Don't worry about it, all sounds reasonable, sorry if I was harsh on you. So, if you would, what would you say it sounds like, give me some examples of similar stuff out there?

Last year, I was at a party talking about music... The conversation turned to Frank Black. Some girl chimed in that she didn't know much about Frank Black's music, but she believed that all of his fans were arrogant self-important a-holes. I didn't understand what she meant at the time. However, after reading this and several other threads, I'm beginning to understand what she meant. |

Well, rumour or not, I think it has enough possibility of being legit that I've posted it as a rumour in the news (contrary to which, I give it much than my new working title).

I guess Tivee would be weighing in if this was in fact a bunch of malarky so, my humble apologies if the info is genuine dyperdude.
I'm guessing that Dirty Old Town is a Pogues cover? I can DIG it. |

I have to say this is interesting news, but I am definitely on the side of those hoping it's a little more rocking than Honeycomb. It got me thinking to something that nobody seems to have mentioned yet (sorry if you have) but do people underestimate the rocking edge that Rich Gilbert brings to Franks music? I think that was a major reason why Honeycomb didn't quite grab you like a Catholics record. Anyway Franks never been one to try and please anyone but himself when it comes to making his music (one of the reasons why he's my favurite artist) so this new album will just sound whatever the fuck it wants to sound like.

that girl obviously doesn't know what the hell she's talking about, but then, that's not surprising considering she's not a Frank Black fan (ie. she's an idiot)

well I must apologize as I didnt realize this was a very early copy of the album and I wont share the songs due to that fact. I can however give anyone interested a review of the songs and I suppose its alright to give out the titles...TDivan let me know if that isnt alright

no I cant give copies sorry...Its very honeycombish but with some smooth bluesy jams in it. I like it alot but that doesnt surprise me. I like everything he does. Im waiting for the approval to release track names. I wish I could share it really I do. But I respect the man as an artist and a friend and wouldnt do It without his approval.I will say that on one song there is another man doing vocals with charles and it is a real good song. Cant wait to find out the title of the album :)!!!!
wish I could be as cool as Kim Deal

No I got the songs via email. I dont even know the title let alone have any cover art. I think REAL fans will really like it. Im sorry I even let the cat out of the bag!! I was just sooo psyched to get it and my wife isnt interesred at all so I had to let people who do care know that the man is still out there and you people should be getting psyched about a new album. I think real fans will hear that no, the new album aint the pixies and no it isnt FBTC but the man writes beautiful songs with in this albums case extremely clear vocals and layers of good music. I can take all the slamming and insults....I dont care...Im listening to the new album right now :)

well I have now listened to the whole thing all the way through....I need to take back the comparison to Honeycomb on my previous post. This album DEFINITLEY is not honeycomb2!! It Rocks harder as Tiven said. Its not the Pixies though. The song "Dog Sleep" is awesome....Horns and everything!!! real "sassy". I will post more opions when I have more time...

Ok, On some points....I didnt say the real fan thing trying to say anybody here wasnt a real fan...exactly the opposite, I said that because I know all of you are real fans and would appreciate the album whether you liked it or not because it came from the man. Secondly I apologize for dangling the carrot but as soon as I got the album I came to the sight ready to let everyone hear it and I got a very to the point letter from Tivan telling me the record company hadnt even heard it yet and asking me not to send it out early. I told him I would respect Charles' wishes and certainly wouldnt release it. For that I am sorry. I am no teenager who wanted everyone to know that I was better than them or anything like that. I love FB.net and the people on here. I will tell you the song names since I havent heard from Tivan telling me not to...They are as follows: 1. If your poison gets you 2.Johnny Barleycorn 3.Fast Man 4.You cant crucify yourself 5.Dirty Old Town 6.Wanderlust 7.Seven days 8.Raider Man 9.End of Summer 10.Dog Sleep (my favorite) 11.When the paint grows darker still (with some other familiar country singer) 12.Im not dead (Im in pittsburgh) 13.Golden Shore
I almost regret saying anything about the album its just that I was so pumped up to let people know about it that I spoke before I thought. I am sorry for that and I hope everyone on FB.net accepts my apology
wish I could be as cool as Kim Deal
Hey Man, dyperman, thanks for your posts. [figured I'd put 'em here for convenience sake]
I'm gonna go read up on Sir Jon Tiven's posts over in the "Sicilian/Nashville2" thread in FRANK BLACK MAKING NOISE. He's posted some good info, including the fact that currently, 4 songs from the Nashville3 recordings from Sept '05 are on the new record and 9 songs from Nashville2 recordings from Oct '04 will be on the new record.
That duet you like so much is Marty Brown and The Man on "Dirty Old Town".
Marty can flat out sing, Son.
Here's my guess as to your identity, dyperman: McDave
Huh, am I right, or what!
Of course, my deduction was from your username and a quote from The Man when Frank Black & The Catholics went on hiatus, you know, the one where he says you're gonna take some time off to change dypers. That one's always stuck in my head, for some reason.

