eyeballs others suspiciously*

Really? I think the version of Modern Age alone is worth it. I like it better than the DW version...

I've just been at Amazon.uk and there's a second hand copy going for a measly £115.
If you lose the Dance War i'll upload the gig for you, if you don't mind mp3s and no cover.
Does anyone know where the 3rd version of Modern Age came from? (Devil's Workshop and Kitchen Tapes being the first two versions I know of)

they're not stellar quality or anything, but when it came out, for me, just the idea of him hanging out with Joey and recording something (in his kitchen) made them special. know what i mean?

The kitchen tapes are really the best part of the CD, and that version of "Modern Age" is better than the DW version.
It's hard to compare the two versions of "Jumping Beans"- they're both good in their own way.

The Kitchen Tapes tracks are cool, but the gig itself was a big letdown. I consider it one of the worst Frank performances I've ever heard - you'd be better off trying to find another boot from that era if you want to hear live performances of Teenager tunes.

I saw the vinyl in Providence once for $20 and it looked so good I wanted to buy it. Providence has some great record stores- I'd love to go back for a visit.

There's a used copy in my record store if anyone's interested. It's the black cover one though (ie without the Kitchen Tapes). €11 I think.

Not sure how much it's worth. I got a vinyl copy with the Kitcchen Tapes for $30 about two or three years ago. I would say it's worth whatever it generally sells for on ebay, no more, no less. Look it up under completed listings and see.

This is the strangest, most ill-concieved release in the FB canon methinks (especially coming at the height of his powers and on 4AD, natch). Kitchen tapes are of nominal interest (fans only). |

it's a weird release. 4ad has a very weird Throwing Music Live cd too, it's called the Curse, and personally I think it's a unlistenable. Great artwork, great setlist, but nope, not a very good recording. Other liveshows from that era sound better

Gah. I lost out anyway. The bidding war got quite nasty, I ended up backing out and the other fella paid £24. Oh well.
Crackity Craig, are you sure that one has the kitchen tapes on it? There is another one floating around on amazon which specifies the inclusion of the kitchen tapes and is listed at £26.99.

Well it says The Black Sessions: Live in Paris [Extra tracks], which i guess means its got the kitchen tapes on. Plus the Catalogue Number: ANANCD7 is the same as my CD with Frank on the cover which includes the kitchen tapes. It shouldn't be a problem to send them to you in mp3 if thats all you want the cd for.

the black sessions cd is the first one i heard from FB...
...and i still love it!
i often prefer live recordings to studio ones... 'just not the same...
i think the black box edition is superb (a nice way to fight against copies) but:
i've got the edition with bonus tracks,but i tried many times to order the black box edition without succes: the cd was always defected: the back of the cd was like a kind of glue... it as supposed to be a deteroration of the last plastic layer...
did someone had the same problem?
i had one more time the problem with another cd and the cd company (sony) told me it was a chemical reaction between the plastics of the cd and of the box... ???

My copy arrived this morning.
Pretty damn cool but I'm glad I didn't pay over the odds for it.
It is a bit of a wierd recording, but the Kitchen Tapes are a cool addition.

| You're right, the black session is a wierd recording, but I like it though... I got a copy recently and I think it gives a good outline of FB live shows during Teenager of the Year period - which I could not see, unfortunately I didn't know FB songs then. |

For what I've seen and heard on stage, the eric drew feldman/Nick Vincent band sounded really wild and sometimes not very precise(sometimes a bit "porridge", just like the black sessions), then with the future catholics it switched to a more precise rock machine.
For that reason, the excellent Europe Un radio show for the pre cult of ray tour is more listenable than the black sessions and it features almost the same songs. But as it was not in a club, it's not a real show and it doesn't have the sweat and tears... |

I actually really "TheBlacksessions". I think the opener version of Two Spaces is pretty much worth any price you'd pay for it alone. It sort of builds up, and never quite explodes but always threatens to do so. I really like the version of Jaquis Tati, too, and Czar is just a killer, with Frank shouting in the middle "Chorus. BID CHORUS". And the Kitchen Tape are brilliant, with a much, much better version of Modern Age (Compared to DW), and a really neat "Abstract Plane".

i haven't heard it in a long time (another one of those cd's that disappeared along the way) but i do remember Two Spaces being excellente

indeed - the curse is very weird. the vocals are so incredibly low, it's almost impossible to hear kristin. their justification for doing it like that was that they ddin't want it to sound like a normal live cd. well they certainly achieved that.
jop, have you heard the remix of 'take' from the show - they released it as a b-side on freeloader i think - one of the limbo singles anyways. it's much better....sounds like it should sound.
