I got Pure Guava and Chocolate & Cheese. Love'em. They have many albums. What'd be a good place to go from here?

Hmm... depends what you like about them. If you like Chocolate & Cheese then you're probably safe to move forward in time. Certainly those are my favourite albums (I didn't like Pure Guava though live without the effects the songs are good).

Anyway, you might like 12 Golden Country Greats, my personal favourite is probably The Mollusk though White Pepper is a close second, but they're more in the realm of the Beatles (White Pepper is so named because of its influences, the White Album and Sgt. Pepper's). You are lucky to be new to that stuff. Excellent.

Thanks, I was thinking about either Mollusk or the Pod. I like their two man lo-fi approach, glad to know I'm not the only one creating whacko music at home on my 8 track. They do live band stuff now mostly yes? I like the sense of humor they infuse with their stuff, as long as that's in tact I'll probably enjoy whatever they got.

Iīve only got White Pepper and though Quebec was recommended to me here a while back, currently I find it difficult to buy records that donīt have Mike Patton on them. WP is an amazingly mixed bag, there is hardcore punk thrown in with lounge jazz, flamenco, pop songs with John Lennonish lilts, airy Pink Floydiness and one warped Disney-style child-molester-on-a-carousel thing.

Newo, man, you NEED The Mollusk. It isn't perhaps so mixed a bag, but the songs are just... in fact I'm going to listen to it again... now!

I hate to hijack a thread, but I've been meaning to find out about this 'Ween' that I hear so much (or so little, actually) about. Who do they sound like? What should I buy?

?

They have many sounds. It's like being asked what FB sounds like in a way. I think Chocolate & Cheese is a good starting point, though my favourite is The Mollusk. Ween sort of have a two part story. The used to be a lot more out there with really strange vocal effects, lots of profanity, and a healthy dose of humour. Their old stuff is chock full of craziness, a little more on the rocking side. Chocolate & Cheese is sort of their dividing album between 'young' ween and old ween. You get the rockiness and a few songs that start to show their range and confidence that they don't have to hide behind these vocal effects (in my opinion). If you like sort of wild youthful exuberance and fun like "Put the cocaine on my dick" (why can't I remember if that's the actual title, I think it's not actually), old Ween is for you.

New Ween is much more varied in terms of style, a little lighter on the profanity (but still healthily fun amounts), and more likeable I think. They had a Nashville album, too, actually, though they didn't give the musicians the correct lyrics since they knew it would never fly, and then recorded the lyrics after. They have The Mollusk, a 3/4 time concept album about the sea which is terrific. White Pepper is them showing their Beatles love/influence off, and it is truly a work of art. Quebec is terrific too, but a little more somber in places as Gene just went through a divorce and alcoholism. Still, you get songs like Zoloft that are fun and spectacular.

The debate rages eternally over which Ween was better, but I think they've gotten better with age like most things in this world. Chocolate & Cheese or later in my opinion. You can't go wrong.

COF is right. Mollusk is my favorite album; Quebec is a close second!
