so i just got my first laptop. i can't figure out how to erase forward, if that's the right term. this is the first computer i've had that doesn't have both a delete button (which deletes stuff t to the left of the cursor -- and which the laptop has) and a delete button with a right-pointing arrow symbol on it (which erases stuff ahead of the cursor -- which the laptop lacks). i'd appreciate it if one of you guys could clue me in. thanks!
feeling like a real dolt over here...

Since when do computers have a right delete button? You kids and your technology... I swear.

look for a button labelled "delete" (and/or "del"?)
those who don't know how to forward delete don't deserve to use computers! (aimed at those saying they didn't know they could do that)

The delete button deletes what's before the cursor. My old computer had it, the new one does, too. I miss/want/must have the old keyboard's second delete button that deleted stuff ahead of the cursor.

well... normally there is a key above the return key which has an arrow pointing to the left and deletes stuff to the left of the cursor. and then there's the "delete" button which, on a PC keyboard, is to the right of the return key and deletes stuff to the right of the cursor. it's location can vary on laptops though... what are you using exactly?

The backspace key should go back a space and delete that character (aka left/back delete). The "Delete" key should delete the character to the right of the cursor. You may have to turn off your Num lock to use it. Depends on the laptop keyboard/layout. Good luck.

Ah, yes, macs...
Actually, the next laptop I get will probably be a Mac. The sheer lack of ability to run most programs means I'll stay productive on it. :) The iLife suite is pretty, well, sweet. Though I don't want to buy a Mac copy of Word just to run it there and legally I should be able to use my own personal copy on multiple computers so long as I don't do so simultaneously (which would be difficult).
Anyway, glad someone got you sorted.

Macs, God Bless 'em. Now I've got a new command to dazzle people with and look all fancy.

Frank says (to the question posed to him on 05/06/96 "Frank, Macintosh or PC?")
"Mac, of course."

Frank also said : "I don't think The Pixies will ever play together again as a band...A reunion gig? It doesn't seem right or something. It seems wrong, so I would say probably we won't do that. I don't know, it just doesn't seem like the thing to do." (Frank Black - Mp3.com) ... |

All we can hope is that Frank eventually saw the light and moved to Linux.
