So most Saturdays i have breakfast w/ my parents, and my mom is a garage sale maniac. I always tease her to buy me a mandolin, or a pump organ, or a melodica, or some other odd instrument at one of these sales. Every now and then i'll tag along to look at records. This week i got a real bargain - 6 for a dollar vinyl:

The Beatles - Revolver
Where The Buffalo Roam Original Soundtrack
Muddy Waters - Hard Again
The Kinks - Low Budget
David Byrne/Brian Eno - My Life In The Bush of Ghosts
Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel [2]

The only reason i bought the Gabriel was because an old friend of mine LOVES his first four solo records and the cover is freaking awesome:

So i'm currently listening to it for the first time, and it is really great. Any other Gabriel fans here? I know where it start, but where do i stop? I really don't feel the need to own "Sledgehammer" or any of that - are all his post-SO records shit? Someone help!

Huge Gabriel fan, also of early Genesis, before The One Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned wielded his evil influence over the band.

My all-time fave is the third one, melt.

I really like the album Car which I believe is his first solo release. And I thought the Growing Up dvd was very enjoyable, anyone else see it? The version of Mercy Street on it fucking rules over the album version.

"Us" is a beautiful album from beginning to end.

I'm with kathryn re: Melt.

Great album.

Not too terribly keen on the one you picked up, though. "Mother of Violence" is a lovely song.

I like his Genesis stuff but I am not aware of his solo stuff much. Except for the Sledgehammer album and Solsbury Hill (which is one of my favourite songs ever).

Peter Gabriel's sole relevance to me is once being mentioned on Rolf's Cartoon Club for having a cool video.

"No Self Control" incites meninges to refold. It's crazy, and I love it.

I really liked him, but haven't listened in ages, ever since buying Us. I always thought he looked funny in his music videos b/c he was so unlike the typical rock star.

I recently heard this album. I decided to revive this thread.

For the most part, this record sounds exactly like Genesis. He hadn't developed yet his original style, which would soon be evident 2 years later on his 3rd solo album.

"DIY" is a really, really, really great song. I have but one minor complaint: the whispery "do it yourself" vocals during the chorus are way too loud in the mix.

I also love "Exposure". And "On the Air" is pretty cool.

Funny, the other night I was watching School Of Rock and commented on how Peter Gabriel stage dove the time I saw him. The crowd carried him so far from the stage I'm certain he was afraid for his life. I would be surprised if he ever did it again. When he finally got back, he was a mess. His shirt and suit coat were all up around his pits and his stomach was bright red from all the people grabbing at him and pinching his fat. It was an uncomfortable experience really. Probably because I, at that moment, at the ripe old age of 19, came to the realization that I had the same amount of belly fat as a forty five year old man.
