I know a lot of you are Canadian here, and I'm dropping over in about a week or so to visit my parents who moved there last year.
What I ask is this: what is there to do in Toronto when you don't have much time? I've been up the CN Tower and all that stuff, but I want to do something a little more interesting (not that the CN Tower isn't interesting, that is). Any part of the city worth visiting? I have a horrible feeling I'm only going to get one, maybe two days in Toronto before I'm taken into the wilderness of the north (not too far from a place called Barrie, I think). Are there any really good record shops, for example? Or perhaps something else I should really see, go to, spend lots of money in, etc whilst there...
Any ideas?

Don't they have the biggest book store in the world there? I suppose that's not necessarily that exciting, but it would be cool to visit it.

Hah, Barrie != Wilderness (or much else) but enjoy anyway. :) Yeah, Toronto has a great music scene, you could probably catch a cool act or two whilst there, though I couldn't say where exactly the locale would be. The Horseshoe, I suppose would be one...
The downtown area is, to me, like downtown anywhere else. Yonge St. is the shopping street and otherwise, it's not bad to walk around, but not especially great. I, being Greek, like to get to Danforth, lots of cool Greek places there and great restaurants/bakeries.
But I have never done anything especially cool in TO, so I'm afraid I'm not much help. Enjoy (and I had no idea the world's largest book store was there, that is cool).

Not sure how old you are? If you want a coule of cool places for a drink - Sneeky Dees (College and Bathurst) or the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern (Queen and Spadina). Kensington Market is very relaxed area of town but you need to walk it...so hope for a good day. The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) just re-opened after an expansion and they have really cool exhibits at the moment (Queen's Park and Bloor) and last but not least there is an amazing exhibit at the Ontario Science Centre called Bodyworks. Costs $25 though.
Have fun in the Big Smoke.

Thanks for all the recommendations guys. I'll certainly look for that biggest book shop. How old is the drinking age in Canada? 21? If so, I'm approximately 4 months short.
I hear that 'Yonge street' is supposed to be the longest street in the world? Maybe I've been lied to.
Hm, Gang gun violence? In Canada? Really?

So far as I know that's true (that it's the longest St. in the world, but that's just because it extends far into the sprawl).
As for gun violence in Canada, no, we're talking about Toronto here, aren't we? (just kidding Torontonians). There's been a recent rash of them over there, really sad. People are idiots.

Bizarre. I've heard Canada has the lowest crime rate in the world too. Is this true? I assumed it might be partly due to population versus square kilometre, if that's how they work it out.
It seemed a pretty safe place last time I visited (weird thing to say, is that, now I read it again). Very friendly people too. It was funny at times, because it's almost as if people listen to your accent instead of what you're saying and you find yourself repeating things a lot. Maybe this is just out in the wilderness.

I don't know Toronto at all, but I know the biggest independent bookstore in the world is Powells (aka "the city of books"), in Portland, Oregon. It took me a whole afternoon to explore it completely. It's so big they give you a map - very similar to a road map - at the entrance so you don't get lost.

It's safe enough, Toronto is however a big city and very close to the US border so they tend to have a little more trouble than most places as most cities near borders will tend to. Except Winnipeg. I've been lucky enough never to have anything happen to me but it does happen here too. We're certainly not a utopia, much as we try to be. :)
