Slaughtering and grilling cattle, possiblydefinitely drinking tons of Castle lager and generally having a good time. I hate her for it, in many respects.

Is that beer any good? They have it at BevMo but it's pretty pricey. |

I haven't tried it, but it's something of a Saffa institution, along with Windhoek lager. Give it a shot, let me know.

Castle is a delicious beer. a very very nice lager. have had many a grand night drinking the stuff. tho you have to get the stuff they make in SA, or else it just tastes like fosters.

Ah, thanks benji. I've had Windhoek and I didn't care for it. Maybe it's because I kept thinking of Ren Hoek (the cartoon character) while I was drinking it. No, it's because it didn't taste good. I got it at Trader Joe's here in the states so maybe it lost something in it's voyage across the Atlantic. |

I'm back - so what did I miss?
And just to clarify matters I was not drinking any Castle lager - it was either Savannah cider or Stoney Ginger Beer.

Nicole, if you didn't eat tons and tons of braai'd meat, I'm going to be sooo disappointed, I've been living vicariously through you.

Loved the visit - spent time in Cape Town, Wilderness, Lapalala and Magoebaskloof (thankfully kept the stay in Joeys to a minimum) - generally thought things had improved quite a bit in SA. The taxis were in better nick - still driving like lunatics though, less street kids and a definite emerging black middle class. The restaurants are still serving some of the best food I've ever tasted, though the level of service has gone down. Capetonians still complaining that life is tough and such a rat race, yet still clearing off from work at 3 in the afternoon after a boozy lunch.
Just wish it had been more of a holiday though - trying to cram in seeing family and friends meant little time for me to have a holiday for myself.

From Cape Town to Magoebaskloof, you've covered some distance. Hey, Jo'burg aint that bad. The food just as good and cheaper than Cape Town (the Mother City has become pretty expensive due to the tourism boom)
The one thing everyone visiting home from abroad complain about is the driving. Motorists seem to be following the example of the kamikaze taxi drivers.

Springbok, the most awesome mixed grill you've ever seen, snoek and chips... Plus, anything tastes better on the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. That's where I guess CT has the edge of Jo'burg Wilhelm, not that I've been there...
To be honest, get yourself a braai and a Saffa and your made for a decent meal.
