So is this a good for film or not?
Arguments For: - It's beautifully shot - The soundtrack is great - The fact that nothing much happens goes so much against the grain that its difficult for people to get their heads around - Its subtly, and really well-acted - It has Scarlett Johannsson
Arguments Against: - Nothing happens - Therefore, the film is a triumph of style and substance - It's predictable and contrived - Pretty? It's just shots of the city at night and Scarlett Johannsson looking pensive - It has Scarlett Johannsson
(Thanks to a certain forum member for certain arguments)

It's boring it does nothing it goes nowhere it says nothing and I stand by my reasoning.
Romeo and Juliet, not as good as I remember either. |

Film struck a chord with me because I saw it when I first came to Barcelona, before getting to know more people who were living here longerterm I was meeting a lot of people for spells like that, small fleeting friendships but with an undeniable connection, there seemed to be deeper resonances in everything we said no matter how goofy. I liked it, it was a gentle film.

Also, just as an indignant aside (and it is so tempting to edit your post here but I am above this)
quote: The fact that nothing much happens goes so much against the grain that its difficult for people to get their heads around
It's not against the grain at all it's a pointless arty excercise. If nothing much happened but there was reason for it, if nothing much happened and it showed something by it then fine. The trouble with this is nothing much happens because it is a non-story and should have been a non film. Also, I recollect another argument I had about films where I was arguing the point that love and romance in films was irksome because it made it all about overblown grandiose gestures and a certain forum member made their argument along the lines of, well if it weren't for that it wouldn't be much of a film would it.... which means that for a film to be compelling, by their own rationale, something has to happen or there has to be a point to it.
quote: Arguments Against: - Nothing happens - Therefore, the film is a triumph of style and substance
Stop defending it in the againsts. I said it is style over substance when someone elses argument had descended to "but it is really stylish"
Anyway. Carry on. Bitter? about what? |

I don't know. That's just a technique to discredit one another arguments It works well with those who don't like Amelie Poulain neither. |

Sorry, my mistake, I meant style over substance. And hey? Where have I stated an opinion here? I'm chairing.
I have to point out that there was a case made that Romeo & Juliet is not a great love story (points taken), but the style in the film made up for it. Does the same logic not apply to Lost In Translation? It's not even a proper love story - that they fall in love is never fully concluded - but it still manages to be held in great affection by lots of people, which seems to signify that there's something there that does resonate with people?

The main difference between Romeo and Juliet and Lost in Translation is, to my mind, that Romeo and Juliet is what it is and it makes no bones about it. The story is flawed but it doesn't pretend to be otherwise, Romeo is emo and fickle and flighty and the two young lovers are young and idealistic and a bit daft. As a stylistic excercise in this version it is pulled off very well because it is totall overblown and out there.
Lost in Translation almost pretends to be something it isn't. It's a story of two lonely people trying to make a connection, fine. But instead of doing this sublty as suggested I think it is as emotionally manipulative as any blockbuster that sells. The undefined feeling between the two leads feels false to me. The arty wandering around face-with-awe scenes don't resonate. It's trying to be something instead of just being which is why I think it's stupid. |

I'm going back to just chairing, my mind is too filled with 8-digit numbers to properly make my point, given that I'm ineloquent at the best of times. So. A poll.
You have one vote from two options, use it wisely. Lost In Translation: good film or bad film?

That feeling of isolation/boredom/whatever you get when watching it, to me, is the greatest thing about the movie. You feel like you're there.

it's good to see that she's expanding her repertoire with her next film, about being a troubled teenage girl.
lost in translation is highly overrated. i'd rather watch a Jim Jarmusch film, or a Wong Kar Wai film, or any of the other people she tried to rip off.. |

It has something to do with the troubled teenage girls' monthly budget for movies, I think.
