None of this is breaking news, but...
At the age of 26, Tanya Donelly put out "Star" after 4 albums w/ Throwing Muses & 1 album w/ the Breeders. Kristin Hersh was 24 the year "The Real Ramona" came out & 28 the year of "Hips & Makers". FB was 28 when he put out his first solo record & 29 for "Teenager of the Year".
Once you're in your twenties, 24 isn't some old person's age anymore, and you start to make some unpleasant comparisons.

Why make comparisons? Thatīs their time, not yours.

I'm not a musician or anything, and I'm still young- I'm just impressed by people who do things with their time, espcially when they start early.
Thinking about this, though, has made me think that I shouldn't waste so much time. I'll still waste time, but now I'll think about not wasting it.

Owen's right, of course, but it's hard not to. Especially when you're younger and thinking, "I'm going to do something amazing" and time passes and you've done nothing that has any impact on anyone. But of course, that's not true either. We all have our various impacts, and even if we don't, as long as we are enjoying our lives, does it matter?

Everyone can have an impact. Even if it's just smiling at someone who passes in the street. It could change someone's life!

Thanks for that quote, VoVat. When I was 22 a friend told me that Paul Weller had allegedly written "That's Entertainment" in 5 minutes one night when he was 21. I'm still not sure if that's true but I still recall that it bummed me out at the time. Now at almost 43, I find it laughable that I was that upset (and I was really reeeeeeeeeally upset). Now I keep hearing about people who did amazing things late in life, who in their 50s or 60s became famous or wrote wonderful novels or discovered new careers or talents, and I think to myself "Ech, I'd rather eat some chocolate and take a nap."
I got some heaven in my head

When the Foo Fighters song "There Goes My Hero" came out, I remember people saying it was about FB, but I read somewhere he said it was about his dad and people like him, people who work hard and are solid and dependable. That's nice, and he's right, but someday in the near future I'd like to do things that people enjoy and even admire (I've always been solid and dependable). I'm sure it will happen and I'm in no hurry. Someday the name jimmy will be bigger than Madonna and it's not even my name.

I actually look at it from the perspective of at what age did they start doing it for the money? LOL. J/K. (Not really.)
I agree Kathryn, some people's inspirations come early in life, and other's later in life. (Epiphanies?) It's just that, the people who "get it" earlier in life seem's more impressive because they did it without any life experience, as opposed to someone who "gets it" later in life. But I feel sorry for the ones who "get it" early in life, and then have to live the rest of their lives trying to live up to their past, (child actors, one hit wonders). |

There's David Sedaris, who spent most of his life working shitty jobs and then became successful relatively later in life (he's not that old, though, he's only around 50). That's fine, but I'd like to be successful early so I can enjoy it while I'm still young and sexy. Plus, I'd like to minimize the amount of time I spend working shitty jobs.
Another thing, it's kind of unfair that people like FB and David Byrne put out excellent records- a lot of it better than their bands' albums- but they get almost no attention, mostly because they're not young and new anymore. If some unknown 24 year-old put out "Honeycomb" or "Grown Backwards" everyone would go apeshit over them.

newO, I read the others and just finished "Golden Boy"- that was excellent; I loved almost all of it. I wish I could see more. If you ever want someone to look over your work, I do editing for my friends. My e-mail is on my profile.

Hal Ashby didn't start making films till he was 40. HAROLD AND MAUDE is better than CITIZEN KANE.

Brian Wilson was 23 when he made Pet Sounds, regardless if you like the record (I fuckin' do) that album was a great produtional achievement (a subtle wall of sound), plus the music is pretty complex. The fact that Brian worked alone as a producer (unlike the beatles) makes it even more mindbreaking

Plenty of music folks hit their artistic peak later. And then the fact that they're older is sometimes a part of WHY people like them so much. They're older and sort of "above" the twentysomethings, sometimes attracting an older, less fickle, more appreciative audience. And they're often more down to earth (or seen as such, at least) because they didn't spend their 20s in a spotlight. They were WORKING at a JOB and maybe even had a family.
Johnny Dowd was in his 60s he became a full-time musician. I don't know what he was doing in his 20s.
Robert Pollard of Guided by Voices was 36 when he not only hit his stride artistically, but also when he got noticed.
One of my very favorite musicians, Stew (of the Negro Problem, but his solo work seems to have eclipsed that), was at least in his late 30s when he started putting out records in the late 90s.
A lot country music guys didn't get going professionally until at least their 30s. |

Speaking of that former 24 year old: he is supposed to do a Q&A tonight according to his posts in the FB making noise board at 10PM pacific!

Well, it's good to know there's still hope for me, at 28! Too bad I can't sing or play any instruments.

This is the most impressive one yet. I'm 23, I can barely tie my own shoelaces, let alone write, produce and perform one of the greatest albums of all time.
