Note to Tiven: I am not the only one who calls you simply 'tiven'! Obviously he has more 'tiven' privileges that me, but you see, it's just one of those names that calls for it.. Word.

Note to Frank: You the best, man! Keep the tunes coming and please release the Catholics box set here in NorthAm. (one last request - please tour! There is way too much shitty music out there - you gotta set all those bastards straight. Seriously. Freedom Rock tour 2006!)

Somewhat, but not completely. You get the tone but I wouldn't call the whole album New Orleans, if that helps. There's some rock in there and, incidentally, I don't know how, but Frank's vocals are better than ever. Even since Honeycomb, it sounds like he's made big progress. Feel free to refer to it as Dog Sleep now, too, thanks.

PS Adding (tm) made me chuckle. Maybe it's a lack of sleep, though, so don't be too flattered. :)

Frank Black set to release double album
Posted by aubin on Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 12:00:02 AM (EST)

Frank Black of the Pixies has announced plans to release his next solo album as a double CD. Titled Fastman/Raiderman, the album is due out June 20 (Back Porch/EMI).

Black recorded the album with long-time producer Jon Tiven over two years and a total of 27 songs made the cut for the double album. Like his previous solo album, Honeycomb, Frank enlisted the aid of a number of notable musicians including Levon Helm from The Band, Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick, Heartbreaker drummer Steve Ferrone, the legendary Al Kooper, honky-tonk hero Marty Brown, songwriting enigma P.F. Sloan, and Simon Kirke from Bad Company and Free.

Black plans to begin supporting the album on a tour set to begin after the Pixies' upcoming European jaunt.

Frank Black Wraps Up Double Album

Mar 09, 2006

Frank Black unleashed a pile of songs on his last trip into the studio -- so many, in fact, that he needs a double album to hold them all.

The Pixies front man will drop Fastman/Raiderman June 20 from Back Porch Records. The album, which follows up his alt-country effort, Honeycomb, was produced by John Tiven. All the musicians who backed Black on his previous affair – all seasoned Nashville veterans – returned for sessions on the 27-track release.

Meanwhile, Pixies frontman Frank Black will release a brand new double album 'Fastman/Raiderman' on June 19.

Following last year's 'Honeycomb' and paired again with producer Jon Tiven, the 27-song collection was recorded over a two-year period at studios in Nashville and Los Angeles.

Tracks set for inclusion on the LP include 'Kiss My Ring', 'Dog Sleep', 'In The Time Of My Ruin', 'Highway To Lowdown', 'Sad Man's Song', 'Where The Wind Is Going', 'Fitzgerald', 'Elijah', 'Raiderman' and 'My Terrible Ways'.

Black is currently planning to put together a band to tour the songs on 'Fastman/Raiderman' and will hit the road later this year.

Frank Black Enlists Classic Rockers

March 9, 2006

When Frank Black went into the studio to record his forthcoming double-disc set, he had some good company, including members of Bad Company and Cheap Trick.

The resulting album, Fastman/Raiderman, will hit shelves June 20 and features guest appearances from Levon Helm (the Band), Simon Kirke (Bad Company), Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick), Steve Cropper, Spooner Oldham, and members of Black's old solo band, the Catholics, according to Billboard.com.

Black plans to tour in support of the new album, though dates have yet to be announced. He'll also hit the road with the Pixies for a couple of shows this summer.

Frank Black To Release Two-Disc Album In June

Thursday March 09, 2006 @ 07:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

Pixies frontman and Catholics leader Frank Black is going it alone again for the follow-up to last year's Honeycomb.

The two-CD, 27-song Fastman/Raiderman solo album will be released on June 20 by Back Porch/EMI. The tracks were recorded during a two-year period at studios in Nashville and Los Angeles with producer Jon Tiven. A handful of the songs on Fastman were intended for Honeycomb but weren't laid-back enough for that quieter, country-tinged outing.

The new album is bursting at the seams with talented contributors, including The Band's Levon Helm, Cheap Trick's Tom Petersson, Heartbreaker drummer Steve Ferrone, 61-year-old rock icon Al Kooper, honky-tonker Marty Brown, singer/songwriter P.F. Sloan and Simon Kirke from Bad Company and Free. Session musician stalwarts Steve Cropper, Reggie Young, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldman and Chester Thompson reprise their roles from Honeycomb.

