Exclusive - Grandaddy split up But there will be one more album US indie rockers Grandaddy have split up, NME.COM can exclusively reveal.
Frontman Jason Lytle has confirmed the news today (January 27) -but also said there will be a farewell album from the group. 'Just Like The Fambly Cat', the outfit's fourth full-length album, will be released by V2 later this year. There will be no tour or farewell shows.
He told NME.COM: "It was inevitable. There's a path that we're on...we rode it out for as long as we could. On one hand our stubbornness has paid off, but on the other hand refusing to buy into the way things are traditionally supposed to be done has made things worse for us.
"The realistic part is it hasn't proved to be a huge money-making venture for a lot of guys in the band. We've been doing this for a long time and you have to ask yourself 'Why am I beating myself up like this?'...week after week, month after month, year after year."
He also disclosed that the end came during a fraught band meeting in December, when all grievances were aired - and the five-piece didn't want the evening to end.
He recalled: "We structured a little meeting to make it real. We got together one day in a place downtown where we wouldn't be bothered and had it out not knowing if it was gonna end. There was a lot of frustration in varying degrees, and a lot of it was built up from lack of communication.
"We had the opportunity to get it out into the open and come to terms with the fact that we gave it a pretty good go. We had witnessed the best it could be."
He added: "It's awkward right now...but it was far from throwing blows. It was kind of sad, because we knew it would be the last time we would hang out in that situation, so we dragged it out as long as we could!"
Lytle also admitted that while recording 'Just Like The Fambly Cat' he was aware that it was unlikely the record would be toured. He will now move from Grandaddy's Californian base of Modesto to Montana, where he will continue making music, though he has made no firm plans about his future yet.
For more on this story, see NME.COM later today.

It's such a shame Grandaddy didn't make much money.
I really liked them a lot.

Figures. Pixies reform, so one of my other favourite bands splits up.

sad news but like I said before Frank Black, Stephen Malkmus and Robert Pollard didn't start to suck when they became solo-artist. Let's see what Lytle comes up with

i think it was a long time in the coming. i'm happy to hear that Jason Lytle is going to continue to pursue music.
if starting a new project will give him more musical inspiration then that's a good thing.
what do you guys think of Excerpts From The Diary Of Todd Zilla ? i think it's actually better than Sumday, even though it's just an ep. it took me a little while but i'm reallly digging it. looking forward to the new album.
wish they would tour it though |

I only saw them once live so yes, it's a drag in the area but floop is right long time coming didn't want to quit after all their 3 records? Sumday was to be called The final push to the sum, and there's a message on the booklet saying 'let's hope we will go on' or something
yes, long time coming

I got to see them 6 times. I video taped them playing at a Record Store (Good Records) in Dallas after Sumday came out. I might have a couple of there shows on video...I also saw them twice on the tour with Elliott Smith. It was great. This is sad news to see Grandaddy brake up. I will always miss Elliott Smith.

Curious to see if Jason Lytle will do solo stuff and what that will sound like.

He'll probably make some intense grindcore to distance himself from Grandaddy.

and you call yourself a Grandaddy fan. i was hoping to hear what other people think of it.
it seems like more of a return to the Under A Western Freeway / Software Slump dynamics, but with more energy. i think it's got some of Jason Lytle's best singing yet. and "Florida" is possibly one of the best Grandaddy songs period.
i can't wait for the new album |

The only song I've heard is the free mp3 "Pull The Curtain". I can't seem to find the ep anyplace. I'm sure I'll score it sumday.

grandaddy is one of my all time favorite bands, and i read an interview late last year with lytle that pretty much said they were done. some good tidbits about "fambly cat" were revealed as well, however. apparently it will be super epic and fucking great. they didn't hold back and just made this huge record that only tries to please themselves.
anyway, todd zilla is indeed awesome. "at my post" has everything one could want in a grandaddy song.
does anyone have all the sumday b-sides? and if so, could you hook me up? i never got around to collecting those.

Anyone got The Windfall Varietal? It was this cd in a card sleeve with a GD sticker on the front, and a photocopied, handwritten tracklisting and words from Jason inside. They sold em on tour circa 2001-ish, I guess. Loads of rare, old and random songs, including covers of Kris Kristofferson's "Best Of All Possible Worlds", 10CC's "I'm Not In Love" on a radio show and the Beach Boys's "Fun Fun Fun", amusingly titled "Fun x3" and slowed right down.
Could probly zip it up and stick it on yousendit.com if anyone's interested.
Also have the Snow To Signal EP that came with some copies of The Sophtware Slump, there's some beauties on there.
