I'm listening to the new album on winamp and it sucks ass. This is a poor reflection of all the new music 2006 will offer!
Or course, maybe it is like a Frank Black album, and it takes a few listens to really enjoy. Maybe not. I'll probably never listen to it again.

I am not too taken by it either on first listen. Perhaps it will grow as you say.

i've never been a huge strokes fan. i blame the media for looking for a 'savior' band and they decided it needed to be the strokes. they are a decent band at best, even though Albert Hammond Jr. is a nice guy (we had a pint together once with Ben Kweller and some friends of mine).

I like them, though I rarely listen to them. They are certainly not a life changing band.
I am gonna check them out when they come to Manchester later this month though.

Well history has shown that if one of the members of a band is dating Drew Barrymore they are bound for failure.
I saw the singer almost get into a fight with that pudgy metal head guy that used to host for Mtv, Ian somethin or rather. He seems like he was kind of a jerk (the Strokes guy). Hard for me to get on the side of the rich Manhattan party boys. |

I didn't mind the first two albums, I don't think they're anything to go nuts over but they're not horrendous. Haven't heard anything new. |

Whatever anybody says, Is This It? is a great album. I avoided it until 2003 because of the hype, having been Last Nite'd to death the eighteen months previous. Except for 'Reptilia', their second album sounded like a collection of Is This It? b-sides, to me (although admittedly I only listened to it a few times). I think it's in a Pitchfork review of their new album at the moment, saying that they were in the right place at the right time. I think that's quite right- the music that dominated the 90s --britpop, etc-- was disappearing and there was a gap.
The new album, I'm not taken by particularly. It's interesting in places, but it's so hard to listen to it objectively. I quite like the song 'Ask Me Anything' but that's probably because it's the closest the Strokes will ever come to The Magnetic Fields.

I've not heard the new album but I thought 'Is This It' was okay, nothing special. I always thought 'Is This It' (the song) sounded slightly like 'Where Is My Mind' (just the lead guitar part).

I really liked the first album. The one song I have heard -- Juicebox doesn't do it for me. |

I think Is This It sucked and Last Nite wasn't good either. It was fun for the first couple of listens but then you realized its crappiness. I'm avoiding their new record like hell.

I don't object to the Strokes at all, although I can't imagine I will buy any of their albums anytime soon. My take is that they're still a lot better than a lot of other bands that have appropriated a sound from them (and yes, I realise that the Strokes appropriated their own sound almost wholesale from Television).
For example, I'd prefer to listen to the Strokes album than the Arctic Monkeys album. Which I have. Which I've listened to a ton. Which is pretty tedious.

Their first album is wonderful. Their second albums sounds like possible b-sides from the first album. Their third album went from vintage sound to modern rock riffs that will dumb you down.

The new album is supposedly terrible. My brother and Mark Prindle hate it. I'm not sure if I liked the Strokes in the first place. I do know that I love "Heart In A Cage" with all my soul, and there was this other song I heard from the new album that ripped off Barry Manilow. Also, "Juicebox" is the only other song I have heard from the new Strokes album. |