"On Honeycomb I was walking on eggshells," says Black said about his larger-than-life back-up band. "These guys are still legends, but now that we'd hung around a bit, I was more at ease."

Some songs were recorded in a 24-hour musical marathon session, and one of Black's favourites is "Raiderman." The track was recorded at Tiven's house one summer night in Nashville and, if you listen closely, you can hear a choir of cicadas chirping and the producer's dog Sammy making noise right before the second verse.

Although Black didn't tour behind Honeycomb, he wants to get on the road this time around.

"Now that there's a second record with different people, I could find some alt.country guys," Black told Billboard.com about assembling a band. "A lot of the Honeycomb guys have expressed interest in going on tour, but half the time they're flying around with Neil Young!"

Black will also play several European shows with The Pixies for this summer, though no dates have been announced.

Here's the track list for Fastman/Raiderman:

Disc one:

"If Your Poison Gets You"
"Johnny Barleycorn"
"Fast Man"
"You Can't Crucify Yourself"
"Dirty Old Town"
"Wanderlust"
"Seven Days"
"Raiderman"
"The End Of The Summer"
"Dog Sleep"
"When The Paint Grows Darker Still"
"I'm Not Dead (I'm In Pittsburgh)
"Golden Shore"

Disc two:

"In The Time Of My Ruin"
"Damn To You"
"Highway To Lowdown"
"Kiss My Ring"
"My Terrible Ways"
"Fitzgerald"
"Elijah"
"It's Just Not Your Moment"
"The Real El Rey"
"Where The Wind Is Going"
"Holland Town"
"Sad Old World"
"Don't Cry That Way"
"Fare Thee Well"

Twice as Black

03/10/06

(Press Release) Following the critical success of 2005's "Honeycomb," which Rolling Stone called "a mind-blowing collection of tasty laid-back tunes," Pixies' icon Frank Black will see the release of his ambitious new double-CD, "Fastman/Raiderman," on June 20 (Back Porch/EMI).

Paired again with producer Jon Tiven, the 27-song CD was recorded over a two-year period at studios in Nashville and Los Angeles, and slams a bit harder than the laid-back "Honeycomb."

"Fastman/Raiderman" features some of the most celebrated players in music, including Levon Helm from The Band, Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick, Heartbreaker drummer Steve Ferrone, the legendary Al Kooper, honky-tonk hero Marty Brown, songwriting enigma P.F. Sloan, and Simon Kirke from Bad Company and Free, as well as "Honeycomb" "returnees" Steve Cropper, Reggie Young, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldman and Chester Thompson, to name just a few.

For Black, the recording of "Fastman/Raiderman" was a bit of a homecoming. "On 'Honeycomb' I was walking on eggshells," he admits about his renowned "back-up" band. "These guys are still legends, but now that we'd hung around a bit, I was more at ease."

Songs on "Fastman/Raiderman" include the somewhat bizarre "Kiss My Ring," the almost hallucinogenic "Dog Sleep," and the overlay of the lyrically obscure and the body-punch, visceral groove of "In the Time of My Ruin." "Highway to Lowdown," "Sad Man's Song," and "Where the Wind Is Going" were originally recorded for "Honeycomb" but didn't match that album's laid-back feel so have been in hibernation until now. "Fitzgerald" and "Elijah" look back to when Black and the Pixies were just beginning to turn rock music inside out from their home base in Boston, and "My Terrible Ways" is a true, tragic story of heroism in the devastation in Mississippi from Hurricane Katrina.

One of Black's favorites is the track "Raiderman" which was recorded one lazy summer night at Tiven's house in Nashville. It boasts an accompaniment from a chorus of cicadas chirping in the backyard and Tiven's dog Sammy, who made himself heard right before the second verse. "That provides a nice backdrop to this tale of a Polish coal miner who lost his legs to the coal train," Black says. "He ends up being a security man after he gets fired by the coal company, chasing the Raiderman away"

As Black is fond of doing, some of the new songs were recorded in a single 24-hour marathon session with musicians coming and going in three shifts and only one two-hour break for some shuteye.