some history on dyperman: Nope not Dave or even anyone thet close to charles. Just a friend. I met Charles on the early stage of the Doolittle tour as my bro was their soundman. We just kinda hit it off and since then I guess that I have been such a nuisance to him and he has been nothing but kind. I mean no matter what people say he is genuinly a nice guy and has really went out of his way to make me feel like a friend. He always answers my email and anytime I can find time to go to a show...he hooks me up. Im not saying this to brag at all I am trying to convey that he is not one of these rockstars that only think about themselves. He even went out of his way to hook me up with an awesome time at a foo fighters/weezer show. I took my 6 year old son who is a major weezer fan. My son ended up crowd surfing and being put on stage to sing the sweater song with them. This is something I will remember all my life. He has touched me personally and made me feel really special dozens of times...and for this I love him like my brother. We have very little in common personally but I feel his music is enough to bond us for a long time...This is why I say I cant leak tunes and give out emails etc.....

Hey dyperman, like I said, thanks for your posts, and don't do anything The Man wouldn't want you to do, but....any additional brief reviews or comments on the songs would be nice.

lol...He would look just fabulous in those tights..... Song Reviews: The End of the Summer=very melodic guitar driven song with soulful outlines. swooning back up female harmony. Lyrics point to a hint at new family maybe(?)"a house is made of wood,a town is made of stone, a clan is made of blood"

Dog Sleep: Dixieland style song with slide trombone. It has a wierd carousel like change in the middle.Really cool Jazz fusion almost. "Im livin on dog sleep but I could not leave(?) Im livin on horsemeat but I could not win". I could see women burlesque dancers strutting across the stage to this on. That break is really cool "little bird let me hear you sing" though very spacial. Like two songs in one
Seven Days: Beautiful guitar intro. I really like this one! then a slow driving bluesy bass line. "Have you been to Boston town, the place where I was born" "lord knows Ive been all around....on my way back home from seven years and seven days". The guitar is just stunningly simply beautiful. Not fast or especially skillful just a real nice tone
Raider Man: My fave due to the fact its just charles and his guitar.dry vocal but well produced. "All my life Ive been digging polish(?) black holes" "Raider Man got no choice about it" spanish guitar solo in middle. I could just see him doing this one on stage just him the guitar and the spotlight...
Im Not Dead Im in Pittsburgh: I have learned from cult of frank that this a reid paley song (did anyone see him open up for charles one of his early tours...cant remember which one) Very country melody "Im not dead im in Pittburgh and now I cant get out of town". "just livin aint the same as being free"
Golden Shore: This one is almost gospel."You can meet me in the morning I will drink you up like wine". "I need to find a way to heavens door""Ill see you on that distant golden shore" Man I hope to see him there!!!
When the paint Grows Darker Still: Starts with a serious bluesy bass line. "I am just a weary singer moving through this world of ills" Charles' voice again is dry and almost crackling with blues.Piano fill in the middle. "see his eyes turn to stainglass.....here I am for your judgement when the paint grows darker still"
Johnny Barleycorn: I think people know about this one too. Maybe released before(?) sounds like bruce springsteen with the tenor sax in the background. "Clear the way for Johnny Barleycorn this is the day that he will be reborn" guitar solo in middle has a nice country twang. Then Charles steps up the vocals and the band gives him a cheer....Hey! lol
Well...there are 5 more songs but I have to split I will try to finish descriptions later this evening
wish I could be as cool as Kim Deal |

I used to post frequently on this forum years ago, but it's been so long I've had to create a new account. Please understand, this isn't coming from a newbie. This is coming from a man whose first concert, ever, was the Pixies in the early nineties, in their original incarnation.
Since then, I've been an ardent fan of FB's work. I've attended---by my nearly accurate estimation---about 13 of his solo and Catholics concerts. I've always considered him my favorite, probably always will on the strength of his earlier work alone.
I must say, however, that my enthusiasm for his work has waned in recent years. Boo me if you want, hiss me if you must, but if this inside info proves accurate---and I have no reason to believe it won't---then I'm bracing myself for another let down.
I suppose I rarely post anymore because unbridled and unqualified enthusiasm seems to be the lingua franca of the board.
I didn't like Honeycomb. At all. Didn't care much for Show Me Your Tears either. I miss the rocking Frank. I was excited about Jon Tiven's initial intimations that this would be a return to form, of sorts. To judge from this little written preview, however, this will not be the case.
I understand maturity and growth, but still,I miss the days of yore. I would have never believed there'd come a day that I wouldn't very much be looking forward to a Frank Black album. And I understand that this is akin to blasphemy on this board, but there you go. Will I buy it? Sure, but it will be with the expectation---and almost certainty---of disappointment. |
