Hey everyone,
Every now and again, I'll go through my CD collection and pick a random disc out, one that I haven't listened to in a good long while. Well, recently, I picked out "Mighty Joe Moon" by Grant Lee Buffalo, which I bought in 1994 when it was new, and was really blown away by the quality of the music. I've since picked up "Fuzzy" which came out a couple of years previous. Has anyone ever heard this band, or liked their music?

It's good to hear some of you like this band. They can write a ballad with the best of them (Dixie Drug Store, about Marie Leveau, the "Queen of New Orleans" is one of my favorite songs by them.) In my opinion, they were extremely overlooked and I don't know why they didn't become more popular.

He's a top guy is Grant. First two GLB albums were wonderful, last two less so. His solo records are pretty good though; especially like "Mobilize". Looking forward to his covers album; some good selections. |

Yeah, their first album is great. They have some excellent songs. Saw them live years back. Doesn't David Lovering appear play on one of their albums (Jubilee, I think) and isn't there a picture of him in that albums sleeve (dressed as a strongman, with a handelbar moustache), or am I dreaming?!
Grant Lee Phillips doing Wave Of Mutilation live in Seattle was posted in the Frank uploads thread. (Correction: it was'nt posted there!)
http://www.ugo.com/channels/music/features/grantlee/
GWR: At the Paris show you played The Pixies' "Wave of Mutilation" and introduced it as "one of my favorites from this afternoon." Does that mean you are inundating yourself with music on the tour bus or shutting other music out completely and just sleeping and watching TV?
GLP: Actually, we didn't have a tour bus. We were in a small van. No, that's just a favorite song to begin with. I love The Pixies and that's just one of the few songs of theirs I can play. Most are so schizophrenically put together that I couldn't begin to work them out.
GWR: Have you heard the new Bowie album, Heathen?
GLP: No, I like the cover though.
GWR: He does a version of "Cactus" from [The Pixies'] Surfa Rosa, which—
GLP: Really? Oh my goodness! I have to call David Lovering and talk to him about it. That's great. That's the thing that's always cool about Bowie. He's such a fan to begin with. He knocked on our trailer one afternoon at a music festival in a Brussels. I think he heard "Jupiter and Teardrop" from the side of the stage and thought that I was ripping him off, which I was. But as fate would have it, I was in the cafeteria tent when he was knocking at our door. I wish I would have been there. I would have made him a cup of tea or whatever he might desire. He's David Bowie for Pete's sake.

I'd love to have seen these guys, even though I've only heard a smattering of Grant Lee Buffalo but lots about him.

Hi glacial, I’m one of those obsessive GLB/GLP fans....
Check out a previous post of mine for info on Grant/Pixies connections. And also another post of mine on that covers album here 'Pixies Cover on Grant Lee Phillips new album'.
To be honest as a Grant fan, I’m not sure that a covers album is the best thing for him at this point in his career, however he is rumoured to be bringing out an album of his own stuff shortly afterwards.
Here's a Rapidshare link to a live acoustic version that GLP did of Wave of Mutilation.
Carl, that is news to me that about him playing drums on Jubilee, so obviously I rooted out said album... I can't see him credited anywhere... I though I’d unearthed the connection with Denise Siegel's (Grant's wife) band EEENIE MEENIE, (see first link above for more info)... here’s the pic, there is def a resemblance to DL ok..
So anyway I went searching for more info... DL opened for GLP a lot with his 'Scientific Phenomenalist' show, especially with the Mobilize tour... and I think guest drummed at Grants regular appearances at Largo...
Here's an article where EEENIE MEENIE are interviewed, DL talks about smoking pot alot.. and Denise refers to the time she was caught naked in shower by manager of Irish band Therapy? - http://www.nofimagazine.com/e-m-int2.htm
Some articles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lovering http://harpmagazine.com/articles/detail.cfm?article_id=2985 http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_08.30.01/music/grantlee.html http://www.grantleephillips.com/newsprint1099.html
Think that’s it for now, any fans come over to the Grant Lee Phillips forum www.grantleephillips.com !

Wow, sorry chineselover, I didn't check to see if anyone had posted any threads about GLP or GLB, for that matter. It's good that some of you guys like him so much.
Peter Walker, I agree with you -- "Jubilee" was not that great, and I'm not too familiar with "Copperopolis." I did like "Second Tune," though.

If anyone ever gets the chance to see him live, it’s been two years since a tour proper, do it! Some of Grants songs can be melancholic at times, but I guarantee you, you will never come across a more enthusiastic showman, almost hyperactive at times.. and he tells these little snippets of stories between songs, and when he does even those annoying fuckers that pay for gigs and insist on talking all the way through them, shut up and listen! |

I still have to buy Mighty Joe Moon. It is supposed to be his best record?
I loved the first GLB record and Arousing Thunder off Copperopolis is an incredible song. Both the solo records, Mobilize and Virginia Creeper are excellent.

Mighy Joe Moon is a perfect record, the other albums are excellent, but MJM is perfect. |

Actually just realised that the EEENIE MEENIE interview with DL I posted was two part.. here is the link to the first part http://www.nofimagazine.com/e-m-int1.htm
Controversial snippets from interview.
INTERVIEWER: Drummers are usually the evil people in the band, so you gotta watch him though.
DAVID LOVERING: I always thought it was bass players...that was my experience.
LATER....
DAVID LOVERING: I once had sex with a hamster
I also notice that one of the editors of that magazine and interviewer, Chris Beyond, posted the link on this fourm before (1 post)... he apparently started the Pixies Secret gig rumour... check it out

Thanks for clearing that up, chineselover! That guy does bear a resemblance to Dave!! Perhaps I'd heard that he played live with GLB, or Phillips, I don't know. That Therapy? story is interesting, she also points out they rather thoughtlessly soundchecked during his set! I remember an interview with Therapy? where frontman Andy Cairns (I think) said that they had an offer to tour with U2 but turned it down because of the way The Pixies just had 'Support Band' on their dressing room door. They don't sound like the most considerate bunch themselves.