"We gutted it out on sheer adrenaline," Tiven remembers. "By the end things were getting surreal and we were just going with the untamed forces of the universe. If you're halfway between waking and sleeping, you can do things with a song that might not normally seem possible."

Black plans to put together a band that can support the songs on "Fastman/Raiderman" and hit the road later this year. First, he'll join his Pixies' bandmates on a European summer tour.

Frank Black: Here Comes Your Man (Again)

Mar 09, 2006

Story by: Kory Grow

One year after releasing the stellar, and very Bob Dylan-influenced, Honeycomb, Frank Black will release a two-CD set titled Fastman/Raiderman (Back Porch-EMI) on June 20. It sounds like this album comes from the same ilk as the last one—Black paired against studio greats—but because some of these 27 songs were recorded in Los Angeles and some in Nashville over a span of two years, we’re expecting a looser affair, in a good way. For this one, the Pixie worked with Al Kooper, the Band’s Levon Helm, Cheap Trick’s Tom Petersson, Bad Company’s Simon Kirk, as well as Spooner Oldham and a few others from the Honeycomb sessions.

Although some of those songs are leftovers from that album—songs that seemed too hard-driving for a Nashville record—Black has included some more timely songs as well. On "My Terrible Ways," he ventures into Springsteen territory as he tackles the social side of helping out after Hurricane Katrina. Other confirmed song titles include: "Kiss My Ring," "Dog Sleep," "In The Time Of My Ruin," "Highway To Lowdown," "Sad Man's Song," "Where The Wind Is Going," "Fitzgerald," "Elijah" and "Raiderman." Black plans on taking these songs on the road after a European summer tour with Pixies.

Frank Black Sets Release Date

by Colin Stutz | 03.09.2006

Pixies front man and indie rock icon Frank Black has announced the release of his next solo album Fastman/Raiderman, a star-studded double-disc set to hit shelves June 20 on Back Porch/EMI.

Following the critical success of 2005’s Honeycomb, Black once again paired up with producer Jon Tiven, this time to create to create a 27-song CD over a two-year period.

The new record’s liner notes should be full indeed, featuring the likes of The Band’s Levon Helm, Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick, Heartbreaker drummer Steve Ferrone, the legendary Al Kooper, honky-tonk hero Marty Brown, enigmatic songwriter P.F. Sloan, and Simon Kirke from Bad Company and Free. Fastman/Raiderman will also include the return of former Honeycombers including Steve Cropper, Reggie Young, Buddy Miller, Spooner Oldman, and Chester Thompson.

Black plans to assemble a crew and hit the road in support of Fastman/Raiderman later this year, but not until after touring with the Pixies through Europe this summer.

I love the intro.
Also, "Down To You" is cool. I like 'em all.
The "It's Just Not Your Moment" chorus reminds me of The Beatles circa HELP!.

Isn't it fun how Les Inrocks still can't write Frank's name properly? It's like a very, very long running gag. They didn't even get the URL right.

I assume what people are listening to is the prototype 13-track version that was originally floated and not all 27-tracks. So what is the general buzz of the record? So far I've read: "FB's best since DITS" and also "FB's best since Honeycomb..."

I am definitely going to buy FMRM regardless, I have never been let down by any FB record.
As June is an eternity away, I'm just very curious to know if FMRM will be as good as I suspect and hope it will be.

I am definitely going to buy FMRM regardless, I have never been let down by any FB record.
As June is an eternity away, I'm just very curious to know if FMRM will be as good as I suspect and hope it will be.

Nope...got all 27 golden nuggets here. So do a couple others. And I'll still wind up buying multiple copies. By the way, I've noticed either here, or in the press release thread, or the deleted Sicilian thread (can't remember off top of my head) that a song called "Sad Man's Song" is mentioned. According to my source there is no song titled that...my copy was emailed with the title "Sad Old World". Any of the other guys who have it notice this? Has it already been discussed and I just missed it?
