As a valentine's day gift to you, we've released our first ever FrankBlack.Net podcast. On it, you'll find some live goodies, rare b-sides, favourite and underrated album tracks, and definitely some exclusive and unreleased material.
FrankBlack.Net Podcast Homepage
We really want it to feel like YOUR podcast, so we'll be doing everything we can to integrate it with our community here. Expect songs from the FB.Net Salon, maybe even readings, interviews with forum members, discussion on things happening on the forum/feedback relating to the podcast, and anything else that seems like a good idea.
So, if you want to discuss the podcast, make a request, whatever, let us know what you think by emailing or posting here (whichever way you feel more comfortable) and certainly, if you have ideas we'd love to hear 'em. Obviously we hope to make each one better and better, but we'll need help.
Episode #1 Black Sessions - Freedom Rock Black Sessions - Whatever Happened to Pong
Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day - Pan American Highway The Cult of Ray - Men In Black Paul Slavens - Cactus (orig. by Pixies)
Cooking Vinyl Nadine EP - Ludwigshafen
Electric Ladyland Studios - Theme from One Step Beyond Crime & Punishment in Suburbia - Bullet Lowlands Festival 2001 - Gouge Away
Zipper - Whispering Weeds (orig. FB&C's) Derek Olson - Where Is My Mind (orig. Pixies)
Show Me Your Tears - New House of the Pope Devil's Workshop - Heloise
Fastman Raiderman - Dog Sleep We hope you enjoy it. We had a blast making this come to life. -Dean & Brian

Just for the record, i have nothing to do with the graphic. Just the nasal voice on the 'cast.

oops, I hadn't noticed this, just routinely ignore the stickies. Er, yeah, Brian & Dean, is distributing the XML file address outside of the forum ok?
(Pearl & Dean...geddit?)

I'll defer to Dean on that one...
I know at some point we had decided it was a forum-only thing, and that would encourage new people to join up. But i'll let Mr. Saskatoon decide.
And i just got that. I'm slow

Llama, depends what you mean. Giving a link to the XML file is fine as long as it is the XML file on our server. Taking that XML file and hosting it elsewhere or giving the source away, nope. The former is great, we certainly want to expose new people to Frank Black (that's the point!) and the more the merrier. The latter, though I know not what you intend, is actually called podcast hijacking. :)
So if you mean emailing a link to the 'subscribe' url, please do!

Haha, podcast hijacking :D
No, I thought I could post a link - this link - http://www.frankblack.net/podcast/feed.xml onto www.last.fm through their journal feature, and highlight it to Frank/Pixies fans and groups. It would show up as my journal entry but I'd obviously push all the credit to FB.net. In fact, if you want to write some blurb, I'll post that with the link.
I've no idea how many people it would reach, but as you say, exposure is the point. Hope that's ok.

Yeah, that's great. The main thing is that the link is to an XML file on our site. If you look at the XML file, you can take a blurb right out of there.
Here's a link on podcast hijacking, can actually be quite serious, so be careful where you put the link:
http://www.masternewmedia.org/podcasting/podcast_hijacking/podjacking_or_stealing_someone_else_podcast_20051214.htm
I'm sure Last FM is fine, though, and by all means spread it to any sites you think are reputable, it certainly helps us and Frank out, and while I don't speak for him, we surely appreciate it.
And I went and grabbed a couple tags from the XML for you:
Short: Music from Frank Black, both released and rare, spanning his entire career.
Longer: The goal of the Frank Black.Net Podcast is to provide dedicated fans and new listeners alike with some of the best works of Frank Black, whether that comes from his time with the Pixies, solo, or with the Catholics. Live, b-sides, album tracks, unreleased gems, and other goodies can all be found here, free and legal, courtesy of Frank Black, Back Porch, and FrankBlack.Net. So come and see what you've been missing.

A big thanks for the 1st podcast. A few suggestions, for what it's worth:
information is great. use facts&figures from the 'database' for some of the songs.
continue to highlight cover songs and encourage forum users to record more unique versions of the songs for possible display.
btw, <the new song>...wow, oh, wow.
[EDIT by CoF] - Just to keep that secret until more people have had a chance to listen. Thanks for the comments, we actually did use the db to get some info, but I suppose we were a little light on it. More next time. |

You guys have elevated the plain. Words cannot describe how much fun it was to listen to it. Can we expect number two later this week? That was my first podcast and I'm hooked.
p.s. As a a four year old I once knew might have said: "Canadians talk funny." |

Thanks for the kind words.
I beleive this is going to be a monthly venture, so keep your ears peeled in early March for #2. We debated doing it more frequently, but we don't want to deplete the treasure troves quite so quickly.
And may i say it again, it was even more fun to make than it is to listen to.

Anyone else think that [CENSORED] uh, the new song sounds very much like Tom Waits?

Wow, I didn't expect quite so many positive response, really happy you're liking it so far, I think our next one will be quite a bit better, expect it, as Brian says, in a couple weeks (i.e. beginning of March). Thanks for listening and the comments. And Erebus, what you talkin' aboot?! Congrats to those of you trying out podcasting for the first time (we're honoured it was us).
As for the new song, yeah, it is bloody tasty isn't it. Hearing that got me genuinely excited for Fast/Raider.
And yeah, recording with Brian was a lot of fun, I'm pretty excited to do number 2. Oops, that sounds bad...

yeah, I think it's one of the songs I call 'album'-songs you can only fully appreciated them in context of the album. But I could also be wrong, though

You guys did a great job! Best Valentine's day I've ever had. Your first podcast was cool but what's really great is that there are more to look forward to! The 'new song' is great, of course.

The ending of [new song here] sounds incredibly Catholic-like...almost like a SMYT outtake.
